Do you think more anime should be directed by the mangaka?

Obviously they wouldn't all be as good as this one, but I think there is merit to it.

I imagine a lot of mangakas have envisioned what their work would look like in anime form and if they get some help bringing that vision to life, it could be the most authentic an adaptation can get.

Of course there are times where the director can pull off something even better than the original vision, but I do think there is a considerable merit to having the author at least assist with the directing.

I mean mangaka aside, 2 of the most well directed anime that I have ever seen, sonny boy and death parade, were directed by the people who wrote their story.

Yeah but i think they don't have to be the director just being a part of the staff is already a good sign, i mean like the recent One Piece live action that Oda is taking a part of as an executive producer and look how success it is. But yeah it would be cool in the future if some mangakas partaking in their series adaptation.

lol not gonna happen frequently when mangakas are already so busy making their manga

the slam dunk mangaka is on hiatus of all his manga so he can afford to have time doing director job for this movie

Actually, the role of mangaka in making anime is also quite busy. Starting from providing source material (manga), being a script writer, to acting as a character designer.😗

No. We should probably think of this as a fluke. My guess is that it’s better for projects to be led by people with deep animation experience.

Mangaka skills probably only reliably transfer to storyboarding. There are certainly exceptions to that, I imagine Tatsuki Fujimoto’s deep film knowledge would help him in that role, there’s probably many examples like that.

There are other examples of this working (Hayao Miyazaki directed adaptations of two of his manga), but as far as I know those examples all involve people with previous animation experience.

This film was an interesting experiment, but I don’t see any reason to believe scaling this up would make anime better.

Yeah. Do I think that’ll make adaptations better? No, not really. Not every mangaka can be a director but the few that can are able to create something amazing. Which is why I think more mangaka should try it out maybe.

This definitely speaks volumes about how great anime can be when the mangaka is there to literally control every aspect of it. But I think for now it should start happening more in MOVIE projects. Where there's enough time and resources for them to do their work. In a weekly or seasonal sense the mangaka will have a very different experience, where he'll perhaps be forced to compromise because of various factors including but not limited to deadlines, broadcast schedule, censorship, etc.

Why not, as long as they have more understanding about cinema than what comicbook entails (like framing).

This movie for example is full of nice sport moments and the camera work is pretty good for it, but other cinema aspects are lacking (visual telling/implications...)

No because manga writers don't always know animation direction very well, they should be advisors but most of them won't be good directors

@Guilmon1 well directors are usually doing storyboards and drawing manga chapters are similar to storyboards already so mangaka can be directors

@deg no because one works with page layout in mind, the other with time and sequence in mind, it doesn't seem that big of a difference but it it changes what works and how, someone can learn to do both but being good in one doesn't mean you are good in the other
