THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE. ---------------------------------------- I liked the scene in the Go Salon. the last 15 episodes of this series could have been condensed into 2-3 episodes. It was a massive waste of time. Looks like we'll never Hikaru or Akira take a title.

I agree, the last episodes were not as good as the rest. Still a good series overall, 8/10.

I came into this show thinking it would be the stupidest thing ever, but went out with expectations totally shattered. Surprisingly good character development, pacing, and production. The only complaint I have is the ugliness of their outfits...really, who taught those little boys how to dress? Otherwise, I thought it was very good. 75 episodes is the longest I've ever stuck with a show... Loved the Go Salon scene. ;)

I absolutely LOVED this show! I was a little wary at first though. 75 episodes is a lot for something that isn't going to have a lot of action, but I became so absorbed into it after the first 2-3 episodes that i just plowed through the whole series. I knew next to nothing about Go before this show, just that it was a game. It only took a few episodes before I was enamoured by it and I've been playing as much as I can now. The only thing that bothered me was not being able to see whole matches! There were quite a few I'd have liked to have seen from start to finish D:. Now..what I actually came here to say, lol. I thought this episode was great. It felt utterly perfect for the series. It had sadness, laughter, and in the end, hope and resolve. I didn't expect Hikaru to win against Touya, it would be much too soon for that even though Hikaru has grown and come a long way. Their match was a good one and that was plenty satisfying for me. The Go Salon scene wasn't just hilarious, but also reminded me that Hikaru and Touya are still just kids. They are deeply passionate and dedicated to Go, but it felt refreshing to see their rivalry working in something much lighter. Lastly, the fan. When I saw it in Hikaru's hand it made me feel both sad and content. Sai's torch will be carried on through Hikaru's love of the game. It was an utterly beautiful moment in his dream and was glad to see Hikaru carry that sentiment by physically buying a fan.

Don't really see why people didn't like the last episodes. I for one, loved it. The show went from amazingly fun to one of the most emotional shows ever.

I've heard of the series but I had never finished it completely before, until last Friday. The reason why I started was because 1 day before, my friend started watching it and was telling it me how he enjoyed it. My friend hasn't watched much anime compared to me but he loves it. So, the competitive side of me wanted to watch Hikaru no Go and finish it before him. Considering that neither of us actually watched Hikaru on Saturday because of other stuff, it seems I've come out in top. I just finished this series and it was great and I really enjoyed it. I think the episodes directly after Sai disappearing I'm not familiar with Go in general and I disagree with Kit because I absolutely loved this series from the very first episode, the whole underdog theme reminded me of Hajime no Ippo, despite Hajime being more better overall. At the moment, I've given this series a perfect 10/10 on MAL but I think I will re-evaluate it soon. On FTV, I'm rating this series a 9.5/10. :D I think I'll be watching the OVA and specials soon.

I actually thought this was a really good ending XD Even though it didn't get through all the manga material but that's OK :P WHEN HIKARU SAW SAI IN HIS DREAM. ALL MY FEELINGS T_T USING SAD PIANO MUSIC IS NOT FAIR I SAY! D; I LOVED how Sai gave him his fan (I was actually half-expecting Hikaru to wake up with it in his hands or something lol) and then he bought it in the Go institute! :3 So wonderful :3 Loved the ending (our first OP song! ♥) showing everyone and how they've kept moving on ... Waya improved to 2nd dan, Hikaru plays that forger guy (no doubt he crushed him on Sai's behalf XD), and seeing everyone like the Haze kids was so nice again :D Also, Touya waiting for another game with Sai ... very touching :P I'll definitely go watch the "sequel" soon, but my thoughts on this. I LOVED reliving this series in anime form XD I loved pretty much all the characters (Sai ♥ T_T) and the music was absolutely AMAZING lol XD Although the art was kind of weird sometimes, but I guess it's 2003 quality, what can ya do ;P So entertaining and fun to watch. I don't quite think it was as good as the manga though (or maybe I just read it first? XD) but I could easily give it a 9.5/10, but I'm afraid I'll have to round down to a 9/10 :P

MehChan said: I don't think they said, but I'd bet on Touya since the manga continued on past this point and its unlikely that he would defeat him in an official match before the end of the series.I am confused ;A; Who won!? touya or hikaru? .___.; The the ending Salon scene was funny :3 If you ignore that though, I don't think it really matters. Over the course of their careers they will probably have a fairly even win-loss record in matches against each other given the way their future relationship was set up. |

| Honestly this show felt like absolute garbage after they killed off sai. Felt like a giant hole had been riped in the story, and nothing felt the same. ((and honestly i almost cried) There was also no sense of development afterwords, he just kind of lingered at being "good". I could see him disappearing if he actually surpassed sai, but he can't even win against Akira. Then there was the movie/special, which was another big waste of time. It could have finished the rest of the manga where the anime left off if they knew anything about decent pacing. Also in relation to the manga nothing happened either, he didn't surpass sai, and he didn't get the "The Hand of God" (what is that anyway, why did they never explain it?) And honestly i was waiting for him to tell someone about sai, which would have made the story a little better imo. Wierdly enough this is the only Sports-type Shounen animemanga that i have ever watched that i didn't have any interest in the real game afterwards. I don't even understand the basics of the game really, i mostly watched for Hikaru's growth and sai, because he was a great character to watch. | Magnificent anime! Amazing plot, audio, visual, character, etc. This anime had everything! Easily one of my favorite anime ever. The ending was also one of the greatest anime endings I have ever seen. This is my ideal type of anime. Definitely 10/10! |

Good lord I just wanna cry. It's one of those... I don't even know why I like it so much. I mean, I know why I like it, it's just these feelings are too overwhelming and I can't explain them. Hikaru's growth is one of the best things I've ever watched. He didn't walk an easy path nor did he get magically better overnight. I admit there were some moments I wanted to grab and shake him and tell him to get real (after Sai..you know) but I can understand his feelings. Those episodes were depressing (I cried but don't tell anyone shhhh), all I can say is THANK YOU ISUMI. Hikaru and Touya's rivalry is something I'll never forget either. I thought the ending was great. Of course I wish it would go on but, honestly, it had a great conclusion. It's no longer surprising that this series actually inspired people to play the game now that I watched it all. I only learned the basic rules and solved a few tsumego and tbh I find this game terrifying. Not in a bad way, I can't help it, it scares me because I have absolutely no idea how to play it.

Yep. Definitely one of the rare shows that evoked incredibly strong emotions in me. I feel depressed as hell after finishing this. It doesn't happen often. Sai is probably now my all time favorite character in anime. Episode 49 still lingers in my mind. It had an amazing atmosphere to it. "This match... it looks poorly played. But it is rather deep."

Good anime are suppose to make you relate to the characters, and feel the characters, and the characters are suppose to be memorable. Hikaru no Go excels in this, every characters are good, even the rivals. They won't feel too much like a jerk. Damn you, you make me want to watch the whole show again! Probably one of these day! | Pretty decent ending to be honest, I still find it a bit sad we didn't really see Sai appear again as he was the carrier of this series but it was still quite lovely to experience that ending! All in all a fairly decent anime with some lovely development and in general a proper ending! I do wonder what the specials have to other but for this series alone a stable 7/10! |

I really liked the fact that Hikaru didn't won at the end. It would be very cliché. Sometimes you don't need a big awesome final to conclude a series. He will eventually win someday, since they play a lot together :-) The fact that Sai didn't say a word was so nice, he didn't even need to say anything, we all knew what he thought. Really liked this anime, the beginning was a bit slow and I didn't like Hikaru at first, but it became a lot better and I really started to appreciate it. 8/10.

I felt some type of way about this show once Sai left. I can definitely say that it did drop in score due to that fact and how they took the filler route right afterwards. But they did somehow bring it back on track and made such a satisfying ending for this anime. Unfortunately, I won't be increasing my score so my final score is an 8/10. I really enjoyed this journey with Hikaru, although he was annoying at times. I love the fact that he became really good at Go due to his efforts and that he did not rely on Sai to play all his matches for him. I loved their relationship even though I did feel that Hikaru took Sai for granted, but what can you expect from a young teen, I get it. Even so I enjoyed their interactions and both of them genuinely made me happy. The scene where Sai disappears was done beautifully. It was such a nice way to go even if he didn't get a chance to say goodbye. He was playing Go with Hikaru before he left, such a precious moment. One of my favorite anime moments to date and I'm pretty sure it will always be. I danced around this anime. I've known about it for at least 10+ years now and I've always wanted to watch it. I'm glad that I did. Definitely worth watching and learning valuable life lessons. Hikaru No Go definitely holds a special place in my heart.

It's not Sai's disappearance that ruined the show but random number of fillers and Hikaru's depression. Once we got pass those, show picked up again and kinda stopped at the most abrupt place cause this is where the show would start to shine again. The last 5 episodes were just a warm up. They made a perfect set up for future like that international championship, and just stopped... While there is a movie to cover preliminaries but what about the rest? What about the actual tournament? Hikaru growing and fighting for titles and so on? This is where it truly starts and yet show is over. Unsatisfactory. Besides why is everyone surprised that Hikaru lost? Hikaru is still a newcomer, him winning at this stage wouldn't make much sense. Hikaru still needs to grow a bit and with Touya teaching him, he will grow even faster now and this is where real showdown will happen. It is a good show that has far more to offer, too bad it just randomly finished. Makes me feel unsatisfied. But 8/10 it is from me. P.S. My heart swelled with pride when Touya defended Hikaru. About time Akira recognized him.

Nice ending to a very good anime. I agree that the show dipped in quality after Sai disappeared and then they wasted too much time on filler episodes, but overall I really enjoyed it. I love how, in the flashbacks to earlier episodes, we can visibly see an age difference in the characters, especially Akira and Hikaru! They used to look so chibi-esque! I liked that Hikaru revealed to Akira that he might someday tell him the whole story.. I'm glad that they reached a stage where they have a friendly and respectful rivarly. I really liked the character designs of Sai and Touya Akira. Sai just looked Godly and badass as f*** whenever he was serious, and Akira has such an intense face/stare on him, you can tell just from his appearance that he is someone to be feared. Sai was my favourite character. My highlight for the series has to be the Sai vs Touya Meijin match on the Internet. It was probably one of the most intense episodes I've ever seen in all of anime, even though I didn't understand anything about Go. The BGM was absolutely superb throughout the show and it seriously shined during this match. Anyway couple of things to note: Good players become Pro in their early teens and THEN they go on to dominate the Go world, yet we are leaving Hikaru just after he becomes a Pro and at a point where Hikaru's journey was just getting started. Hikaru no Go built such great characters through the episodes and reached a point where we have the Old-Young power struggle, the International power struggle and a possibly legendary rivalry between Akira-Hikaru that was just about to explode into the Go scene. Will Hikaru ever surpass Sai, will Hikaru ever play out the Hand of God, or will he pass it on to another kid in a similar fashion to Sai? We're never gonna find out what happens next. It ended too early and too abruptly. That just leaves a bitter taste in the mouth unfortunately. I don't know how much further the manga goes, but apparently its only another 40-ish chapters, so it doesn't give much hope. There's also the movie, so I'm gonna check that out too. Overall, I'd give this an 8.5/10. I really really really wish there were another 100-200 episodes continuing the story :(

A good series overall, with a good enough episode to finish it all off. The dream with Sai really got to me though, so sad. I really miss Sai. I'm still expecting him to return one day. There's room for a good squeal I think to see Hikaru and Touya continue down their road... and see Sai back again - I hope. It was a bit hard though to watch the episodes after Sai disappeared - though they lead to some good development - I still want Sai back.

Great anime, all 65 episodes (I refuse to acknowledge the existence of episodes 61-70). Shame that he never got to advance any further than bottom level pro and never got to beat Akira. All in all it was well written and the ending was satisfactory. Now to reclaim my 12GB back lol.

in the manga, does Hikaru ever tell Akira about Sai and such? i might have to read it for that man this was a really good show, i enjoyed it a lot. Sai was an amazing character, i feel so sad that he disappeared like that. Hikaru used to be pretty annoying but i really enjoy watching him now so the manga might be enjoyable. his relationship with Akira is entertaining to watch as well, especially since they meet more often now

Wonderful. I might not care at all about what the future of Hikaru looks like; his journey to get where he was at the end of those 75 episodes is perhaps much more telling. lovexLuffy said: I felt some type of way about this show once Sai left. I'm glad that I did. Definitely worth watching and learning valuable life lessons. Hikaru No Go definitely holds a special place in my heart. Yes, great comment. However, I personally enjoyed a lot from the side-stories (ex. Isumi in China was great! It added to the point that not everyone improves in the same way as others - yet an important thing is to understand yourself). I never felt like the show was going too off-track, or maybe it was, but if so, I think all tracks it took were beneficient ones, and generous in themes. Your second paragraph is on point. While Hikaru does get overly frustrated at random things, which might be annoying, he still shows immense tendencies towards learning - mainly learning that depending on Sai will not bring him satisfaction nor happiness, and more importantly, nor meaning as well - and those come support the fact that he's indeed a child. That scene was superb, we should also mention the one where Hikaru is playing Isumi and suddenly sees that while Sai is no more, he still exists inside him, inside the Go board. Tylerr said: Felt like a giant hole had been riped in the story, and nothing felt the same. ((and honestly i almost cried) To me, Sai's disappearance was what the series needed. Hikaru achieving his independence at Go and realizing, much like Isumi, that his Go supports himself, were among the nicest things to witness. Tylerr said: There was also no sense of development afterwords, he just kind of lingered at being "good". I could see him disappearing if he actually surpassed sai, but he can't even win against Akira. There was for sure a sense of development. There was proof that Shindou was improving his game, what with beating highly-ranked players and all. He doesn't linger at being "good", and the adults of the Go world have high expectations of him. He spent a while without playing after Sai disappeared, but when he finally realized it was alright for him to play by himself, he came back with more enthusiasm and force than he ever had before. Tylerr said: Also in relation to the manga nothing happened either, he didn't surpass sai, and he didn't get the "The Hand of God" (what is that anyway, why did they never explain it?) What if he doesn't surpass Sai? Don't assume the point of the show/manga was for Shindou to surpass him, especially not during the timespan of the series. That's not what those 75 episodes were for, and that's not what you should have been expecting. As for "The Move of God", it is merely an unreachable grail. It is a glory beyond the horizon that must be challenged precisely because it is unreachable. Shindou thrives towards playing a move that he can qualify as godly, in a sense. Tylerr said: And honestly i was waiting for him to tell someone about sai, which would have made the story a little better imo. I disagree with that. Sai is pretty much a supernatural entity. Do you realize how messed up the story would have become if "Shindou, first-dan pro player, learned go with the help of a ghost"? The show wanted to stay human, and that's just fine. Besides, the author probably realized that Sai was interfering with the authenticity of Hikaru's dedication towards improving, which is something that the series has valorized.

After Sai left the series lost some of its punch for a while. Not because of him leaving which was expected and necessary (although it was puzzling that he didn't seem to be at peace with this lol) but because story progression essentially took a break of around 10 episodes after that, then they rushed the fuck out of everything that could've been relatively well laid out had they used those 10 episodes wisely. Hell, they couldn't even show the entire Touya-Shindou match which was very anticlimactic, to say the least. It's not that I didn't enjoy Isumi's side story but they had to remember that it was just that: a side story. They could've developed it while also advancing the main plot at a decent pace, one way to do that was forgoing all the tiresome "Shindou shows a lot of potential" circlejerks. So cheesy and annoying. jacobpaige said: I liked the scene in the Go Salon. I didn't like the scenes in the Go salon at all, nor their arrangement to play every once in a while. That trivialized their rivalry and effectively made Touya become Shindou's sensei, fundamentally changing the nature of their relationship which wasn't that of a master-student nor a friendship but a rivalry. I did not need them to be more "friendly" with one another. I also didn't need them to have a more involved relationship than the one they already had, which was very intense already. The_Badguy said: Now to reclaim my 12GB back lol. I actually started to watch this series because I wanted to free some HDD space rather quick and this show looked like the kind of show I drop fast. My expectations were that low lol. I downloaded this series years ago but I had come to regret it because I wasn't very fond of its art and the whole premise seemed dumb upon reflection but since it was now sitting on my hdd I felt I had committed myself to watch it eventually. I'm glad I didn't just delete it, this series was a very pleasant surprise :)

What a ride, after Sai gone things been rough even some of us drop the show. I'm glad didn't do it and make it till the end. I'm also glad that Akira figure out Sai is inside of Hikaru. I'd love to see Akira's expression if Hikaru tell the truth.

Definitely a great series. The show wasn't the same after Sai left though. Easily could have gone up into the hundreds of episodes I believe.. maybe one day it will be back.

It's basically a game of securing your territories on the Go board and 'eating' the pieces of your opponents. Whoever owns the bigger territory by the end of the game wins the match. And it's over and I still don't understand a thing about Go. |

Ulquiorra said: Yea that's the complicated part, the start of the game is really important imo, it looks simple yet I am sure the experience would be able to capitalize right away if you make a mistake. The possibility with Go is endless especially when you can put the stones anywhere you want at the beginning. That's why it's so hard to master the game of Go for me and I always give up on it.I always skipped those tutorials. Yeah, I know what the goal of the game is but there are too many places you can place your stones. It's still a really fantastic game to learn about if you have a mentor close by or someone who could break down the game play by play for you. |

Damn, the series refused to reveal who won between, after all that hype. Even the mother censored for us by not wanting to know the results, shit. But I think Akira won though But I'm satisfied with the ending nonetheless. I liked the dream of Sai and Hikaru, especially when he gave him the fan without saying anything at all. Now my man Hikaru uses the fan like a true Go thug, I'm proud of him for being the strongest 1st Dan there. If only he didn't skip those matches and caused so many forfeits he would've been one step closer to Akira. Their rivalry is the best ever, I liked how Akira defended Hikaru to that old man, I thought it awesome. I guess no return of Sai until the end. I thought they'll do one of those 360s on us, by showing us his come back, but hell no. It was a Hikaru tale after all, and everything else was to build him as a character. But I accept it nonetheless, because it was done with much flare and precise compare to other shows. I also liked how they gave us an update to other characters on this finale, hell, they even included Tsutsui who looks to be in college and dating. I'm happy for all the characters, but I see Koyo is still waiting for his rematch against Sai. Overall I enjoyed it. The music was standard, the animation style although old it was pretty decent, the characters were all lovable. The development was sky high. The problem is that it was unnecessary dragged for too long, and some developments ended in disappointment. 8/10.

In the English dub, Hikaru tells Sai in the dream that he lost the match to Akira, for those who don't know who won. (I guess the sub didn't say?) I really enjoyed Sai's character. I missed his presence in the final episodes. But I still liked the final episodes. And I don't think I'd change much. That adversity and growth was important for Hikaru. And once Sai was gone, the way we all felt about the void that was left, is exactly how Hikaru felt. Only on a level much greater than our own. I'm a little disappointed that we didn't see Hikaru advance farther professionally up the dan rankings, win a title, beat Akira, or have anybody achieve the divine move, etc. There were ~30 episodes left after he became a pro for him earn a big achievement. So I figured at that pace we'd be able to see *something* big happen down the stretch. Alas, it wasn't meant to be. And it was probably best they didn't set it up so that some 14 year old kid started dominating the Go scene. I wound up liking the final episode a great deal. The two young rivals becoming (argumentative) friends was great. A relationship I'd wanted them to have from the start. Plus seeing Hikaru continue to up his game. And Akira finding a bit of closure with Sai. But maybe my favorite part of the final episode was Hikaru buying that fan. Made my heart melt with joy. Loved it. They could've just ended the episode there without the montage at the end. Is Toya sensei still waiting on that match with Sai? All in all a great show. In the 8 or 9/10 range. I had no idea what to expect coming into it. I knew of Go but had no idea how to play it (still don't really understand it lol). But this was compelling through and through. Very impressed. Idk if there's more to the manga than what the anime adapted, but I'd certainly like to see these characters continue on.

every time i finished the series when hikaru tells akira "someday i will tell you" i actually hoped he would really tell him... after sai hands over his to hikaru he buy one for himself, i believe that sai told him in that simple dream sh's worth it. and though hikaru ended up losing to akira, i loved how they made it seem that akira is the one who learned a lot more about hikaru strength. the scene in the go salon actually made it clear that hikaru and akira weren't just any rivals, that was precious to watch, as they see them self equal though hikaru lost. now, about the series; there are really small arcs as the insei and the disappearance of sai arc that really lowering down the quality, but they'r conclusion made it worth it. though the art itself really improves from ep18 and on, the animation and the background really doesn't improve much as the art and though to be small mistakes, when i watched the anime in 1080p they are really bold, but apart from it there is excellent OST here that rise the quality series together with good voices and serious art from the start. about the ending of the series not covering all the manga, i was actually read summaries of the last arc and i really think they did great justice to the manga, not that it's not interesting to see how the characters continue and love to see them, but more to the mere content of the anime - sai to achieve his goal, not the hand of god but invest in hikaru, and hikaru who chased akira, both accomplished. also by reading comments about that arc i think it's safe to watch the movie (though to be more like special) though i don't remember it well and finish with it the franchise, there's not really much to expect the last arc than what we saw at the pro exam from what i read, it's the same idea but to be tournament with pro players from the world.
