Am I the only one that doesn’t really care about the MF Angel’s? Like I love this anime but sometimes the angels interrupt the flow of the show. It could be all about racing, the romance isn’t really doing anything for me. But then again, maybe that is just me.

They add an element to the show, bringing out the sleazy side of some characters and the protective side of others. But the cringe outfits really could be a bit less nasty given the lack of a minimum age?

I entirely agree. I’m here for the racing and the angels don’t appeal to me at all either. I kind of find them really unlikable and annoying when they cut through the race. I honestly find most if not all of the female characters annoying, especially when comparing them to initial d love interests that were written a lot better, like Mako for example. I could go on a tangent about this for a while, but I’ll leave it at that LOL

Yeah I don’t like their inclusion and I find them unnecessary. I get invested in the progress of the races and all the sudden we’re cutting over to them for some shit I don’t really care about. I feel like the romance would work just as well without her being an angel.

Just another gripe but don’t get me started on the one guy whose main character trait is loving 17 year old girls. Just such a strange detail to fixate on in an otherwise amazing show.

I’m not a prude whatsoever, but these 2 things just feel so out of place that it keeps me from rating it higher. Still really enjoy it tho

So I never watched initial d nor read the manga for either of these series, but are these MF angels cuts canon and meant for comedy relief or something? Agree with everyone else in this thread but ehhh, fanservice sells I guess

Race Queens are every bit a part of race culture as the cars, the drivers, and the races themselves. Always have been, always will be. The little asides don't take much time, so if you find them so distracting, you need to do something to improve your attention span.

I hate how they’re used. I don’t mind having them as an aspect so we have an interesting plot for Ren…anyone who’s ever been involved or watched motor sports knows that grid girls are a thing. I hate how lecherous and invasive the show is with how they used the plot line. Like i don’t fucking care, and neither should random Japanese salary men who are watching the race in a bar. Aiba having the hots for a grid girl - understandable. He’s literally there interacting with them. Guys mentioning in passing while watching the race on tv “damn that one’s cute” sus given the ages but understandable. But i feel like it’s a central part of the show which it shouldn’t be. Like if you had the MFG angels but cut out the stupid interview scenes and the pedophiles at the bar drooling over them…that’s perfect. The supporting angels don’t need screen time. Ren signed up as one. That’s all we gotta know. If you NEED to give them personality, do the interview scenes without the stupid cutaways to creepy old dudes at the bar.

I’ll get off my soapbox now

In Japan they are Race Queens. Learn the culture before trying to look clever.

It's bad, but it's necessary at least for the manga so Shigeno-sensei could pace the race progression more slowly.
As for the anime, they kinda have to include it since they want to adapt the manga as close as possible.

Also, I do think it's a way for them to suppress the budget and production time, since if they do too many 3D animations, it will take more time for them to finish them. Coreographing race with 15 racers isn't as easy after all.

I mean, I guess they could've gone with full commentary from the 2 commentators, viewers' reactions, MFG staff's reactions, and the radio conversations.
But as some people said above, it's the culture of racing sports.

This season has definitely toned down the fanservicey shots of the girls that's for sure. I miss my ass shots.

Yeah it was definitely for the author to take the easy way out so that he can focus less on the race. It's not like he also made Initial D which is also a racing manga and has no such things like mf angels and had over 700 chapters, which is almost 3 times MF ghost chapter count or anything.

The inclusion of angels in mf ghost is intended for several reasons but skimping out on showing more race material is not one of them.

this makes sense but i still feel its been executed poorly here. i feel like it only ruins the pacing.

at the same time the writer for initial d and this really doesnt know how to handle female characters. though the women in mfg are definitely better written than any woman in initial d

I didn’t try to be clever? If you phrased that differently, instead of being a pretentious dbag, I’d probably say “oh thanks i didn’t know that” but if you wanna trade insults or snarky comments like the one you just made - don’t worry, I’ll be happy to put you in your place.

So you being ‘a pretentious d-bag’ correcting someone with false information is ok? Whatever… I’m in my place thanks, a more informed one than yours.

Eh, while I know it's a part of the whole racing world, especially street racing, but I agree it's completely useless in this anime

First of all that's super sexist and misogynistic, and secondly the "romance" in MF Ghost is god damn awful (it helps that the MC is super dull and uninteresting)

As much as I generally do appreciate fanservice in anime, for everything is a time and place. And in itself, having some sexy girls within the racing scene would be totally fine. The way it is done in MFG on the other hand...

Even when the worldbuilding in MFG doesn't make much sense, it does still feel like this is supposed to be a mostly realistic world just like we live in. And with that in mind it's pretty weird to have minors dress up like that, have a camera crew that all but sticks the camera right up their ass, and have much older dudes fawn over them being totally acceptable behaviour no one bats an eye at. And it's not like this is some alternate universe where shame doesn't exist, as Ren at multiple occasions has made obvious she isn't all that comfortable with her role either. Though I still wonder why she became an Angel to begin with, considering she apparently had absolutely no clue what the job entailed.

Now if they were just some background characters purely meant as eye candy, I wouldn't even mind as much. But every single time they get to do their thing it's just pure cringe. Let alone when they become part of the plot in some way or form....like in the latest episode, where Shun literally recognizes Ren by her ass, and goes haywire because our main Gary Stu kept silent and broke his (ridiculous) promise. And this is no incident, this has been going on for the entire show.

And then there's Marie.....now I'm not above a fatjoke every now and then, but this season the way she is presented rather feels mean-spirited.

After recently finally having watched Initial D, I kinda find it hard to believe both were penned by the same mangaka. It feels more like a poor fanfic, doing everything wrong that Initial D did right.

Kinda agree here.
If this work was just about pure racing, it could have been so much enjoyable for me. Sadly, except the racing stuff, the author doesn’t do anything else right.

Honestly, even the racing is not up to par. I mean, in Initial D the races were one-on-one and pretty short, which resulted in exciting fights. Here the races are drawn out over half a season, and with so many racers we're not given any reason to care about. Sure, the CGI has much improved, but even visually, I'd say Initial D achieved more with the limited possibilities they had at the time. Those races being held at night also surely helped to create a sense of speed and danger. And don't get me started about the commentators....

But again much of this is a direct result of the poor world building and lack of character writing. I mean, as a supposedly legitimate racing series, MFG just doesn't make any sense, a problem that didn't exist with illegal street racing. And now two and a half season in, it's pretty obvious there's at most 3 racers besides Kanata that actually matter. All of the other ones are just rich bozos with fast cars and very little talent. Yet so far only once did we actually get a fight between them. And even that turned out rather underwhelming.

As a petrolhead I would want to love this show, but it's giving me a very hard time. I just keep hoping this is all still just setup, and at some point it does make a turn for the better.
