Is this going to be a sequel of the original series, or a reboot? If its a reboot, INSTANTLY a red flag is raised. Is there any information regarding this subject?

I agree, I want more Kino but if it's just a remake of the older episodes then there is really no point in watching it. Why remake a masterpiece?

It's certainly a sequel since there is like 18 or so non-animated light novel. I think we can safely get hyped.

Don't be so pessimistic. How can they ruin a series based around philosophical ideas?

I'm pretty hype for this. Even if it's a reboot they could still have new material. The original is a 10/10 as it is but if you show someone a random clip they aren't gonna love some stuff, mainly the wide character design.
The promo art doesn't look great but the last thing you lose is hope.

Reboot is worrisome if they decide to do the exact same stories, but I doubt they will.

I'd prefer a sequel, but I'm not sure if that is necessarily better than a reboot.

It all depends on the execution I guess..... incredible news nonetheless!

If it's 2 cours long, I'd be fine with a reboot, but if it's 1 cour long I want new stories.

I actually think that the reboot with modern animation would be a lot more insteresting (but also quite pointless). I simply dislike jumping from one visual and character impression to a completely different one in sequels/prequels.

However, while interesting, also more challenging to make, and it would be required to make the characters and atmosphere just right. I don't trust this announced staff that much.

I honestly feel like there is no way this would be a straight sequel. The original anime came out 14 years ago, so it would only be expected that this would at least remake Land of Adults (the origin episode). That being said, you've gotta remember that the original anime adaptation jumped around the first 5 or so books at will. There are now 20 books. I highly doubt they will be mostly remaking the episodes that were already adapted. This is especially apparent if you look at Kino as a non-linear story.

Then again, I don't trust these creators enough to really rule out that possibility...

Given Kino's episodic, mostly non-chronological nature, a reboot will be mostly indistinguishable from a sequel. We still get standalone, philosophically and aesthetically poignant stories of Kino's travels.

If anything, the artstyle will probably be a bit different. Maybe a bit sharper character design. Maybe watercolor style ala- Valkyria Chronicles, maybe experimental ala- Mindgame. And far be it for anyone to complain about changes to an anime we have not seen for nary a decade.

I make it a point to watch anything and everything "Kino no Tabi". If this TV show is a remake or a sequel doesn't mean squat. I WILL STILL WATCH IT. Whether or not I might dislike it is something else entirely. I personally hope it's a sequel!

Ah, I remembered when I first caught a glimpse of an episode of it as a kid. The episode where they showed how Kino met the man and he got killed for her sake while the whole town was bat shit crazy about making kids into adults. It gave me the creeps. Then as I got older this memory just came back out of nowhere and made me look for this show, only to discover it was such a great piece of work.

And now it's getting a sequel (very likely and hopefully), cant wait for it.

I really hope for a sequel

The 2003 adaptation is still amazing to this day and does not need a reboot imo.
I will still watch it if it is a reboot, though

I just want to remind you, guys, that 2003 adaptation deviate greatly from source material and often oversimplifies its ideas. Colosseum story is prime example.
Now, I'm not saying that it was necessarily something bad. Anime was it's own thing and that's fine by me.
But I would very much like to see another animated take on the first few volumes. More faithful adaptation is what I've been dreaming all these years.

If the anime had dumbed-down philosophy compared to the manga then I would definitely like a more faithful adapation as well, or at least something on the same intellectual level as the manga.

I think it is gonna be a reboot tbh, jump to a sequel directly from the anime broadcasted in 2003 does not seem pausible to me, just a thought tho

Hopefully, we all get happy with the results

Since no source clearly states that this will be a reboot, (there's a good chance that) the moderators simply put it as an alternative version, rather than a sequel, until it is clarified. It happens all the time with the returning franchises.

I highly recommend it, even if this new season just happens to be a reboot (I really don't think it will be). Even though it was animated in 2003, the art isn't stiff and unbearable, and the animation is really fluent the majority of the time. The stories they tell are always packed filled with dialougue and metaphors, so it manages to be engaging and thought provoking the further into any episode you watch. It's a series you can keep coming back to watch, even if you've seen it a thousand times, thanks to the genius of Ryuutaro Nakamura's amazing direction, and some really good sound design. It's not much of a time commitment (for the time being), and it's really worth the watch if you are into anything really creative and metaphorical, with some funny and dark scenes throughout.

Interview with Kino no Tabi's creator pretty much confirm that its a remake

''There's a new anime adaptation coming out for Kino's Journey after 14 years. How will this adaptation differ from what fans saw in the previous series, and what are you most excited about in this new anime?

SIGSAWA: First of all, the staff is totally different from the previous series. The only people who have carried over from that project are the producers. So it's not a sequel or a second season, it should be considered a completely new remake.''

Well hopefully it is more than one cour, so we can get more content than the original 17 episodes, but I also really hope that the team at Lerche will be creative and capture the esssence of Kino's Journey, instead of just glossing over it with a new shade of paint. Well I guess that settles that. I am just going to go over there and write up a list of everything that can possibly go wrong in red ink, until the new season airs.

For those who hadn't noticed:
Do you remember Sakura? The girl on the last chapter who was so similar to Kino?

Well, the voice actress for Kino in the new anime will be the voice actress for Sakura on the old series.
Nice detail.

Also, I think that a reboot is a good thing. There is no problem on liking both adaptations. We'll see.
