John's Random One-Shot Review #6 (02/20/25)

Summary:

A 5-page short story one-shot... 4 pages if you don't count the 1-image cover page. A boy is seemingly the only student in middle school that sees a tall girl as more than her tall height.

Review:

  • Well... I like the first panel lol. The cover.
  • This is a 5-page short story; 4 not counting the cover page.
  • I didn't even know published one-shots could be this short.
  • I mean, the art is fine. Actually, leaps and bounds better than any of the unsettling sharp 'shoujo' or 'josei' artworks. The characters look very clean and not 'uncanny valley'. Yes, all the art is quite appealing. No complaints. And uhhh. I mean what else.
  • Admittedly kinda dumb that a simple passing remark from the boy is enough to make the girl weep tears of joy. I understand the message -- that there is much more to a person than their height, and that the girl must be deeply bothered that it's all people recognize her for. But I think for her *tears* to be justified, the story requires more pages and more fleshing out. I won't say the 'plot/story' was bad -- it's just that, 5 pages doesn't really qualify as a story...
  • Actually, I take that back. If literature class taught me anything, it is that anyone can defy the arbitrary conventions of traditional storytelling. This 'story' technically has an exposition, a conflict, and a climax, and a resolution. A 'cramming act' that is impressive in its own right. I guess all I'm saying is - it's difficult to attribute a score to something so short.
It’s time to ditch the text file.
