The official website of the Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun (Toilet-bound Hanako-kun) television anime announced on Thursday that the anime series will "restart," revealing a teaser visual (pictured) and announcement promo. Voice actresses Megumi Ogata and Akari Kitou are reprising their roles as Hanako-kun and Nene Yashiro, respectively.

Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun adapts Iro Aida's supernatural comedy manga, which began in GFantasy in June 2014. Square Enix released the 18th volume on August 26. The manga has a cumulative 8 million copies of its volumes in print.

Yen Press licensed the manga in English in July 2017 and published the 16th volume on October 4. The 17th volume is planned for a February 21 release. Square Enix also digitally publishes the manga in English through Manga UP!

Synopsis
Rumors of the supernatural overrun Kamome Academy, namely the "Seven Mysteries." One of these mysteries is the legend of Hanako-san, the ghost of a young girl residing in the girl's bathroom on the third floor of the old school building, who is said to grant any wish her summoner desires. First-year high school student Nene Yashiro daringly summons Hanako-san in desperate need of love, but the Hanako that appears before her is a boy!

After Hanako-kun claims that he has no magical items of use, Nene tries various ways to get noticed by her crush. With her desperation reaching its peak, she gets into trouble after consuming a mermaid scale, which turns her into a fish. Hanako-kun rescues her, binding their fates together in the process; in return for this aid, Nene must become his assistant. Now entangled in the supernatural realm, Nene soon discovers that there's much more to the school's Seven Mysteries than basic rumors. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

Possibly a reboot? I was really ??? because a reboot is a very low-medium chance to happen but then I remembered the 1st season of this series did leave out some major plot points but the animation is fine as it should be.

So excited for the prospect of Hanako-kun anything, but my heart already sank a little seeing the simplified art/colouring style that the series is known for.

Hope it's not a reboot and it's just a catchy name for season 2. Rebooting a 2020 anime is just beyond ridiculous

a reboot would be a very odd choice, considering the original came out just a few years ago..? can't say i'd mind it, though. hopefully adapting stuff they left out + season two ~!

I wonder what "new project" means in this instance, I wonder if they're like going to make a movie or something, a reboot doesn't seem likely. Really cool announcement nonetheless.

I'm assuming that this is going to be a reboot, and I'm really excited for it! While the original adaptation is really good already, there are aspects that could be improved, not to mention some arcs that were skipped and/or switched around. This means that we're getting more of the story, and if the new anime is successful, we will probably get a season two. So yay! Can't wait to see everyone again.
Looking forward to animation improvements, the teaser visual is already looking more detailed (the eyes-)

Edit: there's a clock on the top left corner of the official site, so I'm guessing we're at least getting the Clockkeepers arc

I'll take a remake if it means adapting the Clock Keepers arc and Young Exorcist chapters. Let's hope that also means season 2 in the future.

I was not expecting this I’m so excited!! A restart is probably the best choice considering an important part was skipped in the previous adaptation

Seems a few people are just as confused as I am. Is there anyone here who can read Japanese who knows what the word used in the official announcement means? Lol
Since "restart" CAN be a synonym for "resume", I'm gonna hope that this is a continuation rather than a readaptation because I thought the first Hanako-kun anime ended on a very "just read the manga" note, and I was really hoping there'd be a sequel to amend that

Surely it's too early to reboot the anime? Did the manga recently finish, or something, and they're giving it the FMAB treatment? XD

I didn't expected this at all. I really love the manga, and I hope this won't ruin this project forever.

Okay, I can see from the comments why a "restart" would make sense, but I'm still questioning if it even needs to happen. Couldn't they have just squeezed the stuff into a second season or make some OVAs to cover what was skipped instead? Is this the same animation company? Why would you dedicate so much time to a first season, only to scrap that and start over again a few years later? It's just weird to me, but I'm glad that Megumi Ogata is returning to do the role of Hanako. Although if she hadn't, then Ayumu Murase would've been another good casting choice.

Restart? So remake? Of an anime from like 2.5 years ago? What? Anyway not that I care, didn't like the anime much.

I don't know why are you all interpreting that this will be a reboot, they can adapt previous arcs without rebooting the show.

Have been reading the manga from Chapter 1 since the 12-episode 2020 anime ended 2 years ago. And as a manga fan, I have been wishing for a full adaptation of the series. And I am so blessed to have received the news. I am astounded by the incredible and brilliant writing of the creators (yes, there are two creators: one who draws the art and one who writes the story). When I finally reached midway through the series, I was saddened that it would not get a proper anime adaptation. But lo and behold, what a Christmas present this is from whatever studio is planning to adapt this! Thank you Square Enix and the other producers and the anime committee going to adapt the manga again. I am just praying for a full or complete adaptation. I can wait for many years. So, I don't mind watching a 1-cour or a 2-cour season or a split season of the Hanako-kun remake/reboot next year or in the next two years!

It needs a restart/remake because the original skipped important plot points. If the studio wants to work on a complete adaptation in the future, those plot points must be in the reboot.

I haven't even started the short anime adaptation from 2 years ago at all... but as a big fan of the little I've read so far, I cannot help but smile through the goofiest agape mouth face I've made in a long while. I'm really trying to resist the urge to rejoice in really loud and relieved laughter considering it's like 1 am here lol, but this really is great news!! I'm especially excited to hear Megumi Ogata again, it just feels like I hardly hear about her being cast in newer anime anymore and her older performances that I've heard so far have all been really enjoyable. Maybe whatever this new project is going to be will get me into watching seasonals again... either way I really ought to continue reading Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun again or at least start volume 0 soon :'D

Hoping it's faithful to the manga, if it's a reboot. And if a season 2 let's pray they first cover skipped material.
It is shocking to find how many people do not believe they can learn, and how many more believe learning to be difficult.

To think this was just announced just a few days after I decided to give this place a break for the winter. No idea I was sitting on the best news I've heard all year. Well, last year.

Very good, though, I've been hoping this series would return since the second it closed up.
Well I for one already loved Lain.
