So I decided to rewatch the original version, and Episode 13 of the original is this episode... So while I'm watching it I know about why everything is the way it is
It's not the Slates that is essential to people. What we need is...
Well...
A small table to share a meal... That's more than enough.

That's my conclusion. The answer I've reached as the Silver King.

I understand that everyone feel a pointless sadness but the question remain unanswered.

It still doesn't explain why do they being rude to traveler??

My guess is that:
1) It is related to the story told by the guys that people from other country hate them and throw stone to them.

2) It is because they forecast an eruption that will happen any time and act rude against traveler?

Most likely the first one.
It can't be the 2nd one since they only decided to act nice when they know about the volcano.

Yup, that's Aibou.
Trivia: He is left handed and Woodsman is designed for left hand use. He adjusted the grip and holster to allow Kino to draw it with her left hand from the back. Canon, her other persuader, was owned by Master. Both persuaders can be seen being used by their respective owners back in episode 7. This episode also chronologically comes before all other episodes that feature Woodsman, like episode 3 (A Troublesome Land).

Had a feeling that was him, just his mannerisms when he got all excited seemed the same. The trivia about the guns was neat though.

Kind fucked up when you think that chronologically, this happened before most of the stuff in the other episodes, so this traumatic shit happened really early on despite us just seeing it now.

Pretty lighthearted episode.

wut. Did you watch the episode? They all got vaporized by lava.

The first volcano episode was my absolute favorite in the original series. And I didn't think this one lived up to it. It wasn't bad but it wasn't amazing either. I think it really drove home to me this new series short comings. When compared to the previous one.

Basically it's too damn moe. The 03 series by contrast had a bare bones no bullshit approach to storytelling. Yeah sure you had Kino blushing in an apron. And you made the tour guide really cute. And sure since they were a super cute moe character. Maybe I was a little sad when Sakura died. Even though I knew it was coming. But it couldn't hold a candle to the impact of the original episode. Because it was so calculated and trying to make you sad. The original no frills story where we watch a grounded young girl unwittingly give up her life. Is a far sadder experience.

I also gotta say. This new series has had really consistent animation. And it's looked very nice. But I didn't even think the eruption looked as cool as the 03 series. Well they're doing another very familiar story next time. Lets see how they fare with it.

What a heartbreaking episode. Kino's 3-day stay in that country reminds me of Three Days of Happiness. It really is a Three Days of Happiness though (in one way or another).

I'm still thinking back to Kino's self-deprecation over being thankful that Sakura didn't come along. In both the 2003 adaptation and the light novel, it was Hermes that stated that, but here, Kino was the one who mentions it, along with the added line of calling herself egotistical. The differences here are so ridiculously subtle, but the changes here places a lot more grief and self-admonishment on Kino's part, which makes contextual sense with the mention of ego. It's used to describe the situation at hand, the country's actions, and Kino's self-reflective thoughts.

I...I think that's actually more effective. That was actually just short of brilliant.

Did Kino mean she was happy that Sakura chose not to follow her before Kino saw the town destroyed? I'm hoping that's what she meant, and that she was devastated she wanted her to stay, now realizing what that meant for Sakura.

I thought there was disagreement with Kino's "ego" comment between this and the 2003 series, but it turns out it was just poorly executed. In the 2003 series, she says "Ego da yo. Kore wa ego da." after reading the letter, suggesting that it was the ego of the country's people. In this series, she says that after telling Hermes that she's relieved Sakura didn't tag along, which suggests that it's Kino's ego. Except, as NostalgiaWitch on Reddit explains, they both refer to the mother's ego and it's not Kino who's relieved, it's Sakura's mother. The whole part about being lucky that they didn't coax Kino is supposed to be what Kino thinks the mother's hidden thoughts are.

I wasn't expect that tragedy at the end. Damn feels.

They are foolish indeed. They could just really evacuated and find someplace else. No one wants them? Build another country for them. Such a waste of kind people. Thought they were bad before. Sakura's letter hit the most in the kokoro.

Really heartbreaking.

I was wondering why the guards were relieved when Kino stated they were only going to stay for 3 days... For a moment I thought it was going to be a town that had some kind of effect on people, making them never want to leave but it went full-blown tragedy instead. Now I'm sad. And frustrated. Their situation wasn't hopeless so I'm upset the townspeople gave up before they even tried. They found a place to call home once before, they could've done it again. It was nice to see Kino's neutrality mask break though but Hermes seemed a little... heartless.

RIP townspeople, Sakura and Master's Apprentice.

When it comes to anime, I think of myself as a compassionate person, yet this show manages that I don't give a damn. It was too predictable that something bad will happen, because it always turns out to be different than expected, and the execution was hamfisted, let alone the fact that it didn't really make any sense. Also, Hermes is still annoying as ever.

I don't usually drop shows this far in, but for Kino no Tabi I'll make an exeption.

Initially, mee too wondered why they were so relieved. By now in the tenth episode we have learned that in the end there is always a moral to be grasped, so I was ready to catch any important detail. But when Kino was leaving the country I still could not figure out what the moral was, it just seemed like a nice country. Like you I hypothesized that after the 3 days in the country, something bad would happen to Kino. I had also thought that they had somehow poisoned she and that poison only will took effect after 3 days. But in the end it is practically them to explain the morals, in the letter. And it is true that they could well saved themselves, but perhaps it was the only way to transpose this morality to an entire country

Hmm considering how the colosseum episode went I was worried they'd bungle this one too. But, that was actually pretty good. It still lacks the realism and world building of the original, but it still told the story well.

I knew they wouldn't be able to resist adding this one. I prefer how they portray the town's sense of homeliness in this version more. Sakura was infinitely cuter, which didn't make watching the build up any easier. I will say I'm a bit disappointed in how they handled the eruption though. The older version executed that entire sequence far more dramatically, particularly showing how visibly shocked Kino was. In this one, any semblance of grief Kino had seemed more internalized.

I can already see where the next episode is heading. Personally, I'd rather this season have just focused on new travels and leave the classic moments from 2003 be (though for newcomers, it's understandable).

I think the older version's art style definitely made the difference. It was dull & bleak which was perfect for these uglier moments in the journey. I can't even fathom "A Peaceful Land" from the 2003 version having any impact if it was shiny & cute.

This episode made me feel bad for all those people who live on in bad conditions wherever they are, refusing to leave that place because that is all they have known in their life. It's their home.

I was enjoying the whole episode and something kept nagging me like I've been here before. It was only when Kino is leaving the city I realize that the previous adaptation also did this episode and how it ended, and I was like 'OH God, no'

It was gut-wrenching.
"...our faces marked by toil, by deceptions, by success, by love; our weary eyes looking still, looking always, looking anxiously for something out of life, that while it is expected is already gone – has passed unseen, in a sigh, in a flash – together with the youth, with the strength, with the romance of illusions.” - Joseph Conrad ('Youth')

I was waiting for the catch why everyone is so kind and it turns out they're just doomed and don't want to save themselves. I didn't get why they didn't try to evacuate anyway, it's not like it was instant disaster you can't prepare against...they had one month's warning and that was plenty enough time to move everyone including their valuables out of the danger zone or several kilometers away from the volcano and start over. Heck even the kid knows. >_<

This was an interesting story because it shows how Kino acquired the woodman. She is fortunate to have gotten it under such tight and close circumstances. This easily one of the best episodes of the animated series.

Pretty weak tea compared to the 2003 version of this same story. I think I preferred the 2003 version of the coliseum story but it's quite defensible that this series did a shorter adaptation of that, but in the case of this story both series use one episode so it's easier to compare them directly. The 2003 version is much more subtle and clever and successfully hinges on Sakura as Kino's main connection to the town. She gets too little screentime here for that and the rapid friendship between them isn't established, nor is the deliberate parallel between Sakura and Kino's younger self played on; it can't do this because the episode with Kino's backstory has yet to be shown in this series but that just seems like an argument for showing that one earlier as the 2003 series did. Without that parallel Sakura's parents asking her if she wants to go on a journey like Kino comes out of nowhere; there's also very little sense they're trying to offer her an escape from the volcano.

This episode was boring and the twist didn't work cuz I don't care about that country in the first place.

And what is that logic of people willingly accept to kill themselves with their children?

Fuck, now it makes sense the old man who fixes the gun for Kino was the guy who traveled with her master, it's amazing that the characters are more radiant than in the 2003 version.
I think the moral is that people only improve their attitudes when they are close to death.
This episode was much more emotional than the 2003 version, because we had more sympathy with the characters, they were more vivid, it was easier to sympathize with people.
Very amazing guy, this version is almost completely superior to the old one.

PT-BR

Of all the episodes they had to re-adapt...it's very impactful but I still fully disagree with their decision. This wasn't a "There's 48 hours max", they had a whole month. In a whole month you could have moved the people, setup important resources, found a new temporary place, started building new housing, literally anything. And selfishly taking all the kids with them makes even less sense. "We decided instead to fix our reputation with travelers." Know what could have helped? Making a mural on the road into town explaining it and informing of the new settlement where they're changing their ways. Put the story in that letter onto the mural and voila. And the whole "Our people have always been here" well now they can be a single valley over and look you've no longer doomed your history, culture, or children to oblivion.

I know every country Kino visits has some version of its own distopian flaws but with the time given it just makes no sense.
