While I see all the tropes and elements this series seems to be using damn what a dope first episode. It explained almost everything it need to explain of the setting, I'm assuming ep 2 will explain why and how people become heros.

On top of that, the stunning animation that is like if Mushoku Tensei and Dec-dence had a baby, from character designs and to the concept.

It had a serious tone throughout without edgy shonen stuff like the main guy aura farming just because.

I'm very looking forward on this one

PD:what is this genre of guys carrying a woman or girl on their back that gives them power and shit, Sinduality Noir, Pragmata, apparently darling in the franxx does this too?

What a waste of pretty drawing on this god awful pile of garbage. Knights doing everything they can to die, don't even use the nuclear bomb they have because that would make sense. Of course they make heroes out of criminals rather than these knights who all WANT to fight and die, because that would make sense. Jumping 50 feet in the air, dodging things they don't know is there, exploding swords. Laughably incompetently corrupt clergy. My god this is some of the dumbest little kid garbage I've ever seen. What a total waste.

It was OK, I guess. Some of the action had more than a touch of Go Hands to it and some plot points seemed nonsensical. But the biggest barrier for me was Teoritta - if I hadn't been watching the screen, every time she opened her mouth I could have sworn it was Monogatari's Shinobu there instead. So no head pats from me for this one, but I might give it a few more episodes just in case.

@Desmascarado

I mean her design seems very harmless. If they went with the design of the light novel cover that's on MAL I could understand that it would create some controversy.

But I'm sure we're gonna see some fan service bathing scene or something, seems almost unavoidable...
@uselessDM Despite the suggestive cover, Teoritta in the light novel is never sexualized; on the contrary, she acts and is treated like a child, and judging by how the anime handled the contract scene, it seems they will maintain this.
Yuusha Kei has almost no fanservice, much less ecchi.

I enjoy these condenmed narratives like Game of thrones jigokuraku or clevatess but i hate the antagonists being made into cartoon villains, also what happened to show but don't tell? this really would have been better if we had been left wondering what his crime was, the flashbacks alone would have been enough to easily figure out he killed his previous goddess.

I just can't help but feel like these stories are made for kids
@PettankoLover well, they didn't need to show it because both scenes were just passing through in the light novel, but in the anime they chose to animate those scenes, which indicates a very well-done job and not something made for children.

I appreciate having this extra info, even if it wasn't meant for me. It puts me at ease knowing I'm not likely to have to drop the series halfway in after wasting time on it if they get creepy about the childlike girl.

That would be nice. I mean the scene that I was thinking off in terms of the bathing scene was the scene with Sajuna in MDUD where Gojo walks in on her in the bath. Usually I don't mind fanservice, but that scene I do hate because it's so unecessary and gross feeling.

So if we are spared something like this, I'm certainly not complaining.

I'm not usually a big fan of adventure/hero fantasy series, but this one has my interest so far. So far the plot doesn't seem outstanding, but it definitely seems good enough to be worth the watch. The goddess is a bit annoying and Xylo is also a little annoying, but not terribly so that I'm unwilling to watch them.

The biggest surprise for me is that I actually really like Dotta. Usually loud/cowardly characters annoy me, but he cracks me up every time he's freaking out about safety and then suddenly disappears/charges into danger only to fulfill his kleptomaniac tendencies. We'll see if he stays entertaining or becomes more annoying over time.

Also, I just noticed someone above said Yuichi Nakamura was supposed to be Xylo, but they swapped him? Don't know if that's true, but as someone who literally looks through Nakamura's cast list occasionally to find new series to watch, I'm glad he isn't MC for this one. His voice goes best with snarky/sarcastic characters *or* the big brother/mentor character, and while he can definitely do just fine with more serious characters, I like his voice best for the former kind of characters.

- "O Great Zelkoff-sama!". So the dude is praying to the god of cabbages?
- The blue haired chick looks a bit like Esdeath.
- Are the Demon Lords spawns of Nurgle?
- Unlimited blade works?
- Yeah, telling the objective truth never works IRL either.

Asking the real questions here, will the goddess finally stop being so annoying?

So far I like it, but the story feels like a tired cliché of unjustly betrayed protagonists seeking revenge, so I'm not very excited about it. However, the technical and visual aspects are spectacular, especially the fight scenes and the atmosphere. The main characters haven't really won me over yet, and their personalities are quite generic (especially Teoritta's), but that could change in future episodes, or at least I hope so. The concepts and designs of the monsters and Demon Kings are fantastic and the best thing about this anime so far. I'll give it a chance and keep watching, so for now, I'd give it a 7.5/10.

I mean yeah, when everyone’s already hating on me, I’m not about to give them more ammo with them catching me with a loli that wants headpats and praises lol. That said, this one honestly surprised me.

Even with some rough CG here and there, the OST is insane, straight up Hans Zimmer level. I was genuinely blown away, especially during the action. I couldn’t believe what I was watching. The best parts were him saving the guys while going down the mountain, the final fight, and the scene where he climbs the monster. That moment with Xylo having that realization in the smoke was great too.

The plot already looks really interesting, very Shield Hero season 1–esque, which I’m a big fan of, so I’m fully hooked. So yeah, no surprise, the show with a loli asking for headpats and praise is pure kino.

Absolutely awesome art style, I love it. Also, the animation is superb, as is the sound design (except for the music, which is... well, I’ve heard better).

Regarding the story... To be perfectly frank, I don't really like it. The MC is a great character with a lot of potential for the future, but he's basically the same as the MC from The Rising of the Shield Hero; it's an interesting character type, by all means, but also very one-dimensional at the starting point. I hope he develops in an interesting way.

But the rest of the characters... Well, they are as generic as it gets, and boring as well. The loli goddess is straight-up annoying lol. I'm honestly a bit tired of this kind of terrible writing where most of the side characters in antagonist roles are just total morons who make the stupidest decisions ever, or buffoons focused on "honor" or something like that. In a situation like that (a massive all-out war with demons), the humans would have been wiped out in less than a year if they actually behaved like that. Also, the corrupt evil church is yet another cliché that is overused. And, to be quite frank, the execution of those tropes in the first episode is... mediocre at best, I'd say.

I'll watch it all since it's dark fantasy, which is a rare genre, but I'm a little worried about the direction this show is going in. Well, we'll see, though.

I’ve seen a lot of people saying the opening dialogue was forced, but I watched the episode twice and it felt completely normal to me. The world-building explanation didn’t bother me at all. Maybe it’s because I’m watching it in Brazil and the translation is different, but I honestly don’t see what was forced about it

Very fun first episode. I really love the decision to make the first episode an hour long; it really served as a good introduction to the world and would have felt awkward either being edited down or spread across three or so episodes.

The production values were impressive. I loved the direction and animation. The sound design was excellent. I liked the OST and thought it fit the mood atmosphere they were going for. I am really looking forward to more.

Somehow I just knew this one will be a big budget type of 1st episode and it didn't disappointed.. but gotta say it was frustating to watch for the first half, and I keep guessing the reason why he hated the "goddess", and I was right about his association with one before, but I gotta say the "power" of goddess is not what I expected.

Anyway, looking forward to more episodes, because I think it could be one of my favorite for the new year
@Kai200X Same, is hard to enjoy the battles and the confrontations without knowing the real reason of the protagonist

I don’t understand such a high score and all the hype. The episode is just meaningless fireworks, with animation above the usual level that we all know it won’t be able to maintain and that will end up overusing CGI, a horrible creature design, generic characters, and a very generic script. The only thing I find noteworthy is the soundtrack

Pretty good first episode. I am interested in seeing were we will be going with this as Xylo hunts for the men to framed him while having to fight a war at the same time. From what I can see we will be getting a fairly large cast so hear is hoping they can pull it off.

One question I have to any who may know; is this a post apocalyptic world or something? The tech is all over the place with men using chainmail and spears along side a giant bomb with modern looking controls and I swear I was seeing what looked like the ruins of modern buildings in the background in some shots including and I-beam.

@ossian No, on the contrary, the anime will use less and less 3D/CGI, since, from the second half of the anime onwards, fewer and fewer monsters will appear.

In other words, it will get better and better with each episode. 🔥

WAIT, novelist Rocket Shokai is getting BOTH of his series animated in Winter 2026 alone?
First this one, and then Yuusha no Kuzu a.k.a Scum of the Brave next week?

The rather weak kid Dotta Luzulas getting his ass saved by his fellow hero Xylo Forbartz from the faerie monsters called Demon Blight while helping the incompetent Holy Knights, the former can't always have the latter save him, but to steal a coffin that's worth some value, and find a girl resting inside whom they know as a goddess as the "so-called" last rays of humanity's hope. Worse, having the 13th guardian Goddess Teoritta unknowingly resurrected to assist them both to help the Holy Knights out of their rut against the faeries, as much as it irritates Xylo to see Teoritta alongside him where she should've been alongside Dotta instead, the former holds his weight well against quite the horde.

However, the Holy Knights knowing that Xylo being a penal hero due to his criminal convictions only infuriates them, and the message from their end (via Venetim Leopool) confirming their worst fears to die for the greater cause with their 13th Holy Order Captain Kivia Patausche to decimate the Demon Blight, the heroes can only consider volunteering themselves should the Holy Knights need their help. And it's also through Xylo's own instincts should he want to help defeat both the faeries and their 47th Demon Lord Awd Goggie.

With the Demon Lord and its faerie minions raging across the land, both Xylo and Captain Kivia have to strategize their support, though being heroes and Holy Knights respectively does cause quite the rift between the two. And it gets worse when the Demon Lord literally evolves into a bug and throws everyone into disarray with its eggs, sending them into panic. The persistence of Xylo not wanting to make a pact with Teoritta, as much as the Holy Knights under Captain Kivia are facing their imminent end, the hero has no choice but to take her offer, and eliminate all of the Demon Blight, as well as their Demon Lord, in Kivia's stead.

Xylo learning of Teoritta's abilities as he faces both the faeries and Awd Goggie, the power that he needs to defeat the Demon Lord is quite the spectacle. And along with Dotta's stealing enquiries that comes a scorched earth seal to finally kill the Demon Lord, the weakling at least contributed in some way that is worth the thanks from Xylo. And Teoritta wanting her praise that he remembers his past as a Holy Knight, being in the same regard to having a pact with his previous goddess Senerva, only to "kill" her back then as the Federated Kingdom's Galtuile Fortress has no records of it, with Xylo knowing that her power has reached her limit. Unfortunately, his story is not painted in a modest light by the authorities who continue to label him a goddess killer, it's the people who are ungrateful for his work, sentencing him to be a hero, that enrages the fuel for revenge for Xylo.

If this one already hits out like a banger, how would the other one fare?
Given how this movie-like premiere is seemingly already one of the best to start 2026 strong, let's see how this one can last the long run.

@thomasward Well said! I totally agree.

I like revenge plot but everyone is so egdy it is hard to take it seriously. I hope it will tone down.

Monsters design is complete garbage though - some blobs of shit with distracting neon elements.

And animation is great but this big battle left me completely uninterested - useless background characters watching MC slautering generic monsters with predictable outcome.

I hope they focus on revenge and it won't turn into boss rush. Please let me know if it is.
