Melancholic Tone and Feeling of Family
I think this chapter was really beautiful and melancholic. Despite how messy, chaotic, and bleak everything looks, there was a sense of warmth or unity throughout. Starting with the hospital, Tokimasa- a guy that has been along with Yamashiro as long as we know and has shown his loyal and friendly relationship with him through the entire series running into the room to check on his friend and boss who had a heart attack. Mako’s smiles are typically a frightening thing, a mask sorts, but the one that he gave Tokimasa before going out for a smoke felt comforting to me; that is, only as a form of avoidance in regards to answering the question about Burst’s fate. Without context, seeing a young looking Mako is ambiguous but still captures the essence of sentimentality. There is a sense of sadness in him expressing that everything's falling apart, alone on the rooftop, reflecting on his past. Be it if this was his goal or not.

It was after this which brought a tear, or many tears to my eye. Mako calling Seki with all of the bad news and ending by asking him, whether or not he betrayed them, 'if you could at least save Tatsuhiko'. I feel this abusive relationship with Mako, he has always been an anchor and I want to trust that he earnestly cares for Tatsuhiko, and this is by no means proof that he won't throw him out one day, but it still warmed my heart a lot, it practically burned it. As does Mako simply reaching out for help, and Seki appearing to comply, for him and Tatsuhiko reached new heights in Yokohama and had quite the sad farewell.

I have spoken in detail about how real Burst feels, in the people that you see from the very beginning which don't have a large narrative role but create a sense of family, or the unique interactions they have with each other, or in the way that everyone around Burst starts to warm up to Tatsuhiko in their own ways until it's clear that they really appreciate him. Having everybody come together at a time as dire as this felt like it perfectly captured that, the sense of family that Burst created; melancholic as its best shown through the bleakness. It was really sweet, a reminder that I love these freaks, every single one.

Miscellaneous Points
There were two other points I wanted to make. One was just to address the fact that Taki being idolized by his people while also mistreating them is a theme. Here with Moriken, and prior with Arisa mentioning it directly: “Is this how you treat the subordinates that admire you?!” That along with Mako’s discussion on the ‘real Taki’ being prideful in not showing weakness, cunning and secretive, maybe a little bit cowardly- and the rumor of him being a violent despot, it all makes me pretty freaking curious about him.

The other point is that there may be a parallel in Amano dropping Yamashiro because of business and Yamashiro dropping Seki because of business. In both cases it was a boss-subordinate relationship, one that was founded on a personal bond- or we can at least assume with Yamashiro and Amano. Perhaps it's a statement of losing sight of your friends and your faith in them the deeper you get.

Mako's past
Edit: I ended up discussing the brief glimpse into Mako's past with my friend and some interesting notions came up. Who's dream was he told? Well, the easiest answer is Yamashiro's. We can imagine it was a dream revolving around creating Burst, and the next pages "it's all falling apart..." would go to suggest Mako feels some regret. He had just left the bosses hospitalized side and by his actions, helped leave Yamashiro and Burst in ruin. We can imagine he started to go against Yamashiro at some point and isn't exactly proud of himself for betraying them. Easy enough answer right? It even fits the melancholic tone I love!

But, I have to think that isn't the case. For one, the face telling Mako the dream is kept off screen to create an aspect of mystery and make us guess who it is. For two, Yamashiro had a beard in his youth, that chin is clean shaven! Both of these would go to suggest it isn't Yamashiro, and we know Shinjuku Swan is a series which loves its twists so it may be something far more shocking or complicated. Either way it is hard to escape from the interpretation of a dream for Burst due to the language Mako uses. But, I do want to put out there that Mako is also working with Minerva's boss so my mind wondered if it was him too.
