Well.. I've watched the whole anime series..
But I still don't get quite a few things though >.<
Isn't Yukito supposed to be the person that saves Misuzu? What does he, turning into a crow actually do for Misuzu?
Does Yukito's character become a supporting character after he transforms into a crow?
Was the anime's main plotline supposed to be focused on Misuzu and Haruko?
the theory is that due to the fact that yukito got to be "close" to misuzu (and misuzu to him! <- the important part, as that was the thing that triggered the rapid evolution of the curse's physical efects), as sora, the "curse" somehow "broke", and the entity that broke it, is yukito . (somehow being the keyword here ;) )
protip:
dont try to get deeper with this, as it will get you in a messy situation where timeline, plot and ideology ruin each other and probably ur viewing experience along with them.
just go with the flow!
and if you still arent ok with it, grade the show lower :D
yes, yukito becomes supporting character after that, providing very little the plot, as it shifts focus onto misuzuxharuko. i guess it was supposed to be like this due to the premise, but the anime keep on trolling with him and gave the impression that he was important even after his mission is over.
the main plot is supposed to be focused on misuzu and yukito, but the limited (and poorly exploited! imo) focus on haruko provides some closure (mainly misuzu and haruko becoming a true family) and it enriches the drama, things that couldnt be achieved so easily only from developing the plot around misuzu and yukito.
hope this somehow helps ...
also, watch air the movie. if youre into well put together anime, you will probably like it.
(tip: forget all about air tv and the movie will be even better)
I myself have a hard time understanding the plot and this has always been one of my favorite animes.
The anime follows the three story arcs that where in the original visual novel.
Dream, Summer, and Air
The Dream arc is when Yukito first arrives and ends when it enters Kanna's story (which is now the Summer arc) and finally Air arc. Which is scene through the eyes of the crow "sora" (aka Yukito).
First of all I think there are a lot of things that can be taken from this anime. It really is a beautiful story.
its weird because the Visual novel was originally a adult game, but obviously turned out to be anything but.
Anyway here's my batched understanding of the story:
The curse on Kanna ( a winged being said to hold the memories of the planet) was passed onto her many reincarnations. A cycle that would henceforth go on till it was broken on the 1000th anniversary.
Misuzu being one the reincarnations of Kanna was fated to suffer the same as those before her. However Yukito (descendant of Ryūya) was successful in breaking the curse. I believe that Yukito becoming the embodiment of a crow changed something in how the curse worked. Because he was suppose to have died but using the magic from his ancestors ( Ryūya, Uraha) he was able to avoid it.
So the scene where he flies into the sky is symbolic of the curse being broken, essentially.
Of course I missed a few other details that are also open to interpretation, but that's the closest I've gotten since I watched it like five years ago.
misuzu's fate was highly predictable from the moment uraha told ryuuya the vial-ocean analogy.
yukito's role was to "heal" kanna's soul so that the thing that happens in this timeline wont happen again.
misuzu is just a vessel. she was the one who suffered the efects of the "curse". even if the cause of her "illness" was removed that doesnt mean she will live/be like nothing had happened.
not to mention that even if kanna's soul was "healed" that doesnt mean that she stopped pouring in misuzu's body or that it vanished from it.
smtgh like: "she suffered irreparable damage while being sick" or "the sickness stopped evolving while in a terminal stage".
so misuzu was like a walking dead!
yeah, brutal but who said that air is a happy tale ...
I Guess it makes sense. I just finished the Series yesterday
And.. Yeah it is pretty Confuzing.
Only I still think there are some questions:
I Understand the fact that Misuzu is a Reincarnation of Kanna.
Only. The Breaking of the Curse it really confuzing.
Yukito becomes a crow. in his other life. & at the same time hes a spirit.
But he's not there anymore. And then Misuzu dies...
But, then after that theres the 2 children (that say something of a new begining)
But what the hell happened?
We dont know anything of Kanna. I would expect that Misuzu or Yukito go in the sky & save her.
So whats the hell with the kids? & why Yukito & Misuzu? Why did that happen to them
So did it work or not? because now there wont be any other person with the skills like Yukito & his mother to save a winged being
After I watched Air, Air in Summer & Air (Movie)
On that order. It made more sense. And it does.
Just that it would of helped to show that they do save Kanna
And why Misuzu dies from being Kanna's reincarnation
And Yukito having some kind of after life going to the past but being a Crow
Thats the only things that should of been made more clear by showing something that could of explained it.
Which they didn't.. but whatever. Its a Beautiful & Amazing Anime x3
I know this thread has been dead for over 4 years. But I finished the anime 3 days ago and pondered a lot about the end. I finally came up with a theory and I would like to share it with everyone.
I will be making a detailed analysis of various things to support my theory.
The Curse:
There were basically two curses o Kanna. One inherited from her mother, and one from the enchantments of the monks.
One of the curses would cause everybody she loves to get sick and eventually die, as said by Uruha. But a few episodes ago, Yukito tells Haruka that according to a particular curse, Misuzu would forget everybody she loves as well. This wasn't mentioned in the Summer Arc but is an important part of the curse.
The second curse would cause her to continue reincarnating and dying at a young age since the soul of a winged being cannot be held in a human's body. Meanwhile a part of her soul continues to remain in the sky having horrid dreams about her loved ones.
I'd assume that since there were two curses, one cannot exist without the other. Because even though Misuzu was clumsy, she did not show any signs of physical weakness or having strange dreams before Yukito showed up. So the activation of the part where a winged being's soul is too much for a human body would only be activated when she has friends and loved ones.
Ryūya:
Ryūya was affected by the curse cast on Kanna as well. So his wounds did not heal, eventually causing him to die. Before dying, he and Uruha had a child so that they could leave a descendant in the hope that somebody from his family will free Kanna some day.
Kanna:
As said before, Kanna was affected by two curses. The effects have been mentioned before. But what is noteworthy is the fact that there has been talk about an other self of Misuzu being in the sky in the anime even when Misuzu was he reincarnation. That would mean that only a part of her soul is what causes the reincarnation. Majority of her soul/spirit remains in the sky entangled in the curse.
Yukito:
Yukito was trying to help Misuzu from the outside. He did do it very well. He eventually decided to go away in order to help Misuzu but realised that he was meant to stay by her side no matter what. This desire of his, coupled with the magic power of all his ancestors (inside the puppet) turned him into a crow and sent him back in time so he coud be with Misuzu all along.
Yukito participated indirectly in breaking the curse. His words inspired Haruko to finally shower her love on Misuzu. As Sora, the crow he helped preserve the toy which would later play an important role in Haruka-Misuzu bonding.
After Misuzu died and the curse broke, he flew off in the air to look for Kanna's soul in the air which would now be free.
Misuzu:
Misuzu was freed of the curse in the end. Yes, that's right. Or more like Kanna was freed of the curse. The fact that Haruka did not fall ill and did not die are important factors determining this. She did forget Haruka but eventually remembered her and Yukito again. This clearly depicts that the curse was broken.
But her death was something that was inevitable because it was simply too late. The part of the Kanna's soul she had was already dominating over her body. But the important thing was that when she died, she was satisfied by her life and she was abe to get a mother's love, even if it was only for a day.
The Children:
This is the part where the biggest confusion is. Most people believe that they were shown to depict that the curse on Kanna will be broken by the boy. But this would imply that the curse had not been broken yet. That makes Misuzu remembering Haruka again irrelevant.
As said before, each reincarnation of Kanna consisted of a part of Kanna's soul. This would enable that the girl was also a reincarnation of Kanna. Since the curse was broken, Kanna was free of the cycle of life and death. That would make the girl Kanna's last reincarnation. This last reincarnation would be able to lead a happy life. That's what is implied when the boy says "To them: Cruel days, To us: A new beginning."
Now about the boy. Since Yukito was simply a descendant of Ryūya and not his reincarnation, the boy cannot be adjudged in the same way. According to me he was another descendant of Ryūya. I know it seems far-fetched, but imagine the child of Ryūya an Uraha having two children and those two having two more children each. A family could extend a lot like this in a thousand years. He too must've heard the tale from his ancestors and was himself trying to find the girl with pure white wings. Perhaps having better control at his magical powers than Yukito, he was able to find out the girl at a younger age. Realizing that the curse would be broken by the efforts of Yukito, he deduced that this was a new beginning for the last reincarnation of Kanna. And thus he said that dialogue at the end.
This sums up my summary. Please bring any loop holes to my notice.
NOTE: Do not rely on the movie for understanding the anime. The movie was made by a different production company. This is always the case with the corresponding anime and film adaptations of Key Visual Novels. The movie, though based on the same source, follows a comparatively different story. The ending and other various things are true to the film only and have nothing to do with the anime. It is a stand-alone media.

I just wanted to say that i extremely like your take on the series.
Hey guys/girls, I just finished watching Air (Loved it but my feels right now). I'm still a bit confused about what happened within the anime itself:
1. Yukito becomes a crow?
2. Is the curse broken?
3. ^ if it was broken why did mizusu have to die?
4. Why did the crow Yukito end up just flying off
5. Who were the kids at the end?
This is my understanding of the various bits but i'm sure i'm wrong.
So Yukito was able to break the curse with his own body as a sacrifice however with the power in the doll he became a crow and was able to be placed back in time so he could always be with Mizusu for the 1000th summer. Mizusu had to die because the spirit of Kanna couldn't be contained within her body and thus lead to her illness and death even though the curse was broken. Yukito as a crow flew off because he wanted to continue pursing the spirit of Kanna to save her??!?!?? (iunno)
and the kids are the final point. With yukito being able to return to the past as a crow, lets just say that, he was able to return to himself after being a crow and pursing his goal to save her. The kids are the final reincarnation of the broken curse and the Yukito who was once a crow had remembered his goal of his past lives, at this point however, finally saving Kanna and allowing her to live once again.
I'm a mess right now, i'm probably wrong but please give me any insight you might have!!!
