THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Well, this was a fun but also awkward episode with the amusement park activities.

Compared to some of the other episodes, this one felt a lot more wacky. I'm also pretty sure that Mirei woman is a sadist or something lul. However, it seems there's the usual reality distortion after the sillness.

Mirei is seriously a strange character. Seems the show is trying to make her as sexy as possible. The theme of reality is still there.

Ritsu's first line to Kotono really was like a classic pick up line. To think that the whole event was in fact a trap what cunning. The competition between Kotono and Mirei though was hillarious but did a good job of showing their differing personalities. Ritsu sure got put in the hot seat though. Kotono's speech to Mirei was a pretty strong one and paved the way for her awakening. Looks like the first real battle is going to start next episode. An interesting episode that introduced new allies and enemies while also giving them some much needed development. Kotono looks to be a strong ally for the team.

There were some weird things happening at that amusement park. Some of those boys sure do like being stepped on. That competition between those two was quite odd. The group now has a new member.

Well, that was an episode. Aria's reactions to the competition were on-point, pretty much spoke my mind lol. Also, Ritsu's line at the end is a good summation: What is going on?

And who is this random dude meeting Suzuna in the club room, why does MAL list him as a main character when we're just seeing him for the first time in episode 5 and not even properly introduced, and does literally anyone actually do that jacket-cape thing?

The character was shown in the previous episode when he was in the library and stared at the main group.

I did not understand, who was abusing whom? "Tak"-kun was abusing Kotono, who (decided to leave him for fake reality) who tried to forget him in in fake reality? And wants to go back to the abusing boyfriend?

You could tell that contest was fake because no way would that many people have voted for Kotono. Her character design is so bland that she'd be a background character in any other show.

Touch to write about the episode
I'm liking how is taking the pace, are moving away from the structure of the game to prevent the series repeating the scheme of "dungeon, history, dungeon" that was one of the fear I had with the adaptation.

The amount of detail they are putting to keep the mystery, in the next episodes we would have to see the reason why Shogo entered Mobius, what was shown in the episode could be one of the reasons. You can also see the Catharsis Effect of Mifue in action since what is shown with your mother can be a symptom that has been able to overcome your fears.

I REALLY enjoyed this episode as a sort of metaphor for teenage dating. Everything seems so romantic and nice, but once your inside it rips through you HARD. Super solid episode, and “Go Live!” My be my new favorite battle cry.

Not digging how they made a battle-centric game into a slice-of-life anime. Literally not a single musician battle yet (aside from suzuna's "talk battle") rip hopes for flashy combo battles.

And the story and event sequences are kinda fucked up too without any coherency. Those familiar with the game knows that

Oh well at least the game is fun. And Overdose looks snazzy af.

This show started off really strong, to me, with the slower, more deliberate pacing of the story, as well as the overabundance of psychological discussion, via the first episode... And, while we did get a little more of that kind of discussion, albeit very briefly, in this one, everything else in the episode came across as heavily condensed, and didn't entirely seem to flow, from one moment to the next. It wasn't the worst thing I've ever sat through, but it definitely notched this series down a few pegs, quality and expectations-wise, for me.

Finaly best girl Kotono (why so late tho?). Well it may change (I'm curretly doing dungeon from this episode xD)
Episode was weird, but ok since best girl is finally here I'll give it 5/5 :P (ok she was wearing her swimsuit so it's 10/5 <lol>).
Ritsu's personality is weird (silnet protag in game), but it's fine I guess.

I put above as a spoiler (just in case).
I also loled at Musician's Tea Party xD

Sorry for removing spoiler part, but I'm curently in Sea Paraiso dungeon so I don't want to spoil myself tooooo much. It's enough that I saw trophy icons and spoiled myself about

Someone can confirm if I'm right or wrong on that (I don't care anymore T.T)...
Note to myself to never again do that (stupid trophy icons).
But I agree that it should be battle anime from the beggining. I mean, you actually beat Musicians in the game, not talk to them xd But next episode there will be battle (probably everyone wil awaken their Catharsis Effect next episode).

I also agree that Overdose looks dope af (def. purchase when released in west), especialy Lucid look clean and fresh :D
Also Musicians rout, better (more clear) UI, new characters (on both Go-Home Club and Musicians).

Trying to copy the game here would have been the worst
The history of the game works because it is conditioned to gameplay, to capture that same story here would have been the worst and would not have the slightest sense.

Conversely, it's not making a whole lot of sense right now. There is so little continuity between episodes you could watch episodes out of order and not notice a difference.

Copying the game is lazy, but safe. No adaption has to copy the source material down to minute detail, but at the very least the game provides a simple scaffold for telling a story: i.e. people get together under a common goal, unlock their powers, and fight a common enemy in tandem to facing their own corresponding traumas. There is basic coherency with this presentation.

However, they decided to take a risk and deviate, which regrettably did not pay off. The main characters are now all over the place doing their own things, with the irony that most people probably don't even know who the main characters are. Kotono wasn't even introduced prior to this episode and suddenly they're trying to sell her as some tragic heroine main character. I suspect the majority of people who haven't played the game have no idea what the point of this anime is. Those who have likely bemoan the lack of interactions between club members helping each other through their respective trauma, which was a central theme of the source material.

What does not have continuity? But if removing this episode, all the episodes have started at the time of finishing the others.

The idea that each character follows their own path is ideal for an adaptation that only has 12 episodes, trying to make the adaptation copy the horrendous nature of the game by making the series a sucession of dungeon fights where each musician expects to be given a beating. Neither following the game's premise would have solved the problem you have with the series, it is more, having 24 episodes, we would have episodes where only two characters would be talking.

Some of the fear I had with the adaptation is how they could adapt in just 12 episodes the game, and they are doing very well. What's more, it seems even more incredible that they are going to choose to use the content of the light novel for the awakening of the Catharsis Effect in Ritsu.

Aside from Eps 1 and 2 which was telling the intro, episodes 3, 4, and recently 5 are all interchangeable. No sense of progression whatsoever. In fact, if you flip through the few comments on these forums you'd find recurrent mentions of confusing development, poor pacing and bad story structure.

I can't in good conscience say this is a good adaption. The season is essentially half over, more than half the major characters haven't been introduced yet, the members of Going Home Club have not even met each other, and not a single person's trauma has been definitively resolved. I anticipate the majority of viewers also feels nothing for these 1ep characters that appear suddenly and tell their 20 second trauma story then call it resolved like they did with Kotono, and likely will do with the rest of the characters. In fact, most people probably couldn't even tell who's a major character and who's throwaway.

Not at all, episode 3 has to be the third or it would not make sense the final part of this episode of Mifue apologizing to his mother, let's say the girl has been able to overcome her fears and will be the next one to awaken the Catharsis Effect. Izuru looking for the club in this episode after having woken up with the success of Shonen Doll in the previous one. In these details is everything, that people are stupid to not realize is another problem

People reached a level of stupidity, which left the series for a supposed message of fatphobia in the third episode (wtf) or the current one where some got annoyed because they believe that the series gave a "machist" message. People who until now do not understand what the series is going on when in episode 4 they took the trouble to explain Mobius, the musicians and the Catharsis Effect (and mention that the description of MAL explains everything in case someone had a doubt)

Come on, that within the group that we are watching the series I am the only one who played the game and for the moment the only complaints I have heard are that some episodes could have condensed better to praise some scenes with greater importance (and some moments where the animation is BAD). At the moment the adaptation is fine, this does not mean that it ends up as good because at any moment you can do something wrong, but this is something that happens to the game

Yeah, but does the typical view even know who Mifue is, or what the significance of her apologizing to her mother is? For someone who has absolutely no idea what this series is about, which I reckon is the majority of the audience, throwing a bunch of characters in without defining their role just makes people write them off as extra characters. The point is in the detail, but if the main story hasn't been defined yet who even bothers to pay attention to details.

Nayout said:

This is precisely my point. The series does such a poor job with giving its characters a role in the story that the majority of people don't know or care about these characters, so the least common denominator now becomes "some randomass girl has fatphobia". When this is a recurrent opinion, it's not people that are stupid but the presentation that sucks. You can't effectively ding people for being ignorance if you don't give them any meaningful information in the first place.

Conversely in my group, what I'm hearing is "so boring", "confusing", "i like the animation but no idea what's going on", "I might drop this soon". I defended its lack of progression for the first couple eps but I really don't have any ground to work on anymore. Even I have a hard time following what they're trying to ultimately accomplish in this 1-cour, so I can't imagine how remotely obscure it appears to them. Half way through the season already. If the plot isn't clear at this point it's time to bail.

All anime adaptions of games are trash. You're condensing a 100+ hour game into 5 hours. Why is this news again?

Two adaptions of games using separate methods of story organization, and one is almost a whole point higher in rating than the other. Hmm...

Guess protag can't 'Go Live' because he's still in doubt. I mean, that virtual puss is pretty tempting.

Weird that they actually found that chick's mother in that virtual world. Couldn't μ just have altered her data to change her instead of replacing her?

Also, the fuck was Fighter guy doing all episode? From the looks of it he failed to stop an awakened person from committing suicide? But then again, what good is jumping off a building going to do if you're all 1s and 0s.

1. You can create many theories and suppose many things for their attitude of this characters in their corresponding episode, the story does not have to repeat 5 times the same or explain to the luxury of detail what is happening (like what is happening to GGO Alternative where the information is repeating itself constantly and even people usually ask questions about these, a show that treats its viewers like idiots) the series is trying to maintain a mystery, the real problem would be that the traumas of the characters, because at the moment only images have been shown that lead to theories that give to think.

And this is not something new, it is something that is used a lot, in the game branch "indie" of Nippon Ichi Software is used quite often, in Hotaru no Nikki, A Rose in the twilight, the characters do not speak and the story has a non-explicit way to tell you what is happening, in images, notes or attitudes. And without a doubt, they have done a very good job of having the player investigate for their own account in the game, what is happening

2. Many people do not understand and still do not understand to play the story of Xenogears and it was something that also happened to the first Nier, that a lot of people do not understand what is happening can be produced by the little habit to consume producer that require a little more concrentracion than usual. We are not talking about products like those of David Kage that make you think about the poorly planned of everything (Beyonds two Souls kek) where the people who played it several times could not draw clear conclusions, we talk about a program where a person who does take care write this down

Weird that they actually found that chick's mother in that virtual world. Couldn't μ just have altered her data to change her instead of replacing her?.

The mother is simply an NPC who has been there to pretend to be her real mother, like all the NPCs in Mobius, they are there to resemble reality.

Miu is a AI, that is why she in the episodes constantly wonders why they are fighting against her when she just wants to make them happy, we are totally innocent of what is happening.

PD: Now for the anxious that can not wait for the next episodes or can not retain information, I will leave because the episode happened in the park.

Yet none of this is relevant to this series. Very few anime make this abstract storytelling work, and this is not one of them. A distinction needs to be made between something like Yojohan that can effectively tell a story with symbolism and motifs vs Caligula. And oftentimes the distinction is clear; one spends its time developing character interactions to help viewers make those important mental connections (which also functions as a marker of story progression), while the other throws random, undefined characters into the mix at random points in an episode and tops it off with good ol' fanservice.

I was scrolling through the page and was quite amused to find a review confused on why they wasted the past episodes on "side-characters". But I guess that's how they appear if you don't even define their importance to the series. Shocking.

And here we are in several problems
1. Problems that usually have with adaptations of video games, and I talk about games with gameplay or visual novels where alternative routes support the main one. The first is the attempt that a game with more than 30 hours can be good in a total of 12 episodes or even 24 if it is one that lasts a lot as is the case of Person 5.

Many adaptations suffer a main problem that is that the gameplay affects the story and its development, especially in games where the character development goes by events unrelated to the main story, as is the case of Caligula where the dungeons do not make us fully know a character, if not their events, events that happen outside the main story. As an example, I will use Steins Gate Zero, as much as possible to suffer this problem since their routes are part of the development of the main story, something that would not have saved Chaos Child from having come out with 24 episodes, we would have episodes totally unrelated to those that they want to tell us.

This leads us to another problem that is not of the series, is it the problem of the people, what is that nonsense of creating analysis or writing about episodes or even puncturing series when they still do not end? Where I work, when we make analysis of something we do after finishing what we are playing or reading, you never know if what bothers you at first is done on purpose (Like the repellent personality of Metallica in the Witch and the Hundred Knight ) and using for example, the first episode where all the criticism was in the personality of Ritsu and in her quotations of philisophers, the meme of pretentiousness, or people who complained that the quotes were without reason. No more than two episodes passed when everything started to make sense. Caligula is still developing and if all the mysteries that are in development, do not manage to have an answer, we would be facing a big problem, but at the moment everything is going well.

As for the Side Character, the character is throughout the game and serves as a comic relief and to awaken the Catharsis effect in the characters, where it takes relevance is already at the end of the game and in the ending

I'm not really seeing your point, but here's what I did pick up.

If you're trying to say that the story is still in the process of developing the "mysteries", I'd say possible, but unlikely to both happen and be received as such; <40k users with an average score of 6.44. Say that we go out on a limb and say the story improves drastically and suddenly everything makes sense through some magical process not short of a miracle. In that case, I'm not sure that many people would even care at that point. There's been so little development in the past couple of episodes, a half-cour is unlikely to salvage what a 1-cour was already struggling to do.

If you're also saying that it's the people's fault... then I disagree. It's never the viewers that are at fault, especially if it's a prevalent mentality. If producers strive for a metaphysical plot but don't want to put in the exponential effort to construct a story with similar or greater depth, then all criticism and calls of pretentiousness are warranted. Keeping in mind that the whole point of this anime was to introduce the series to viewers that would potentially like the story and buy the upcoming game, I'd say the lack of clarity has conversely turned off many potential buyers.

But seriously even for someone who's played the game the past 5 episodes were just flat out boring. There was no combat despite this being a combat-centered game. The interpersonal bonds between club members, which was such a central theme in the game, is essentially nonexistent in this adaption. I got a good kick out of people calling main characters "side characters" because they don't even bother introducing them, and I'm not even sure why they included the catharsis effects - I mean it's not like people in this adaption fight with it or anything, right?

Tickets to get in line to talk to a girl lol.

Hehe, so Ritsu is one of those types who dislikes it when someone mocks their intelligence. But LMAO! He chose the best topics to discuss with the girls!

So Kotono seems to have an issue with men being indecisive, but her realization lead to her catharsis effect. "Go Live?" Should have just gone and said "Do it Live!"

Several things happened in this episode, but it ended on a cliffhanger, so I guess this is where we can move along with the story...and we may be seeing our first Rogue vs. Musician fight. Alright then.

"Looking forward doesn't equal progress on its own. Understanding one's situation is also an important step." Basically know where you are now before taking that step forward...

It was an OK episode, all we got is the eventual addition of konoto to the guns and bouquets band,
Also when are like the rest of the band get their powers LOL, Konoto just been introduced and instantly got her power,
Let's hope the rest of the episodes be better than this one.
