We got back to back episodes this week.

This one was fire, literally at a few segments. As the story progresss, I'm also interested in the adult cast and what their creative minds are up to. Rafał and his curiousity continously makes me wonder how he'll grow as a character. His personality kinda bounces between serious and childlike at times. However, it looks like it's part of his character being able to turn a flip on and off for his personality.

Sakanaction's OP is on-point...for being bland, but its visuals easily steal the show. Yorushika's ED fares no better sadly...

The Church's Geocentric vs. Hubert's Heliocentrism, Rafal may have some questions about that, but it becomes clear that the land he walks on, which norally acts like the Earth, he's beginning to notice its peculiarities that it contradicts with his theology that all planets move independently from each other, which is how the Solar System works.

Hubert believing the world has more beauty to offer of God's work without the Holy Scripture, he has his eyes opened thanks to Rafal, but leaves him mid-way to fend for his own. But to have Polish Inquisitors knock on his door and find his research on heliocentrism, Hubert saved Rafal out of condemnation and was rightfully burnt on the stake to death.

With Hubert's research done and passing the baton to Rafal through his necklace which leads to a secret box containing all of his work on heliocentrism that ultimately cannot be proven, it'll be too much of a risk trying to prove the theory right and challenge the proposition, which is not what Rafal wants. All he can do is to face the world headstrong, despite Polish Inquisitors like Nowak ousting all heretics before their message can detriment the community further, and Father Potocki wanting him to rescind his statement...which like Hubert, he naturally lied about it to avoid getting into trouble.

Human wealth sure can hide the truth so well to leave for someone like Rafal to carry on.

Another brilliant episode. RIP Hubert. He really changed this kid's life's trajectory with his words and his research. What a short-lived GOAT in my eyes. Helio-centrism is what Rafal is chasing now. To complete this research that Hubert started. He also declared that he's doing astronomy now but people don't like it, so he has to lie. LOL

Also, the OP is gorgeous and the same goes for the ED. The show has been amazing for these two episodes so far and I hope it continues to impress me like that. The music once again is very nice alongside great direction. Really enjoyable storytelling so far.

The cruelest thing about this anime is that I just can't brush off characters' death as "fictional death", they're real, they used to breath in the same planet as me, and I must share their pain, even if we live several hundred years apart.

Tsuda Ken voiced so many villainous roles, more than I can count, but I believe this is his most evil role to date.

I really like the OP, it confirms a full adaptation since every major characters are in there.

Actual animation is serviceable, but obviously the show's strenght lies in its plot, unusual content as far as anime goes and twists. A great direction is what it needs since there will be quite a few major scenes that Im anticipating.

overall Im quite happy how it turned out to be

Just what I needed, another two cour historical anime to fill that Kusuriya/Yatagarasu void in my life. As a former physics/astronomy major I’m beyond excited for the rest of this series. Never heard of it before which is crazy, but getting an actual grounded science anime based on historical events is so welcome.

The inquisition is one of the most interesting time periods and the intellectual conflict between astronomy and religion during this period is fascinating. Airing both episodes back to back was great because the ending of episode 2 perfectly sets up the rest of the story and leaves on that cliffhanger. Early theory is that the adopted dad didn’t want Rafal to get involved with astronomy because he’s either in it himself or was helping Hubert etc, but he’s definitely got some stuff he’s hiding. It would explain why he was so ready to take Hubert back after recanting.

Speaking of Hubert, damn man. Knew he was gonna get killed at some point but honestly didn’t expect it so soon. Was a great character in the little time we knew him, but I guess narratively he’d already literally and figuratively passed on all his knowledge and dreams to Rafal, so it’s time for a new generation to explore the heavens and prove heliocentrism.

This time period is so crazy to look back on because people were tortured, excommunicated, burned at the stake etc all because they dared study things that weren’t commonly accepted. The irony being their actions are 1000x worse than anyone reading a book or studying astronomy. As a catholic it really blows my mind how people read Christ’s teachings and then justified stuff like this and slavery. But I digress.

As Hubert said, religion and science are not incompatible. For those with faith, science only strengthens their belief. For example, the Big Bang Theory was proposed by a Catholic priest, as well as Hubbel’s law, constant etc. Isaac newton himself was a devoted theologian. Hard to see how narrow minded people were at this point in human history.. really they still are to a certain extent.

Nowak gives of Asekladd vibes for me, idk something about him. Tsuda Ken has had a ton of iconic roles but this could be one of the best. Can’t wait to see where it goes next

I've just noticed Maaya Sakamoto is voicing the MC. From singing the cardcaptor sakura OPs to voicing prepubescent characters, she sure has a vast portfolio.

Anyway, honestly I think the animation is fine. Not particularly amazing, but also not exactly bad. Not sure why I see some complaining. Im watching this anime for the story, not the animation. The premise is unique and interesting. Definitely looking forward to the next episode, or maybe I'll just read the source material.

Another good episode, this time showcasing Rafal's change of belief in his pursuit of proving helicentrism as a viable theory considering Hupert has shown him. I can confirm this gives me vibes of both Dr Stone in concept and Vinland Saga in style and both are great so the precedent it sets is (no pun intended) astronomical. Nowak is quite the menacing character indeed and it seems like Rafal will have to lie his way to a place where he'll be able to continue the research with other mind alikes.

Please, please become as good as I'm hoping it will be.

Wow, this anime is going to be really promising!

But first of all, isn't the opening a little too spoilerlish? We can already see that we are getting a time skip (well, that was to be expected), but Rafal is also losing one of its eyes, probably after being caught with the heliocentrism research, which I suppose is going to affect his studies, since he won't be able to calculate the stars posicion as good (I think). There's also a kid there, I wonder if that girl is going to be his daughter, or if it's the daughter of that guy that is killing the ones that to blaphesmous studies.

Anyways, you can see how much of an impact Hubert had on Rafal, finally being able to ignite that spark that he needed in his life to make it worth living, since it seems like he was living a life a bit like he was a machine. Hubert sacrificing himself, so that Rafal can continue on living, and finishing the studies that he started was really emotional to watch, and I'm really curious to see how the story will develop not that Rafal isn't going to live his life according to the "easy" way.

At the end, his "father" really seems weird, like he's afraid of something everytime he says something, and the fact that they pointed out that he has a lot of astronomy books at home makes you wonder if he wasn't like Rafal when he was little, but decided to go the path that Rafal just refused, that is living the easy life and go study theology.

The direction of the scenes of this anime are amazing really, and I'm sure this is going to be the dark gem of this season. Also, I noticed the manga only has 62 chapters, I don't know in which chapter we're in now, but I suppose that the 25 episodes we're getting will be able to do a full adaptation? If that's the case, that's going to be great, because lately I have been seeing a lot of animes that just aren't adapting the source untill the end (at least for now).

Edit: Forgot to mention, but both the OP and the Ending are good! Straight into my playlist!

@Joao321 I feel you. It looks more like a protestant-stylized propaganda anime, however dumb it sounds like, than anything even borderline historical. Kingdom of Poland back then was one of the most tolerant states and the Inquisition, its oppressive and intolerant side, was pretty much non-existent, especially compared to some other Catholic countries. Heck, Copernicus corresponded with the Holy See and even dedicated his opus magnum to pope Paul III.

What you can see in the show applied rather to protestant estates and states from 16th century onward. Weirdly enough, it goes along with fallacies spreaded partially by Martin Luther (who didn't like Copernicus, btw.), and his comrades from the next centuries, lol.

Dunno, I don't like that kind of stuff. And I'm not a purist demanding 100% historically accurate stuff from a history-themed show. Vinland Saga had a lot of inaccuracies, but was believable enough to make people like me enjoy it while having in mind minor historical inconsistencies here or there.

Folks who enjoy that kind of narrative must also be huge fans of "The Birth of a Nation" movie by D.W. Griffith. Quality production, but with a certain message hidden behind it and meant to distort reality. "Historical fantasy", bah. More like another anime that may be mostly praised in the future by snobs who prefer bastardised version of reality instead of something actually decent. But hey, it's seinen, so it must be masterpiece, am I right? ;P

Anyway, like I suggested earlier, this show doesn't click with me. But I'm happy for people enjoying it.

@Phlaryx You know, knowing weebs, many of them are gonna treat it like an animated history lesson, because it's seinen and looks good (as expected from Madhouse). ;) So I don't see anything bad in disliking the fact that this anime presents a twisted version of reality.

Would you like, say, an anime about Holocaust denial, and would you be happy to see happy people praising it for "historical value and brilliant setting", and getting rustled over anyone thinking othereise? I know, that example is bad and unfair, disgusting even, but it's more or less accurate when talking about how "historical fantasy" ain't a convenient tool to introduce every twisted slop of a story (I'm not saying that the Orb anime we're primarily discussing in this thread is one; I'm talking here about blatant cheap stories made for the sole purpose of controversy and gotten rid of all other artistic merits). One can do this, sure; there will be even fans of that kind of stories. But it's ridiculous to assume that something controversial won't be met with at least a part of the audience disappointed, upset, or simply not satisfied.

Funny enough, you can easily spot someone crying over a black man based on a true person present in the historical records playing an important role in a video game (ye, I'm talking about Assassin's Creed: Shadows and that wacky drama around it), but it's way harder to find someone complaining about actual historical distortions, lmao.

@Marinate1016 A Kusuriya/Yatagarasu fan who likes Orb ? Wow, are you my doppelganger ? Haha.

I loved your analysis and I agree with everything that you said.

Very interesting themes and great characters so far. I'm curious to see what will happen next. Hopefully the animé will remain constant and won't disappoint.

I knew that Nowak reminded me of someone and you are right ! It is Askeladd : the cruel and heartless man who looks like he doesn't care about this world and only adds to its savagery and violence when in fact he's a very respectable man from which the MC has a lot of learn. I sensed the same kind of vibe from his relationship with the MC as Thorfinn and Askeladd's : ennemies but also mentor/student // father-son in some way. There was a strange feeling of fear and fascination coming from the MC for the Inquisitor and I feel like it will be one of the themes from this show.

I'm not a manga reader, so I don't know.

There are only 8 volumes, thus I don't expect it to be very long - maybe a one season or a two season animé. And that's perfect to me.

Too bad for Hubert, but at least now he has an heir to his theory, and a clever and determined one at that. I think the father wants him to study theology because he may have already studied astronomy and didn’t get far with it, which might explain why he has so many books on the subject. Or maybe he had another son who studied astronomy and was burned for it, since Rafal is adopted, but there’s got to be some connection—hopefully, they reveal it soon.

Nowak also has an interesting story, being a layman, a former mercenary, and now serving as an inquisitor. He’s definitely the type of man needed for that role.

Things are getting exciting, and the OP and ED are fantastic.
