The flashback scenes and special ending seem like a way to fix the pacing for whatever is coming next... not that I mind at all! During the confrontation I kept thinking that I would've been like "I stick by my friend, I'll give her a chance to explain later" (while still being scared on the inside) - but of course Hinako's reaction is way more fitting. Can't wait to see where they take it from here.

I don't know enough about Japanese folklore to interpret the meaning of the fox spirit form, but I'll let myself be surprised.

7/10.

The episode confirmed what was insinuated in the previous one (Miko is a yokai), but there was no further development. The last five minutes were dedicated to comic relief.

PD: It is a detail but the teacher (Noyama?) is the first minor character with eyes. Will he have more relevance later?

THAT ENDING

Great ep.

Miko is such a baddie at the start of this ep.

Honestly it was really interesting to watch because i just kept trying to figure out who Miko really was.

I actually thought she would be some kind of demon hunter, not a yokai, but she turned out to be a fox (Kitsune?)

Btw her phone case is also shaped like a fox.

Tbh i really like Miko.

The cooking scene is very funny.

I actually dont think Miko will die because she is a really cool character.

And btw it was never mentioned that she is Hinako's enemy. I mean yeah, she is a yokai, so what?
Maybe she wants to be Hinako's friend, plus she protected her from other monsters.

Or maybe mermaid and fox both want to eat Hinako.

Ngl, Hinako has a special talent for attracting lesbian monster girls.

And that ending is just amazing.
I didnt expect that.

Miko is really full of energy, typical genki character, i love genki.

This anime is AMAZING. Episode 4 and its still perfect. I hope it stays that way, im waiting for the next episode!

Such a nice episode!
She might not be a human either, but definetly protecting Hinako, and not for the day when she eats her.
I called it she is a fox spirit, but what a huge and majistic one she is!!
Super excited for next week's episode.

Yea, lying about one's identity is nothing compared to the deed of protecting them for 10+ years, while also letting them cope with grief on their own terms. What is Shoiri's plan if fans have anything to say about the end ship?

@six20 I don't think she did protect her for 10+ years though, the childhood memories of them together were fake - but I still agree with the point it does seem she has Hinako's best interests in mind to what end im not sure but I think it's positive (I hope haha)

@Allblackj52 I assumed Miko offering her hand to a young Hinako was real, even if the childhood memories were fake, but I could be wrong.

Miko was a huge help to Hinako after suffering familial loss, and you mean to tell me a lot of those precious memories were fake and she's secretly a giant fox yokai??? Ouch.

The special ED dedicated to Miko is quite cheerful and fun...I hope Hinako doesn't have to lose her as a friend.

I thought Miko was a dragon because of the red hair and the yellow eye that opens in the opening after a frame of her but a kitsune makes sense with the name since shrines and Amaterasu. I wouldn't call kitsune yokai though.

We’re approaching where I stopped reading in the manga, but we have our first big twist…which will be followed by Shiori getting definitively pushed back on for the first time…but I won’t spoil how.

It is an interesting love triangle and one of things that really differentiates this series from “Hikaru”.

I started this series with the manga, and it’s honestly one of my all-time favorites. When I read these parts in the manga, I got so hyped to see them animated, but…
ngl, the anime kinda let me down.
Still not dropping it though — everything before Miku-chan’s transformation was actually amazing, I really liked it.
The soundtrack and opening are absolute bangers, and the ending for this episode was super catchy too. Either way, Miku-chan’s still the best girl 😤
I seriously recommend reading the manga — the art is insane, no way the anime can match it.
Only thing I’m worried about is the pacing, ‘cause it’s way too fast. I think they’ve already covered up to the end of volume 2, while Yen Press has only released like 4 chapters so far.
Damn you, Yen Press 😭 you’ve only translated 18 outta 50 chapters, and the next volume’s not even coming till next month!

Wow, so Miko was with Hinako the whole time because she wanted to eat her too? But that doesn't make sense when you consider that Miko disdainfully said that Shiori is a man-eating yokai hmm

Finally got myself to watch this episode and it is done greatly. I can see miko's transformation design more detailed than in one in the manga and I love it.
I can't wait to see the battle between them not only physically and mentally. Hinako is luck to have 2 powerful yokai protecting her and the future episode is gonna be even better.
I didn't expect the studio to actually make the bonus chapters in the anime and the ending is a bit unexpected for me. Overall, things are quite above my expectations for the anime and Im loving it. ❤️

I rly thought that Miko would be an exorcist at first, protecting Hinako all this time... But it's so much better, she's a Kyubi (Nine-tails)!!!!!
While technically a yokai, unlike most other yokais, Kyubi (and other kitsune type yokais) are often depicted as guardian or divine beasts. So she might not have been taking advantage of Hinako all this time, and even might be her guardian somehow this whole time... but the story can still went the other way as well tho, since at the end of the day a Kyubi is still a yokai afterall.

So Miko wasn't a shrine maiden who's been keeping Hinako safe all this time, but rather a yokai herself. Interesting. Now it would be good if Miko's intentions are pure for protecting Hinako and not twisted like a certain someone (some yokai?).

Lol that made her 100x times better :D

-----------------------

That said, Miko being a powerful Yokai makes so much sense. So she's the one who was protecting Hinako all this time. She already made it clear she won't let anyone kill/eat Hinako. There's 0 reasons why we should suspect Miko has bad intentions towards Hinako.

So, we have 2 very powerful yokai and they both want to help Hinako.

Did Miko say Hinako's cooking has become as good as her mom? This may be just her trying to act more human, but did Miko know Hinako's mom as a human or as a yokai?

I'm pretty certain Hinako's family has big history. It's entirely possible both (or at least one of them) Shiori and Miko have connection with Hinako family and that's why they're helping Hinako (although Shiori took her sweet time coming if that's the case).

I'm sure Miko is pissed because she thinks Hinako will hate her for lies, but it's clear Miko's feeling were real and she genuinely cares for Hinako. Hinako will certainly forgive her.

Now, imagine in alternate scenario if it was revealed Miko was evil yokai intending to one day eat Hinako. Poor Hinako may have not survived the heartbreak and actually killed herself...

P.S loved the special new ED :D

So what's Shiori's endgame here? So what if Miko isn't human? That doesn't really change the fact about anything that they've been together as friends and also protected Hinako as well from dying ever since.

Also don't get the whole if you know their parents etc banter as I have a lot of friends of which I've never visited their houses either nor seen their parents faces and what not.

Even though it was a bonus chapter from volume 1, it was still super interesting, and I’m glad it got animated since it’s part of the character development.
Personally, I’m really hyped for the animated bonus chapter from volume 2.

Yokai can manipulate senses and memories? OK, great. So, to sum up, nothing is real and it's impossible to be certain about anything at all. Heck maybe this is all just a giant dream induced by another yokai and all of this doesn't even exist. But on a serious note, since it wasn't that clear to me, I guess what they're getting at here is that Miko and Hinako haven't actually known each other for that long? Question is how long ago did Miko actually appear? A couple of months ago? A couple of days ago?

@ImmortalZero I assume Shiori's problem with Miko is that she's protecting Hina, meaning when the hypothetical time comes that Shiori tries to eat Hina when she becomes happy Miko will protect Hina. Cause remember in all of this Shiori is technically the bad one considering she literally wants to eat Hina.

and I mean Miko don't look weak so I presume Shiori sees her as a real threat

I have a bad feeling regarding miko lol and I am 1000 percent sure shiori won't eat her even tho she's saying that she just cares about hinako deeply. I am thinking miko might end up doing something bad in future.

shiori cares about hinako deeply even if she says she wants to devour her but she won't

it's just like itachi saying Sasuke that he will take his eyes and killed clan but THERE WAS MORE TO THE STORY WHICH GOT REVEALED LATER. it's just like that in case of hinako and shiori MARK MY WORDS

@iamotaku999 Well I mean in a twisted sense of nature Shiori is technically on Hina's side since Hina wants to die and Shiori can accomplish that. Sure maybe its possible that Shiori has a more pure goal and don't actually want to eat Hina but honestly right now I find that hard to believe. (For now)

At least so far like she said she's just nurturing Hina until the right day comes that she'll eat her. Every bit of kindness Shiori shows to Hina just feels like a facade to aid her own goal.

And as for Miko I really can't tell you whether she's good or bad. I wouldn't say I've had a bad feeling of her but she's just very enigmatic right now.
The whole concept we got introduced to about how Miko used a spell to insert herself into Hina's life completely threw off my view of Miko I really don't know if she's bad or good so really all we can do is wait and see what happens.

But I mean I'll say this for now I don't trust either but I trust Miko more than Shiori considering she's presumably been protecting her for quite a few years and she clearly don't like Shiori and probably has a idea that she wants to eat Hina. While Miko likely has her own goal with Hina her affection for her at least to me feels 100x more real and genuine like Miko actually cares for her, where as I said Shiori's feels fake for the sake of her own goal

Definitely didn't see that coming, though it makes sense that something else has been there to protect Hinako as we've seen several random yokai attack her since the start of the series. The ending segment of this episode was super random. Felt like a side story you'd see as a short bonus chapter in the back of the manga. I guess done for pacing reasons if they didnt want to break up whatever is about to happen with Miko's true form now revealed.

Man, the music in this show is just incredible, these scenes wouldn't nearly be as great as they are without the enhancing audio work.
@GakutoDeathGlare I was looking for someone mentioning this. From episode 1 the soundtrack has mesmerized me. I remember I loved the scene when Shiori entered the class.

After that I searched and the composer is also the one for danmachi, which has some good tracks as well.

Well, well. So Miko is another "illegal alien". Lucky for her she doesn't live in the US. It still felt contrived that Miko's disguise disappeared just because Shiori pointed out the weakness in her identity.
I guess it would be too much of a stretch for Hinako to think, "Hinako has always been good to me. whatever she is. "
