Welp, Shiki's abilities came at the right place at the right time from this arc tbh. It's just kinda sad to see how Kyoto ended up after all this mess.

On a lighter note, we got the cast back in the academy classrooms again so it feels like the old days. I almost forgot how amusing some of the character chemistry is in the show.

While it doesn't justify Tsubakiri's actions, I actually liked the backstory here. Tragic that this happened to Manaka simply because he felt sympathy, even tho I still disagree with his last words directed at Tsubakiri. The repercussions of this incident were pretty ironic and it's a classic example of a vicious cycle.

Oh welp, Tsubakiri is officially dead.

And lol, there are caring girls and there is Kuina

All I could think during that flashback, which came too little too late to really be effective, was it was your own damn fault your wife and child died for attacking the oni in the first place. I get it's meant to be preventative to save normal humans, but the show hasn't done a good enough job showing oni wantonly attacking them without being provoked first to justify it. Landed like a wet fart, but I'll give the show credit for actually confirming the dude was dead.

More importantly, Kiriyama is officially the luckiest character in this, by far. My god...

So basically you mean to tell me needlessly slaughtering people because of what they are and not who they are just breeds more hate and violence!? Color me surprised. Not sure how much I care about Tsubakiri and Manaka’s sob story. Everyone’s got one. In the end, the oni won but at what cost? Violence only begets more violence. The vicious cycle continues.

Also, where’s my waifu who does literally everything for me and bones 3 times a day? I want a Sazanami! Kiriyama’s got the dream set up lol.

At least I respect the decision to shake the general shounen formula by having those students fight in a real deadly battle even before they get to choose a room in their dormitory. But in the end the result is lower than my expectation, and I don't even have high expectation in the first place.

If it was ep 11/24 i would dropped it today, premise was good, but screenplay is terrible, mc is another "power of friendship" which is unbearable at this point.

And who decided that we need to know everything about everyone, including the bad characters, and devote half the episode to flashbacks from the past? Will this one bad guy be the main villain until the end of the series? Or will he get beaten up and then there will be flashbacks of the next villain?

Both the attempt at eliciting last-minute sympathy for Tsubaraki and "Sazanami kind of scares me" had me dead.

It's a little concerning how ready Byobugaura was to volunteer herself into homelessness "for the greater good".

Kuina's schedule, my respects, is excellent material for doujinshi with various interesting tags. The episode is good, and this story arc finally concluded. As for the trash's backstory, yes, I feel sorry for his colleague's family, but he wasn't particularly smart either, since absolutely all the victims were his fault, and then young oni, who went berserk, who was driven to this state by the murder of his family. Let's just say Mei's family didn't bother anyone, and none of the three were aggressive, but the trash and his chupa-chups lover attacked them, and the final dialogue about the wife made me laugh. Better to be fatherless than with a bastard and murderous father, so nothing was lost.

Tsubakiri backstory like that’s gonna make me feel sad for him lmaoo, fuck him. He had a kid himself and still abused and treated oni children and families like that. Even if she’s not human, that little girl he was abusing clearly looked like a child. Killed her family in front of her and tormented her, got what he deserved. Rest in piss, hopefully his kid will be better.

We finally got a glimpse of the Momotarou's side, and why they hate Oni so much, this time showing Tsubakiri's backstory, and honestly, I'm surprised, it was really solid.
Obviously it doesn't excuse the cruelty of Tsubakiri, but you can now understand why he was so cold towards Oni, they basically took his parents, and more importantly, his dear friend, that showed him why it's good to be alive. And his friend died exactly because he felt sorry for the Oni kid, just to later the kid go into berserk mode, and kill a bunch of people, including his friend's family.
Yomogi was able to survive, because Mudano just decided to spare her, since he could just easily break the box she made, but ok, Mudano had other priorities, fair enough, but this decision is going to bring them problems in the future for sure. Yomogi also revealed that Tsubakiri actually had a family of his own now, that was the most surprising honestly. I guess it's better for Shiki to not know he left a kid orphan.
I found the "Tsubakiri, dead at 31" interesting, are they going to do it for other characters?

Also, the doctor guy is alive! Not much of a surprise honestly, since I always suspected he didn't really die, but now we got that confirmation, and how he did it: by using his power on himself.

That scene where Shiki, Mudano and the doctor guy watch the sunrise was a pretty shot!

It seems they are not going on a "school trip" (which we all now isn't going to end well), but we still got a bit more of interactions between the characters, getting to know them better.
Kuina is totally obsessed over Rokuro, I would be afraid too. The word Kuina says (when talking of what she will do with him) that is censored is supposed to be what?
Also, they are making the green haired guy such a pervert, that I just really don't like him. He had so much potential as a character, but they ruined that. Even before going back to school, in that scene where they show the characters that "had a bad time", for him they only showed a box of tissues and his glasses, and well, at first, with the tissues, I thought he was having his alone time, which would be kinda weird to show in between all that, but then they showed his glasses so I though "ohh, he's actually crying" (I mean, why would he take his glasses off to pleasure himself, right?). Well, I was wrong, he really was pleasuring himself, as later revealed when he said he couldn't have "alone time", since he got paired up with the teacher (btw, this comment didn't make sense, since he would be paired with someone, that was already confirmed, he wouldn't have alone time either way). Like, the anime was doing a "oh, they are having an hard time" moment, but the green haired guy was having an amazing time it seems.
Surprisingly, Ikari is becoming a more interesting character than what I was expecting.
And Jin is having that character thingy where they feel depressed because their rival is stronger than them, I suppose.

I'm guessing the next arc is going to show more of the characters, and probably give more time to Jin to stand out due to that too.
Also, Shiki and Jin sharing a room might be the beginning of their Naruto-Sasuke relationship (that was almost BL at times honestly). I hope they nail that kind of relationship though.
But things are not going to be smooth to Shiki any time soon it seems...

I wonder if Mei will reappear in the story later on.

Anyways, I'm still unsure about the decision of making Shiki this powered up so early on in the series... We're only 11 episodes in, and Shiki was already able to kill one Momotarou alone... Yeah, there might be some stronger ones, but Tsubakiri was never shown to be "the weakest" commander or anything, only that he started in the investigation team...
I don't know if there's any manga reader than can answer it, but how many volumes have been adapted already? Since I'm pretty sure we only adapted a few, and the series has already around 25 volumes, so I really think this power scalling is going to hurt the series in the long run.

Anyways, this episode finally showed us more of the Momotarou's perspective.
I especially liked how Shiki realized that killing Tsubakiri didn't really bring Mei's parents back, which is a reflection to his own situation, since he wants revenge on his father's death, but will killing Samidare bring his father back? In a way, he already realized that answer by himself, and that was actually a really interesting way to resolve this issue. The ending theme being "What is Justice" is fitting for this conclusion of the arc too.

I suppose we're still getting at least 1 more episode with this set of opening/ending, although we are already moving on into another arc. I don't know if I'm ready for the new set, considering this one was pretty fire! WHAT IS JUSTICE?

I can't comprehend how they're trying to make the Momotaro sympathetic, even in the backstory they gave these guys were going around killing families of Oni.

They were already actively committing genocide before anything bad happened to them personally.

About 5 seconds into the villain's sympathy-chasing flashback, I was very accurately guessing each next step of the way. The only thing I didn't guess was the reveal of him having just had a child, but I lost my shit at that point. Not sure how they managed to make that so ridiculous it was funny, but here we are.

Once again, none of the students are particularly likeable. Best one is eyebrow piercing because he actually doesn't really have anything annoying about him yet. Next best are Hellraiser's child without the needles and the self-worth void, but that's mostly because they don't talk as much of the rest of them do.

Idc about the backstory of the evil momotaro though the one thing I was curious about - the death of gravity guy and it wasn't even clear. A rampaging oni killed him just like that? Also they won't go into rampage like that if the momotaro aren't hunting them like pigs. Idc how many of them dies they brought it to themselves. So far they haven't shown onis killing innocent people deliberately

If I was Shiki when Kuina Tells him all the things she does After she said she wipes his butt I would’ve said “AYO PAUSE WAIT A F’N SEC…DID YOU JUST SAY WIPE HIS BUTT?!?!?!. I understand wanting to have Seggs with him constantly but is that Necessary?!”

But ay, Kuina’s a Baddie tho. I think she’s my fav character next to Shiki. Def want her blood powers as well cuz nothin like beating Momotaro with just your fists

Your team is out actively hunting down families, but you suddenly feel angry you didn't do worse when Your family is dragged into it? The kid went berserk after you broke into their home looking to end them.

Also... do we really need a flash back for every character these days? It's not even representing the growth of some continuing the story, and if you wanted us to care about the person's fight, having the story before the fight ends feels like it would be more beneficial. Maybe it's okay for a fight with a villain to just show growth for the main group of characters of the story?

They pointed out the urgency on leaving and suggested the room was going to collapse multiple times, yet by the time the vice captain momotaro found the captain (after the oni evacuation), still nothing had changed.

"Did you know that Mengele had a sad backstory? He even had a family!!" Oh, come on... You can't just make the most comically evil guy ever and try to justify his cartoon shenanigans with "My death squad friend died when we were hunting a kid for sport".

Also, wow, this anime sucks at humor. Yeah, I don't think I'll be sticking with it for another cour.

Tsubakiri's sob story doesn't work. Like, at all. "My friend died while we were out killing civilians so now I'm willing to kill children over getting my clothes stained". He should've either gotten tone down or stayed pure evil. I guess at least they tried. Green dude continues to be beyond annoying, this show is so bad at comedy lmao. Also, everyone in that classroom is clinically insane.

The Kyoto arc is finally over. I didn't expect to last too long since the introduction arc was too short but its quite nice the improvement in this Anime episode after episode. We also see how an Oni can kill innocent people and why the Momotaro don't see them as human beings. They made Tsubakiri slighy more sympathetic without feeling like other completely different character from his introduction.

I'm enjoying this Anime a lot. With slighty improvement in the animation, it can be even way better.

@ToumaTachibana

Not exactly sure how Tsubakiri is more sympathetic, before flashback he's a sadistic piece of crap who's committing active genocide, in the flashback he's an indifferent piece of crap who's still committing active genocide, after flashback he's a dead piece of crap who died trying to commit genocide and now randomly has a daughter, who's probably the same age of the girl he sadistically tormented and tried to murder.

Even in the flashback, the oni kid only went feral and attacked people because the Momotaro's murdered his family and tried to murder him.

There's no version of events that make the Momotaro look good here.

@JewelRunner I'm thinking similarly as you do.

I don't necessarily think the backstory was supposed to force us into feeloing sad and sorry for Tsubakiri and his partner. Sometimes backstories will just tell us some background info on a character! It's not the role of a backstory to make us feel sympathy for a character. Whether we feel sorry for said character is all up to us as individuals.

So to me, the backstory did work to showcase more of the main villain of this initial arc and the way the Momotaro (even the different one that actually prays to Onis after their death) tend to think and act. Mmaybe the flashback placement in the story would've worked better before his defeat and death tho. The backstory however did not work in the "we should feel sorry for him", cuz like you said... during the backstory even before the death of his partner, both were commiting genocide and invading homes and attacking first to kill Onis.

Tsubakiri's life before being the Oni exterminator as a researcher, scouted by Manaka Momobe, he treated him like a close buddy, but died out of sympathy to the Oni thinking that they can live alongside each other. And that's where the idea of using him as his puppet became a sole factor for Tsubakiri fighting together against Oni, though that seems to be the end dur to Enki's raging fire. In the same manner, Kyoya saving himself just enough blood to survive, as is Mudano being released due to Yomogi enclosing herself. In the end, all that Tsubakiri stood for, him being influenced by Manaka in both work and family issues, but died tragically in the same manner.

The Onis surviving to the next morning back at Rasetsu Academy to continue their classes, Kuina and Juji sure feel jealous for Rokuro having dibs first between him and Kuina, though the other guys sure would not feel comfortable with one another. Since there's only the pairs of Kuina and Homare, the guys are stuck with either one another, or Mudano (which is the worst case possible).

Trouble with Shiki is only going to manifest from here on out...

Why is this anime so censored? Why not just kill the guy in view? The death was so anticlimactic and not impactful at all. Also, why tf was the building intact even thought it was literally actively burning, huh?? There's 8 children, but I only counted 8 ppl going on the ship.

I agree though, why are we suddenly supposed to care about Tsubakiri?

kind of unusual to me for a character to get a backstory and still die
you can't spare a momotarou though because he'll definitely just continue slaughtering your kind
just like you can't spare an oni, even a child, because you don't know when they'll go berserk and kill the people you're supposed to protect
even though the oni are more like humans than the momotarou think, the momotarou do not have any reason to believe otherwise
it is easy to interpret their emotions and anguish as simple human mimicry to pull their heart strings like the demons from Frieren do
that is why Tsubakiri was so disgusted with Shiki's talk of morality
because any member of a species that can turn around and slaughter the only good man who had just spared her life must be apathetic monsters

also yusurube's scene when he lost the rock-paper-scissors was animated so smoothly i was kind of surprised
