Here we are; the ultimate bad ending.

Admittedly, this might not have been a good one to dive into completely blindly and expecting it to be another typical Junji Ito work. Still, nonetheless it was quite a serious story that had a lot of heart poured into it, even if second-hand. The line between character, author, and adapter stretched incredibly thin in the final chapters, so there's quite a bit of room for interpretation. Can't really say I feel all that bad for Yozo considering how many of his problems were pretty much his own fault. He missed quite a lot of opportunities to turn his life around too, but that could also be seen as a respectable level of brutal honesty in one's own character. Maybe it took Dazai projecting himself onto a self-insert character that he could disassociate in order have that level of honest self-reflection.

Or maybe Junji Ito made up over half of everything in this version himself, and I will have no idea what was real unless I go and read the original book, I dunno.

Spoilers: Yeah, the ending left me speechless and I could not focus on anything else for the rest of the day. I mean as far as I understand, Junji is known for being over the top with his designs and such, so I’m sure it is made more graphic than it was in the original novel. However, manga panels and drawings will always look more impactful and gore than just reading the novel if it makes sense. I think the part where Oba meets Dazai is something Ito did and not Dazai himself if I remember correctly. So that was a beautiful touch for sure. The ending where you’d see the newspaper in the kite was the most perfect way to portray this. I absolutely loved it. And yeah, I think this manga is nothing like other Ito’s work. Most of his stories are rather short and don’t have one main plot. Which is why Ito is different and good at what he does. So this manga is a big shift and move for him I think. Great work. 10/10. I hope you enjoyed it just as much.

Also, as much as Oba is at fault, you also have to consider that he had depression, addictive personality etc. It’s human nature to give in to your desires. A depressed person looks for anything to numb his pain or distract them. Making the better choice seems easier to other people than Oba. He was clearly raped from when he was little and coping with such trauma for the rest of the life is no joke. As he will never be the same again. His life was destined to be tragic from the get go.

It was very interesting how Oba just never let go of what happened with Takeichi. Getting hallucinations of him throught the rest of his life, it's such an accurate portrayal of trauma and guilt.
