Seriously, why? There is so much cut out from the original series that it makes watching these films a giant mess. They don't explain anything that happens, almost as if it's assuming that the viewer has already seen the series and that the movie serves as a recap. The cut out the entire backgrounds of some characters (mostly Kai and Hayato) and I don't know why everyone suggests watching these movies in place of the original.

A word of advice for anyone looking to start watching the original Gundam, just stick with the series. It may drag out a bit at times, but you definitely will miss out on a lot of character development and plot by watching these movies instead.

Maybe I'm wrong though. What do you guys think?

As someone who watched the compilation movies first - I didn't have much trouble piecing things together at all but I could kinda see how others would have trouble there with the pacing. Really, my favorite aspect of UC Gundam(the newtype stuff) was done straight up better across those compilation movies, especially in the 3rd as the TV anime ending was rushed due to cancellation iirc - the movies being what really made the original Gundam blow up from what i've read and Tomino's actual vision for that portion.

I prefer the compilation movies because of that, but they are distinct enough in certain ways with the amount of content cut/added that I would really just recommend someone to watch both anyways and not as some substitute. (The Orgin manga as well!)

I've only seen the movies so far, and for me, I thought they kept all the 'necessary' plot scenes because I understood most of it. The only thing that reminded me that they were compilation movies was how the story felt rushed at times.

Honestly though, I'd almost never choose a compilation film over watching the actual show. The only reason why I decided otherwise for Gundam was because of people saying that these ones were an exception to the rule, and that they're apparently a good place to start with this franchise.

For me, I watched the original Gundam series probably about 10~15 years ago. I decided to rewatch it recently via the movie adaptations. I was super bothered by the rushed pacing and lack of fair treatment toward any character that's not Amuro, Char, or Sayla. I mean, I think the movies work perfectly fine as a recap, but I'd certainly never suggest it over the series personally. Especially in the third movie where

I was actually thinking about giving The Origin manga a go, but I was having trouble finding it in its complete form anywhere online.

The animation is old and the movies generalize the story enough to make it enjoyable. Most people who say the original Gundam is the best is just nostalgic and probably in their 50's or more by now.

I personally believe Gundam Wing or IBO is the best Gundam show.

Wing and IBO are literally just the concepts of the first shows but dumbed down, only popular because of being modern and toonami.

For the love of god do not watch the movies instead of the show if you actually want to get to know the characters, the movies speed through a lot of the character development and sometimes outright remove important moments for the sake of brevity, they’re fine as a refresher and cool to see the updated animation but it’s not at all a substitute for just watching a 43 episode anime.

ComicWalker is on chapter 108 now and has regular monthly updates. Seeing that there are only 112 chapters, you won't have to wait long for a complete version, I guess. Especially if you are a slow reader:)

As for the initial question, I think the trilogy isn't the best way to start with Gundam. While it's good for a recap, and I enjoy watching it, a lot of my enjoyment comes from already knowing the characters. And actually, the animation is so good, I love the colours and attention to details and the nostalgic vibes it has. And the music is just perfect. But once again, not sure that it's worth watching on its own or starting with it, the effect might not be the same.

im the guy with the highest liked interest stack for gundam watch order on this site. I recomend everyone start with the movies rather than the series. its a smoother entry, and it's just 1 movie really ti start. if they get sucked in, they can continue. if not they didnt start some 43 episode series few will start unless they know they want ti finish.

there is also admittedly a lot of fluff.

the best version is Gundam Origins Manga. Everyone should be starting with that frankly.

The poll option are worded in the worst way possible. Being better or worse has nothing to do with suggesting it or not. I think the series is superior overall (except for the third movie) but i would suggest most newcomers (especially when they're not used to older anime) the movie because of updated visuals and being shorter. When you suggest something you shouldn't think of what YOU prefer, but what the person you're talking to may prefer

Comic Walker can't be used to read the series because they only have the latest chapter.
