animejas said:I like both shows but Kill la Kill is fucking amazing, and Gurren Lagann is very good overall.
I feel like Gurren Lagann has higher peaks in terms of hype with its action, direction and animation, and the underdog story and characterization was very good overall, but the plot in the 2nd half was really tiresome for me at one point. I got what they were going for, but it lost a lot of steam for me, and only was saved by the action at the end. I know a lot of people really loved the more deeper, political showcase for Gurren Lagann to show the contrast of people before having the privileges of a well constructed society vs after, but man it just never failed to grab me in that way. Generally the action and visuals saved this show from being an average or fine show at best. I only really cared for Simon and Viral in the show and sort of for Kamina too. Also the music kicked ass as well so I have to give credit there.
But with Kill la Kill, while it had a much tighter budget (since brand new studio), it managed to captivate me a lot more than Gurren Lagann did. Gurren has a larger scope, its more of an epic per say from a mecha to a political bonanza, but Kill la Kill took concepts that I never expected (or expected to be good) and turn it into a fiasco of pure awesomeness. Imaishi and staff were on something when they wanted to animate a show where clothing was dominating the stature of the world, with a high school being ruled under a dictatorship with clothing dominating all too, with the absurdity of using fanservice as a proper plot point and making a genuinely entertaining and fascinating story behind such ludicrous concepts while managing to mix in the fun cliches to create a chaotic ass experience that's always got my blood pumping. Some twists were genuinely terrific too, which I don't say too often when it comes to twists since its so easy to mess up.
Plus, with having Ryuko and Satsuki (2 of my top 10 favorite female characters), a great side cast in Mako and the Elite 4, the absolute godtier hype of the Sawano soundtracks for everyone and all situations, the absurd yet insane directing for a very strict budget and much more, Kill la Kill just left more impact on me, was more creative, more entertaining, had a better dub (which I saw both in), more bloodpumping soundtracks, and ultimately is more rewatchable and more memorable for me. A ton of people prefer Gurren Lagann which is really cool with me, but for me, Kill la Kill is truly one of my favorite anime out there.
