well "Zero"- Lelouche I think is alive, but the ending of the anime is very intriguing at the end of the credits you can see C.C riding off with a stranger thought to be lelouche..

I'd like to believe he isn't.

It could be that the ending is actually just flashback (possibly) suggesting that C.C. knew what Lelouche his plan was all along (something I'd prefer).

In the serioes Lelouche made some serious 'mistakes' or is at least to be held accountable for a lot of deaths and it is seems that he knew that those were going to catch up on him (for example, the masacere of japanese people in the stadium, him commanding an the Geass village to be destroyed and everyone killed, and the countless people that died during expecially the last fight).

I think that the only reason that he could mentally justify this forhimself would have been the idea that he himself would die as well, that he was only working on building the perfect world for his sister Nannaly (or however you write it), but that after all he had done he himself would never be able to be part of such a world.

It is therefore that in the end, not Lelouch but (that other dude who's name I forgot since I suck at remembering them) brown hair dude became the new 'Zero' and the 'true hero'. He got rid of the last remainder of things that stood in the way of the world becoming a good and peacefull one, Lelouch himself, and Lelouch knew that.

That's how I like to interpreted the ending.
