(This one is going to be kind of long...Sorry 'bout that!)
Zaine continues to catalog his belongings into three piles; wet, sort-of wet, and mostly dry. Cyn watches him out of the corner of his eye for a while before getting up. "Hey," he says.
Zaine doesn't look up but stops his cataloging.
"I just wanted to say---"
"Save it." Zaine says, not harshly, but as if he's tired. "I don't know why you thought that was necessary but--"
"Can you swim now?" Cyn asks as he takes a couple steps closer to Zaine.
"What?" Zaine looks at him now. Cyn face is pretty swollen where he punched him. "I guess so....not well anyway..."
"Good." Cyn pauses. "But you're still not too happy with water right?"
Zaine stands up now. "I don't know what you thought--"
"Answer the question, would ya."
Zaine stares at him for a moment. "Yeah. I'm still not a big fan of water."
Cyn smiles. "I figured it wouldn't be that easy..." He motions to the pendant and Zaine's equipment. "Everything alright?"
"A little wet but yeah, everything's fine."
"I see." Another pause. "Alan seems to really like you."
Zaine shrugs. "I like her."
"Hey, are we cool?"
"Cool? What do you mean?"
"Yeah, you know, like fine. Not angry, maybe not friends but---"
"I'm just messing with you man." Zaine taps Cyn on the shoulder. "Yeah, we're cool."
Cyn sighs then laughs a bit. "Alexi is seriously pissed with me now."
Zaine laughs too. "So's Alan. But I don't think she's that mad at you."
"I'm gonna have to sleep with one eye open now..."
"Alexi is something else."
"You can say that again..." Cyn walks over to the window. Zaine follows him. Some birds are flying around the cliff face.
"You Cyn, I don't think you have to worry."
"About what?"
"Alexi being mad at you."
"You don't know Alexi."
"She likes you, ya know."
Cyn watches as the birds swirl around and around each other, as if they were doing some kind of dance. "I know." He said it almost as if he was sad.
"What you gettin all down about? She likes you. And I know you like her too."
"She likes me sure. But not the same way that I like her."
"Oh." Zaine folds his arms and leans against the wall. "Why don't you just tell her?"
"Yeah," he says sarcastically, "because Alexi is the most touchy-feely girl I know. That will go so well."
Zaine shrugs. "Whatever man." He walks back to the bed and starts messing with his equipment again. He starts to maintain his sword, idly sharpening it.
Cyn watches the birds fly away, then turns around and leans against the windowsill to watch Zaine. His eyes follow Zaine's hand as he runs the whetstone along the edge of the onyx blade. "That's a nice sword."
"I made it myself."
"You're a smith?"
"Yeah. That's what I was doing when you guys came to Phanaphos. I've made hundreds of swords and axes. But I also make other things, like pots and cooking utensils for people."
"That's a pretty useful skill to have."
Zaine chuckles. "Not really. My sword won't do me much good if I'm up against someone who has a weapon like Alexi's."
"No. You could still win."
"What?"
"Weapons don't matter in a fight." Cyn takes out one of his knives. "It's the skill of the warrior that determines the outcome of battle."
"You sound like Sparrow."
"Hey, I've got an idea." Cyn smiles. "You up for a little fun?"
Zaine stops sharpening and looks up at Cyn. "What'd you have in mind?"
"How's about we have a little sparing match? Just you and me. Your sword against my knives. What'd say?"
Zaine smiles. "I haven't sparred in a long time. Sounds like fun." He stands and sheaths his sword. "Let's go." |
