THIS IS A MANGA ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS ANYTHING BEYOND THIS CHAPTER.

Alright, I've just finished all 110 chapters. I have no idea how to play mahjong the way they do, my only experience with it were on-line games where you have to simply find pairs in a stack of tiles to clear it. That kinda reminds me of watching Hikaru no Go when I had no idea how to play it. The difference is that Akagi has an absolutely terrible way of drawing characters, no plot whatsoever and an "overpowered" main character who doesn't need to train or bother readers with learning hot to play.

Seriously, 13 year old (like hell he's 13 there!) who outsmarts yakuza and beats their "star player" during his first contact with the game while winning several millions from them. People who are standing have shoulders longer than arms, their heads are too small and body too bulky. Most of the time chins resemble pointed shoes and majority of characters has problems with sweating. Of course, you could say that it's the plot that counts, but there's no plot!

I really wonder why did I bother reading all of that, but I guess I'm just weird. Whoever compared this to Liar Game , Gamble Fish or Hammer Session is out of his mind.

There are a few things I would like to clarify with you first. There are not 110 chapters in total, there have been over 200 chapters released. Even now, Akagi is still continuing at volume 24. Akagi is the "name" of the manga, and the author's name is Fukumoto. Akagi is only 13 when he faces Yagi and Ichiwaka, but 17 when he faces Urabe and 18 when he faces Washizu.

Now, I would like to say that it is not the manga's fault that you do not understand how to play Japanese Mah Jong. You could have simply searched it up online. There are numberous links through the rules of Japanese Mah Jong. I've learned through that and playing it first hand. Hikaru no Go is incomparably bad compared to the genius depicted in Akagi. I do admit that the drawings in Akagi aren't exactly the best, but they are extremely well suited for this dark mood. The story's about Yakuza and gambling. I probably wouldn't want it any other way. There is in fact a plot in the story. It's a simple one. It shows the growth of Akagi and how he came to be in Ten (another one of Fukumoto's works which depicts an older aged Akagi). It primarily shows his talents in Mah Jong, and how he is able to manipulate the human mind in accordance in older to win. Why would Akagi need to train? Why does an charactor have to train in order to get better? It's not required at all. The true genius of the story comes from the impossibly well thought out tricks that no one would ever be able to think of. Fukumoto wouldn't want to even waste our time with boring training arcs. It's Mah Jong after all. Now, before you decide to reply to my topic, I would like to direct to doing a few things first:
1. Understand how to play Japanese Mah Jong
2. Understand the tricks that have been used throughout the story
3. Realize the genius in those tricks.
You are indeed correct when people compared this to Gamble Fish and Hammer Session. Those mangas are too light and filled with ecchi to even come close to comparing to the manga known as "Akagi". Liar Game however, is most likely good enough to compare with it...

So no chapters after this one is translated yet ? I really want to see how the washizu arc is ending :(

Bonar, you should have looked at the basic rules of mahjong before reading a manga about mahjong.... it's just common sense.

It is about three years later but I only just came across chapters 110-194, so I have a lot of catching up to do.

I like the suspense of this series, and if you know mahjong or at least "gin rummy" (which is somewhat similar), then the plot starts to take form.

Obviously, if you don't know how to play, you can't really appreciate how clever the plays are... and mahjong is still rare outside Japan. Sure they are games which let you match tiles, but that is is playing Uno with normal playing cards rather than Poker. No connection at all.

Damn, people were discussing this chapter in 2010 not having any idea how much Washizu mahjong was left, haha
