They doing this hero thing is juat trying so hard to be different and kinda sucks. But the anime is dope. This is gotta be one of the first time I see things that just didnt hit how they thought it would but is still very good anime. Its only my opinion but what do you think about the things they tried so hard to be different with? ,not looking to fight just wanna see other viewpoints

Therein lies the trap: the author deceives you, making you believe that the story or the term "hero" has one meaning when in reality it has another.

Actually, you're completely wrong, the history isn't trying to be different, on the contrary, it's genetic, but a good one.
Wait and see, the word (generic) is used masterfully by this author; he knows very well what he's doing.

Certainly is one man’s opinion. I’d say hero is a wrong term for this. It’s not really that there’re being sentenced to be a hero, i think it’s more being sentenced to be a soldier that can be disposed of at any time/slave.

yeah better worded then I can do. but this is it. felt they tried so hard to say and do different things but its not made me think any less of the anime which normally its a put off but the art and character are amazing to me

If I have to analyze, there's one word that Japanese media always use when translating the word 'yuusha'.
That word is 'brave'.

Brave means someone who is always ready to face and endure danger and pain, no matter the risk.
In this case, I'd say it fits them even if they're forced to.

@Vouvoh No, you're just verbalizing the situation the heroes go through. that's not the concept the author is trying to convey.

Think about it: Xylo is a hero, not a hero because he's condemned to be one, but a hero in the purest sense of the word heroic. And the story is the same because the world of (Sentenced to be a Hero) needs a hero—a heroic, strong, resilient hero...
These aspects create a dichotomy between the hero this story needs and the hero Xylo is. This dichotomy is so exaggeratedly evident that the opposing narrative poles are inverted, making "being a hero" in "Sentenced to Be a Hero" the author's vision of the meaning of the term "hero" that has already been widely used in anime.

I see it as a double entendre. Yeah, Hero = Convict (and Goddess = WMD / Faeries = Monsters), but ultimately Xylo is also a real Hero in the more traditional sense.
At least, 2 episodes in, thats what it looks like.

Ultimately I don't care that much. This isn't the first show that flips the meaning of words, and it probably won't be the last.

Based off the two episodes, I know xylo is a real hero. Clearly putting his life at risk for others especially at the end of the second episode. As for everything else u said. I’m just gonna take the word of a guy who has a xylo pfp and most likely read the manga/light novel.

The only other animes that I find similar to this is "I'm quitting heroing" and "Ubel Blatt". That put a whole stigma around being a hero. I welcome this anime's twist since the premise itself hasn't been milked.

Normally it's
"I got kicked out of the hero's group"
"I got reincarnated with my op skills"
"Living my chill life in another world's country side"
"I was tossed away for being weak but with my skill I will have my revenge"

Above this is where I find fantasy to have more interesting premises. I wouldn't say this anime is trying hard to be different, it just has its own premise that happens to be niche in fantasy. Most of the top rated fantasy premises are already different from one another other than the face value of them dealing with magic in their settings.

@Vouvoh The way this author plays with terms that have become so generic in current anime, such as "fantasy world" or "demon king," is interesting, but it's still generic, of course, although being generic isn't inherently a bad thing.

They don’t really need to use the term “hero” in the show. The acts speak for themselves.

Honestly, I’m still not convinced this will be good. Not really interested in the tropy little girl goddess; feels weird for this setting too. Animation is pretty sick though.

I mean the author has captivated me personally. I dont normally like action and moreso fantasy due to how slopish it can feel. Y'know white castles, typical villages, vegetative green plains, the setting and most of the time world building that comes with it becomes so pain stakingly bland.

But in this story, I do like the idea of dark fantasy. Moreso, I like the idea of a fantasy with a corrupt political system where the heroes are deemed to be "bad people" and any actions made by the world's initial military is not an act of being a hero, but "following orders." As if its a calling to how governments and business make their decisions not by the needs for their people, but qoutas to be met. And i do feel that our goddess will break that mold and open the heroes eyes on how truly corrupt and unfair the system is, or by any means be a "light" for our hero in this falling world.

Mainly alongside with that is im just really enjoying the banter this anime has which is rare for these kindve shows where they force action scenes 60% of the time and/or very generic humor that shounen mfs SOMEHOW find amusing. I am constantly and pleasantly surprised by how this anime is grabbing me tbh and how I havnt got bored of it yet unlike freiren.

@Dellio_man If I were to make a comparison of how the relationship between Xylo and Teoritta works as a narrative, I would say it's similar to "Divine Comedy," where Teoritta acts as a guide so that Xylo can see the hell within himself.
Incidentally, the author likes poetry, and this will become more obvious in future episodes if the anime remains faithful to the light novel.

That's something, I also don't like frieren that much, and I also know people with a lot of japanese background who find frieren irrelevant.
I'm not saying it's bad or even mediocre, on the contrary, frieren is an extremely high quality production. However, narratively, the story gets lost between being a slice of life fantasy and being a generic shonen.

Only reason, Sentenced to be a hero sounds cooler than a soldier...
