After seeing them spar in both serious and in training, what's her motivation to pull her punches?
"Manga readers are annoying, all they do is complain or spoil the anime we discuss in an anime forum.
They should really do their whining at manga forums.

She is by no means holding her punches. Her father is very humble in considering himself however he is stronger than he realizes.

I think it's a combination of two things:

Belgrieve is a much better swordsman than he thinks - he got crippled by one of the demon lords when he was young, and just assumes that's the level of monster people generally engage with. Had he continued to adventure, or just avoided that encounter, he'd have likely gone far beyond Rank E.

Ange has mythologized her father from childhood and hasn't yet learned to see him as an adult would. She didn't take the first fight seriously because her guard is down - she's with her dad, so she's totally relaxed. She came back wanting to return to the feelings of her childhood, and he kind of ruins that at the end of episode 4, not because he's a bad person, but because he's worried that her carelessness could get her killed.

I wondered the same thing. In the manga she also seems to hold back, probably because she subconsciously does not want to hurt her father. I don't think she's purposely holding back though.

It's also hinted that Bel is able to beat her because he knows her attack patterns, which he chastises her for not changing since they are predictable in his eyes.

At the same time, I think it's obvious that Bel's actual strength is higher than what an E rank usually is, even with his peg leg. Whether he can hold his own against S-tiers though... I'm not convinced but who knows?

maybe it is a subconscious thing for her, but belgrieve is definitely strong.... in the fight with AA rank bordeux girl(forgot name)... he had some kind if aura around him. Also belgrieve underestimate himself way too much he is surely atleast A rank(if not AA/S)

I never thought of it until now. Ange always idolize her dad as this perfect warrior that can't do nothing wrong. Bel on the other hand always putting himself down but holds against AA adventurer. Since we're talking about the anime I can't go any further since it's in the LN. You really gave me something to think about in that sparing session. I would think Bel would be stronger or at least be able to hold his own against Ange. In the anime it said he never missed a day of training plus he always the one killing monsters around the village solo no matter how strong they are. Maybe a even fight? So back to your question I would say yes she did lose on purpose because Bel was telling her teammates he was nowhere near as strong as Ange said he was. She didn't want her ideal father look weak in front of them.

I believe theres 2 possibilities :

Belgrieve have inferior complex since the beginning.
He have great talent and potential but his own mind give him a mental block to go beyond E-rank.
He always go solo and never get a grasp how other adventurers power.

Or, he got something he didnt realize when he fight "demon lord" before retire.
A fragment power from the monster, something along that line.

If you pay close attention you would notice that Belgrieve combat prowess is analogy to his fatherhood.

It is absurd how much Angeline loves and respects her father Belgrieve. By the other side, Belgrieve is concerned about her daughter Angeline's well being and he acts when needed... The Red Ogre is a good father. He reaps what he sowed.
