That is the first episode. Without it things aren't going to make much sense. (Although it is Fate so depending on how much you know about the series you may be confused anyway.)

I used to read the TYPE-MOON wiki quite a lot, read the Tsukihime manga and watched a ton of Fate stuff.
Sadly, I feel that none of the stay night anime will be enough, and I'll have to read the original VN one day.

the adaptions do skip a lot of stuff to cut down on time but most book adaptions do that. I am still making my way through the remake/remaster of the VN myself. it's good from what little I have played. I'd recommend it, it's on pc and switch at the moment.

but, before you watch fate strange fake, it's necessary to watch "the case files of lord el-melloi II", they have the same world

Case Files fits in with FSN, not Strange Fake. they just share a few characters.
