After seeing that first episode I really want to try it, but I'm scared of getting semolina poisoning from raw egg. Anyone else have an urge to eat some?

Japanese people eat raw egg all the time.
It's called "tamago-kake-gohan" and it just tastes like salty-slimy rice.
It's like the American Mac&Cheese or PB&J kind of thing.

Yeah, I have everything to make it but I'm just scared from raw eggs. Best way is to boil em a little bit and wash them properly.

I saw this in some other manga/anime before and tried it...and well, it didn't suit my taste.

Basically what this person said. Maybe it tastes better with white rice? My family only eats brown rice so it didn't taste that great :/ I didn't get sick or anything from eating the egg raw either.

Yup, ME!!! But I'm gonna have to make sure my rice is like, super duper fresh hot off the stove first, before pouring in my fresh egg! I give thanks to my dad's chickens ;-D

I don't think it's dangerous, usually when I make lasagna I dilute a raw egg with water and olive oil as sauce and so far nobody got sick after eating it. Not that I tell anybody though.

My thoughts during that scene actually were like "So it's rice, soy sauce and an egg? That looks easy enough!", I'm glad I'm not the only one who felt like trying it. Maybe as an interesting frugal dinner.

No :o

I do eat eggs but I have to REALLY crave them otherwise they tend to gross me out.
It's the yolk, I can't deal with egg yolks.

Tried it, the egg wasn't as fresh as the eggs in Silver Spoon presumably were, the rice probably wasn't the same kind and the soy-sauce I had with it was undoubtedly from a different brand. But even had my raw materials been exactly the same I can't imagine it tasting a whole lot better. I lacked the greatest spice, hunger.

Didn't like it overall, it didn't gross me out per se but it tasted slimy and unfamiliar.

What, it was a common at my place, at least in my family but minus the rice. To make it better, maybe you to need boil it a bit. I used to eat it a lot in the past but not really now.

I have never really enjoyed soy sauce, and am just slightly accustomed to it. BUt raw eggs are great for ya, and pack a punch!. NO white rice though, brown rice or black rice or forbidden ( any long grains really)!

I love raw egg and soy sauce! It's really tasty! The only downside is the temperature of the egg. If you heat eggs even a little, they begin to cook and I find cooked eggs pretty gross, but I don't really like cold foods either... It's a dilemma! :P

Glad I'm not the only one to try it out! Having never tasted raw eggs before, eating it like in the anime is a good way to tolerate the acquired taste of the raw eggs, and having hot rice is a must for it to taste alright. I'd definitely recommend this out to anyone who is curious.

It's not raw, the whole point is that the freshly steamed rice will cook the egg when mixed in. I've tried it and it's really nice.

Try once when my cooking gas run out and my house in blackout! Since I only got chance to cook rice not the side dishes, I try this typical fast home meal Japanese style to quiet down my stomach. Well, honestly..I don't really like the slimy texture but the taste is great! Make sure you eat it with hot steaming rice if you are gonna try this for the first time~. Oh ya..I put pepper powder to taste too and sometime with chilli powder as well. Yummy!

I remember when people said eating sushi was gross and disgusting. Now you can find sushi in grocery stores around here and tons of otaku are the first to say their favorite food is... SUSHI!
As Master Onion once said, "It's all in the mind." I'm sure if enough otaku here started making Tamago kake gohan and making it a popular dish, you'd see that spring up in Japanese restaurants if it's not there already. And everyone would follow.

The reason we Americans are so paranoid of salmonella (besides fueling all those cleaning product industries) is that unlike other countries we wash the "bloom" off the egg that guards against diseases. We also won't test chickens for salmonella and/or vaccinate for it. Where in Europe at least all the chickens get vaccines. That and our eggs are left in a warehouse for weeks on end before going to the store. I hear in the UK they don't even refrigerate them.

That being said though the chance to get salmonella is low. Even with crappy American standards.

I eat rice everyday but i usually just use seaweed seasoning. The anime makes it look soo good that i really want to try it haha. I heard using pasteurized eggs prevents the risk of salmonella.

I grew up eating raw eggs over rice in Japan, and it was one of my favorite food when I was child.
Now I am in the U.S., and I don't do that anymore.

The reasons:

1. Japanese eggs are cleaner

Since it is really popular to eat raw eggs in Japan (not only for raw egg over rice), the producers are extra carful cleaning before they ship their products, so that people don't get sick eating raw eggs (kids love the dish so). Unfortunately, in the U.S., the cleaning process of eggs is somewhat iffy for raw consumptions.

2. Taste different

I grew up eating fresh eggs and when I first tired standard U.S. eggs raw, I detected some unpleasant smell from them. Let's just say, it smelled unhealthy. I still noticed the smell, even after I cooked them. That made me wonder what kind of environment the chickens are in....

Then, I tried expensive ones such as cage free eggs, and the result is that some of them still had the unpleasant smell ( rip off in my book ) , but some them did taste clean and fresh.

However, that was too much effort for a bowl of raw egg over rice.

3. You got to have everything right

Remember, this is a dish to enjoy the natural flavor of the ingredients. If the rice is soggy, not good. If the egg is not fresh, not good. In Japan, some companies even make special soy source for this dish. Everything has to be right to be a good raw egg over rice. Otherwise, it will be some smelly slimy thing that you go ewwwwwww over.

If you want to try this thing right, you should go to Japan and cook good grade rice perfectly, and get some fancy eggs. You won't regret it.

I personally like mixing eggs with soy source separately from rice like this: http://youtu.be/Z2vsxQSZKgA

PS. Salmonella is on egg shells and not in the egg itself. Sometime it gets inside of the shells, but it is said to be 1 in 100000 probability. Don't use already cracked eggs for this dish though.

Cheers!

So I'm envious of my dad eating it. I want to try it! I wanna! I wanna! I wanna! >o<

My grandparents were relatively rich in South Korea, which isn't saying a lot since South Korea was broken back then. My mom told me that eggs were a delicacy and her and her whole family would just crack eggs and eat them raw. Sometimes they would mix it with rice and soy sauce for a quick but luxurious dinner. Not even joking.
