THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.

Damn, this show is getting even more moody now especially with a funeral.

Felt like this was another really serious episode in regards to the storytelling. Souichi not appearing really makes this show feel more serious.

This episode also didn't feel over the top. It was more tragic especially with the background stories.
Death is a harsh reality to deal with...

the first one really lack some resolution, i really want to know what happen with this ugly neigbour, what will she do?, how the hell the window is gerting closer?, i guess that’s Junji Ito for you.

the second one is very sad, i found this to be the most lighthearted story from Junji Ito. it’s sad to see that she always afraid of her father’s dead, but she’s already left earlier than him, kind of ironic.

i love the idea of creating an after image of a dead relative, wish i can though, there’s so much that i want to say to may grandma.

Oh gosh a Ma no Kakera adaptation? I get that it was different than his other works but we could get Black Bird or Red Turtleneck instead smh

I mean regarding Souichi's arcs, we might get his Adult life which is all came from the Yami no Koe series instead of Kyoufu but boy this really unexpected for me and they only making 12 episodes? so many stories gonna get left behind smh

So, the first part felt very unresolved...

But holy hell that second part. Best story this show has given us yet, I'm flat-out impressed! A brilliant idea and fantastic execution!

The first story was not that creepy except for that woman.

The second story, damn... I am still crying. SO much feels. :(

The first story ended so abruptly. I wanted to know what happened to that creepy woman. The second story is quite sad. She was an after-image the whole time. The poor girl. At least she came back home to her father.

@Inukanura 2nd story is kinda unresolved too, we didn't get to learn why his sister and wife can talk and interact while the other after images can't

My heart was racing when the neighbor kept trying to go over to his house. I thought that it was gonna continue going on until she was right at his window when he opened it, probably leading to a jumpscare with her face really close.

I think both the stories this week really worked well together, the first was just outright creepy and like how it just ended like that and the second story was more sad than anything, not typically what you tend to see from Ito Junji.

Jeez, the first story remembered a bit of nightmares I had as a child, creepy stuff.

Second episode was so emotional, like that little tone shift.

great episode, I liked the two stories, the first made me uncomfortable with the creppy of the situation, the second raises moral issues and was well developed, without needing to externder itself, it was the level of the story of the eternal dream. honestly, junji ito is a varied author.

if the series did not have Shouchi, it would be much better evaluated.

yes, this is actually really bugging me when i watched it, well i guess the older you are, the more incapable you become, but i think the husband has clearly explained it that “even though there are conversations, they never give answer beyond our expectations”, i dont know what he really meant by that actually, in the end, it just like a plot hole isnt it..

First one was the creepiest yet. I like that abrupt ending, he lets our imagination run, for once. Also, the stick scene is genuinely funny (sexual joke)

I really wanted to see some drama from Ito Junji with paranormal stuff. This second one has a cool concept but lacks explanation.

Overall, the most solid episode yet: 8/10

The other after images were from very old people and they probably didn't talk much to begin with. It doesn't mean they can't talk it just doesn't show they talking.

“even though there are conversations, they never give answer beyond our expectations”, i dont know what he really meant by that actually...

It's very simple, the after images can't to something that their creators couldn't image they doing. For example, the girl asked him to help make an after image of her father once he died...this was something that the husband had expected her to say because how much she feared her dad's death.

The girl's after image would never say that she she wanted to become a porn actress because the husband couldn't image her saying something like that ever. Even if the real girl actually had this kind of thought, as long as the husband didn't know about it, it was impossible for the after image to say it.

I don’t want to come across as one of those “manga does it better” people, but I didn’t feel the Window Next Door segment really did the manga much justice. The woman is one of Junji Ito’s creepiest drawings - and I truthfully didn’t think she would come across the same in any other medium. They did a good job with her animation. But her voice was not what I would expect. I hoped it would be much more disturbing.

I think the voice was good, having it sound like a normal old lady with lung cancer is creepy and unsettling. Having the voice dramatically creepy does the opposite.

I like how the flow of ideas worked in this episode, as it focused on one family moving into a town with a creepy neighbor, then focused on someone moving into a family with creepy powers.

I'm pretty sure this was intentional, so props to Studio Deen for some good writing.

I absolutely loved both stories. Thanks to the first one, I'll be having a hard time sleeping since my windows always make noises during the night. Also why did her stick have blood? Weird...but I guess not really.

The second one was really sad, when the after images started to happen I knew something really fishy was about to happen. I'm surprised that Makoto wasn't a after image, poor Riko. Everything in that arc is just so messed up... Sadly I can relate to Riko's dreams. Poor gal.

It seems the animation quality in this episode was better than usual.

I have to admit that the second story was really interesting to be honest. Not to mention that this one and "Long Dream" were the only stories I actually felt some kind of major interest while I was watching them.

The second story was also sadder than I expected... especially when I saw that the little girl Tomoka was an after image too, one who died young. At some point is kinda understandable why that family decided to do that stuff. It's truly a shame I found the "ceremony" to transform someone into an after image kinda funny with the final scream and stuff.

I'm starting to like Ito Junji: Collection now because of this episode. Regarding the first story, is it just me or that creepy window lady sounds like Orochimaru & Otose's VA? Or is it just me, idk.

The second story is great. I didn't see that coming about the truth about the MC. I was about to get pissed off with her husband, hooking up with his officemate and he intend to marry her eventually without having a divorce. Is that even possible? But after I found out that the MC was also just an after-image, yeah, it makes sense.

The first part had an ending that's open to interpretation, I guess. I feel kinda neutral when it comes to that one. The second one was way sadder than I expected it to be. Darn it, I wasn't in the mood for any tears...

The initial story was one of those who gave me chills when I first read it. It's a shame that in the anime, the lady's design was not exactly the same as in the manga, but it's obviously understandable.

Concerning the other story, it was really moving and made me feel simpathy for the main character. At least she can spend the next 10 years with the most important person in her life, her father, while they also prepare to say their final goodbye when the time comes.

A return to form after the previous episode.

Window Next Door was a decent adaptation of the story of the same name, outside of a couple of odd adaption choices (such as the neighbour's lips not moving as she talked) and the sudden abrupt ending that the manga also had I have nothing bad to say about the first half of the episode.

A Gentle Goodbye was a pleasant surprise, not only because it was not a story from the same collection of stories (opening a world of possibilities when it comes to what could get adapted) but also because it's a story that I hadn't read before watching this series. I think this segment was the best adaptation we've seen so far despite being more of a drama than horror, as the anime did an excellent job capturing a bizarre melancholic tone filled with thoughtforms and bittersweet moments. I particularly liked the moment when the mother was talking to the image of her daughter and the ending of the story where Riko finds resolve in knowing she had already died and chooses to spend the rest of her time by her father's side. Great character writing in this story.

Episode earns a well deserved 5/5.

Color me disappointed.. I liked a few episodes but I'm not impressed with the "horror" or the sub-par animation this shows putting out. The art on some of the creepy stuff is neat I guess. I've liked the look of long dreams, the hole story and the lady in the window.

Sometimes the art is really annoying, there's often times when characters talk but their mouths won't open.... I think this anime would've been better off made by other studio but anyway. The first story wasn't so wow, but it was acceptable. The second one wasn't horror, but it was kinda sad and I liked it.

I haven't read the previous manga, but goddamn that first part ended in cliffhanger and I want to see what's gonna happen to him the next night. Does anybody know if it was shown in the manga? That shit creeped me out.

The second part was so sad, though, and that reveal that she's been dead for 10 years. Jeez. It still pisses me off that her so-called husband decided to remarry again despite making her believe that she's been living with him for 10 years. Hahaha. Fuck that second half.

The first part really scared the fuck outta me. Waaah.

5/5.
