Banger ep, but I feel like this whole season is moving too fast, and skipping things, no? All connection to Mai is in season 1, and it feels like there should have been much more story and dialogue from her right before her death. The previous seasons were much more explanatory and had more cohesive stories. Is the manga also this fast paced in this arc?

Jujutsu Kaisen S3 Ep 4 had me hyped for Maki vs the Zenin Clan - a revenge-fueled showdown for her and her sister. But, tbh, the animation didn't quite live up to expectations. It felt a bit underwhelming for such a crucial fight.

That said, I loved how Maki's revenge played out - she went full-on beast mode, taking down everyone in her path. She's lowkey one of the most powerful women in the anime, and this episode cemented that. She even crossed Toji-levels of intensity, which is wild. Her character growth and sheer determination make her a standout.

Overall, despite the animation hiccup, the episode delivered on Maki's character arc and her badassery. I would rate this episode a 7/10 overall

「全部壊して、全部だからね、お姉ちゃん」MAIIII NOOOOOOOOOOOOO REST IN PIECE. I LOVE YOU SO MUCH.

To be completely honest, this is one of my top 3 favorite episodes in JJK. Even though I'll say that overall, the direction of this episode isn't the best for Mr. Gosso, there aren't many episodes with this level of direction. From the beginning to the end, it's pure cinema non-stop. The symbolism, cinematography, placement of monologues/dialogues, EVERYTHING is spot on.

Even though I'll say that the pacing of this episode feels fast, that's only for the setup of Maki's awakening. As I said above, this isn't the best-directed episode or even the best JJK episode, as many people say that Gosso can't direct action anime (although I would say you're wrong). It's because he handled JJK S3 that it's clear that Gosso is starting to show his talent in action anime.

Sure, you could say that the action direction isn't very easy to read, but what Gosso does, many others cannot. Hopefully, with the JJK anime, Gosso can learn a lot from JJK and be able to direct action anime that is more stunning than ever imagined.

From what I saw in this episode, Gosso gave all the staff the freedom to do whatever they wanted for each scene, and the creativity really stood out, especially in this episode. Many people felt that the music placement was a bit off, and I agree with that, but again, music is subjective in the end. It would have been so much better if the music in that sequence was more serious and dark than LALALALA. (Maybe they really wanted to fully reference Kill Bill, huh?)

I'm sure my goat Shouta Goshozono hasn't unleashed his full potential in these four episodes of Season 3. I'm afraid the upcoming episodes might surpass all limits. PRAISE THE GOSSO.

I AM GLAD to be alive to witness such a cinematic masterpiece. Damn, MAKI literally fucked the shit up for everyone.
She is one of the best-written female characters (although she is not portrayed as the main character, but I will, hands down, from now on, consider her the most savvy and badass character in JJK). 28 minutes WORTH IT.

MAPPPPPPA cooked the shit so well that, for instance, I thought I was watching Chainsawman Reze's arc fight sequence. TOO DAMN GOOD. Felt sad for Mai (she got her redemption)

MAKI. MAKI. MAKI. MAKI.

Wow I....felt absolutely nothing watching that lol. Zero emotional investment into what was happening on screen, Maki slaughtering a bunch of no name fodder Zenin clan members (which included a straight up rip off of Kill Bill) had no weight to it, it just happens but you don't feel any of it. The song choice was also strange and felt out of place. Oh and Mai died.....alright lmao. Like was suppose to be sad about this nothing burger of a character dying? Like she serve no purpose other than to die and become a literal plot device for Maki. The Naoya fight was fine visually but again zero investment into the fight itself, they obviously want you to hate Naoya but I can't really hate him because he like most JJK characters are so shallow from a writing perspective I just don't care about them enough TO hate him. Like yeah I recognize he's a misogynist prick but when Maki beat him I felt nothing (common theme here) because they basically gave us nothing in terms of history between the two outside a quick glimpse of Naoya bulling her. Just not good enough for me to invested sorry. They also extended the length of this episode by a few minutes compared to a normal episode and yet the pacing still felt too quick which is impressive. Overall the only worthwhile thing that came out of it was Maki's stereotypical shonen powerboost she gets which turns her into Toji 2.0 basically out of nowhere, which was ridiculous and unearned if you ask me. She basically go from being hopelessly weak and getting low diffed by her dad to no-diffing him as soon as she unlocks her power. Just a very poor attempt by Gege to keep Maki relevant and not useless like every other female character in the story.

Edit: Oh yeah they also butchered a couple of great panels from the manga including this one:

This is probably where JJK peaked in the manga for the last time until the the final arc. Beautiful direction, nice Kill Bill inspiration and most of all they did justice to Maki. I remember, when this chapter was released. It was chapter 150 I think, and the end of May of 2021? The panel where Maki said, "Mai, I will get started." It was at that moment she became my favorite character of the series. I had been waiting for this patiently for 4 years now. Just slight nitpick, wish the colors were a bit more brighter in some sequences.

This was definitely the best episode so far.
This part of Makis story was always my favourite (and probably everyones fav). The delivery was good.
And i got teary eyes for Mai, though i didn’t feel as bad as when i read the manga.( maybe because the pacing was too fast)

The animation was good. Compared to previous episodes it was muuuchhhh better.
60% of the time i was like: woahhhhh dayuuuum insaneeeee
20% i was like: WTF is that shit? Why is she sliding like that, pfffffft ahahaha that looks stupid af
And the rest of time i was like: WOAH too fast

But the story and the delivery of these chapters was so good that i can ignore the animation flaws and give this episode 9/10

Tbh, this felt like the point in the series where it genuinely seemed like the only direction left was upward .. except that was a short lived hope. But yeah, will vent about that another day, as tbh, you know shit was about to hit the fan when they straight up skipped the opening and went to Maki solo-ing her entire clan. Never liked Mai, as I mean, this story intentionally wanted us to feel that way towards her, but yeah, when you see what she did for Maki here.. which helped in many ways in the long run, you just can’t hate her anymore.

Chef kiss to the OST and the superb direction this episode had. The choice to go black and white when Maki basically turned into a beyblade, and killed the NPCs as easily as it is to breathe, you just know this was a walk in the park for her. Knew they had plans with this episode but yeah, they really went a notch above. You could genuinely say that this episode barely felt like the same series anymore. When you look back at how action sequences have been handled up to this point, what we got here feels deliberately singular… like it was supposed to be for this moment and this moment alone.

Has to be the most monumental episode of this series, not just for what we witnessed from an animation standpoint, but for Maki as a character too. Hard to beat this part.

That moment in the beginning when he mentions bullying her was just him with his foot on her in the manga panel, but it’s also implied in dialogue that he 🍇’d her, so maybe they were trying to imply that but I’m not sure.

If the last episode was no action, then this episode was all action.

They definitely did the Zenin massacre justice.

Naoya got punched hard by Maki but no he didn't die there he gets stabbed in the back by Maki and Mai's mom lol.

RIP Mai but with her dead taking away all of Maki's CE Maki has become a demon like Toji with no CE. The Kukuru or the Hei doesn't fucking matter. Naoya lol he really thought he was different. Maki just awakening absolutely destroyed them. Toji could've destroyed them anytime he wanted. Like Ranta said the Zenin clan only exists because of Toji's whims.

Fuck Naoya Fuck Ogi Fuck the Zenin clan was basically this episode.

Mappa hard flexing, i'm glad this clan is no more especially blondy, for what Mai gave to her sister i'm guessing it's simply cursed energy vision which was the thing she lacked while having perfected physical strength,

Anyhow arc has a lot of build up but i don't mind, i'm guessing part 2 will be where all the major plot shows up

RIP Mai, i kinda forgot who you were for a sec but you were pretty cool in the end.

@Kaneki402 You're confusing the characters, and what fans are speculating is more likely a misunderstanding of what he said. Naoya is an asshole, but I think this scene is about something else. He's just teasing Maki about Mai's death.

It's impressive how every style of animation production technique and skilled artist in Japan and around the world conspired to make the most artful, stylish episode of anime of the decade. About a character who's entire deal I kind of forgot all the important details of all the way back 4 years ago lol.

I'm glad she turned in JJK Goku though. I think that's what happened?

@Bongoblaster Nope the manga isn't this fast paced at all , I don't understand how everyone is praising this episode so much when it felt like they were skipping to scene after scene without any meaningful transition at all. If I didn't read the manga already I wouldn't know what was going on in this episode at all

Absolute cinema.

If I had to find fault with it, I think that the OST of the fight against the Kukuru unit doesn't match the tension of the moment, but that's just my opinion, it doesn't have to be true, that would be the only thing to point out perhaps.

The episode is sublime, one of the best moments in the manga, if not the best, and it has been incredibly well directed and faithful, 10/10.

@TrivialPawn96 I think the reasoning of Maki getting this insane of a powerup is explained better in the manga , as you said this episode felt way too fast paced which a viewer that has no knowledge about the source material wouldn't quite understand what was going on. Maki's powerup works like this : Maki , same as Toji , Has heavenly restriction which is a binding vow that happens at birth.Heavenly Restriction means that in exchange for having incredibly low or non existant cursed energy , you get inhuman phsyical abilities ( Like Toji's ). As explained in the episode twins in the Jujutsu world act as a single individual ; so because Mai is alive and has atleast a normal amount of cursed energy , The binding vow of heavenly restriction on Maki's body doesn't work since it needs a tradeoff ( no cursed energy ) When Mai dies , the "twins" cursed energy also becomes zero hence it activates the heavenly restriction . It's not an out of nowhere asspull power up it actually makes quite sense but it was TERRRIBLY explained in the episode. But every other point you made I completely agree , they butchered all of toji throwbacks and the scenes didn't seem to connect well with each other.
