It was cool learning about Hero of the South in this one, he seemed like an epic fella, knew he was going to die but did it anyway since he knew it would pave the way for Himmel to finish the job, nothing but respect for this guy, I’m sure his final battle was legendary too, we only got a glimpse of it but what a 1v8 that probably was. I hope this isn’t the last we see of him, I mean we’ve seen plenty of Himmel and he’s been dead for a while now so there’s a chance lol, maybe if the Seven Sages ever come up again or something. Also, there was a really quick flash of Frieren before a much bigger person during one scene, I’m curious about that but it’s probably something far off if I had to guess, cool moment tho.

And the second half of the episode was dedicated to hunting down an heirloom sword of Graf Dach’s family, which is the same family that Frieren recovered the sword for back when she was still with Himmel’s party, nothing like a demon hunting trip to get the nostalgia flowing lol. And yeah I didn’t buy for a second that was a real priest, her timing just seemed too convenient, and Frieren sniffed her out expertly too with the idea that she gets people when they close their eyes to pray, as well as the fake burials, she was a dastardly demon for sure so I’m glad she was dealt with accordingly, everyone played their roles greatly in the fight, the art and animation was sick too. And as a reward for all of that, Frieren can now turn red apples into green apples, might be a little useless but I think it could be useful if you happen to want a green apple but only have red, that and the possibly intentional reference to Mrs. GREEN APPLE who’s doing the OP is cool too lol.

Pretty nice that The Hero of the South was hyping up Himmel before he was even born. Talk about pre-glazing. Well-deserved though. And yet another silly spell added to Frieren's collection. Are green apples worth more or what?
I recall from season 1 that she prefers tart grapes to sweet ones, and has a spell for that as well. So I guess its basically the same thing with the apples.

When it comes to spells and grimoires Frieren is your typical otaku XD
Though the demons keep coming for the sword there is an advantage in knowing demons will come for the sword. After all the Graf has done a decent job of holding onto the sword if it's only been stolen twice in three generations.

It's cool to see other heroes that were around besides Frieren and her group such as the one introduced in this episode and Kraft from S1.

Regarding the rewards that Frieren received, they remind me of the shorts that aired towards the end of S1 until around September 2025 in that they aren't really useful but moreso whimsical/gag-type. They really should ask for some money too, or at least free room & meals, considering that they couldn't afford to eat out.

Fern: "Wow there are a lot of statues of Himmel aren't there?"
Me: "Well, it worked for Kim Jong-Un..."

But it's actually a different hero statue this time, of some generic looking medieval guy with a twirl-able mustache, so the episode immediately launches into a flashback and I swear- the entire first 15 minutes of the whole episode was just a massive exposition dump about this unnamed Hero of the South who we'll never see again and my God was it boring. I had high hopes for this season I really did.
So then they go to generic looking village and get invited to generic looking castle where another bland guy says he has a job for the adventurers to go get his family's magic sword from the Sword Demon. Was this written by a 5 year old?

They go searching and come to a ruined village and there's a woman there hiding by a tree.
Me: "It's the demon"
Demon: "Oh I'm a priest visiting the ruins to pray.."
Fern: "Oh look she's a priest" ... Fucking really? First Class mage and gullible as a dog. How did Fern not sense her mana? Demons don't hide it remember! Because they like to flaunt their power- I remember this from S1 because I actually watched it... oh but that's okay nobody noticed
Woman says she's praying, Frieren points her staff at her "Nuh uh you're demon chick"
Me: "Yep told ya so"
They fight in what was the only entertaining 3 minutes of the episode, then take the sword back to generic castle to present to generic gentleman dude.
Yawn.
2/5 way too much walking and talking, unnecessary exposition on an irrelevant character, action over before it starts, pretentious closer again.

Key event...Huge amount of broad plot would build around this fight...but yeah, for some random Joe it is not important. Whatever
.
Dude. Demons can hide mana for steals purpose. Priest CAN use mana. They are basicly different branch of mages. So even if she show her mana - so what?

Souso No Frieren Episode 2 Season 2
"Hero from the South" In this episode, we're introduced to the hero from the South, who has been mentioned since season 1. It turns out that before Himmel, he also tried to recruit Frieren, but that's just the way it is, haha.
As always, a lighthearted episode, with a bit of battle spice and not forgetting Stark's silliness, haha.

and it's just exposition with Frieren explaining but before they actually show the flashback more with Himmel, this time more exposition less flashback

Great ep

Hero of the South was pretty cool even if he was here for a few minutes.

That horse ugly asl, haha.

Nah, we got the Frieren looking up meme from twitter. That's tuff

Graf's family literally got the weakest security ever, lol.

The trio vs the sword demon was great to see. Frieren never misses in the action department.

I will never understand Frieren's love for useless spells.

This ep adapted ch 63-64.

Knowing that you are the strongest humanity has to offer, and that even if you battle against the 7 sages at the same time and defeat the strongest of them, you will still die, and you will still become just a footnote compared to someone else who will come later in the story... And yet you still accept a mission like that: if that's not a hero to you, your definitions need updating.

Friren Fridays bringing little tears to my eyes as always <3
@Rafael2AMerlo It reminds me of Dr. Strange being able to see the path that gets him to the goal, even knowing that not everyone will make it.

My hot take is these types of stories in a show like Frieren is the best ones. We get mini subplots and detours which you may think is a meaningless side quest, but it’s what makes the show great. We aren’t focusing on the main goal Frieren is looking for (important but not the main focus), but it’s the process. That’s my problem with the exam arc, it didn’t felt like a Frieren story that I expected unlike the first half of season 1. Not saying it’s a bad arc, I liked it overall, it’s just stories like this is what makes Frieren amazing.
@DJLEGEND Either you're telling a story or you're keeping to a particular segment. People that want only one thing are boring people indeed.

The episode was great, but I still don't know if introducing the "Magic Nullifying Crystal" was a good idea. The demon in this episode is a warrior, so if she had that Crystal, then the heroes would be fucked and would have died like 10 times in this episode.

And the Hero of the South is goated, that dude accepted his fate like a champ and didn't complain about it. He won't go down without taking at least 3 of those top demons out.

This was a fairly average Frieren episode, which makes it in the 10% of all anime episodes in general lol.

I love the slower, slice of life Frieren moments and stories. To me that's the real appeal of the show, not the battles or action sequences. The slower moments of how simple acts of kindness can change the world, or at the very least someone's life, of looking back on the past and learning from it, of the quieter, more real interactions between the characters. And to be fair, for those who care about them, we did get a nice battle sequence too.

Anyway, the usual absurdly high quality animation and art, amazing VA and music, just top notch stuff.

This is a SoL series at its core.
@animefanftw123 nah S1 has good pacing bro, constant progress and narrative focus albeit slow, it exist, this season it's back to back SoL episode without no narrative focus, back in S1 they'd slap at least one of these SoL episode in-between arcs, now it's gonna be episodic which is I'm not a fan of

I really appreciate how much the staff working on this anime expand the source material of the manga, they take an already amazing story and elevate it with brilliant direction, animation, art, music, and more. Another thing I wanna mention that a lot of people will probably miss is that the nicely animated puppet show about the hero of the south this episode was actually made by none other than Keiichiro Saito himself, who was the director of the first season! It's really great to see Saito being actively involved in the production of season 2 even after taking a step back from his role as director.

Also, this shot just caught me off guard 😭

I thought i wouldnt tear up but damn i was proven wrong again.

The starting story with the Hero of the south was beautiful and meloncholic. For someone to know their fate and also the fact their efforts might be in vain but still choosing to accept it & face it head on is a different type of mindset. Its so rare and i have so much respect for that. Humanitys strongest indeed.
But his efforts werent in vain as he accompilished so much including annihilating the demon armys frontlines and especially defeating 3 of the 5 Sages. (Rip Aura you will not be missed).

On top of that he also predicted the fated meeting of himmel and frierent & how much it would affect frieren as someone whos life span is beyond a humans. Its so profound.

Truly paved the way for them in all manner.

What a Goat. Its so nice seeing other heroes been given their deserved story and limelight.

Anyways 2nd half had some action with the party going on finding a sword quest. They find the demon whol almost tricked stark and fern but our experienced elf baba was quick enough to notice.
Interesting line from the sword demon "i had to eat to survive"

Also its good to see that fern has still much to learn as the demon overwhelmed her and broke her defenses easily with stark having to intervene. Frieren finally managed to wipe her out with a little himmel flashback.

The sword is returned and frieren gives a little demon pep talk on how the demons use different ways to get what they want including using greed of humans and also their kindness. Hence why frieren protected fern during the mission cause she was gonna pray for the dead people and thus fall into the demons hands like the others.
Its interesting seeing its not just mindless demon slaughter but also understanding their nature, something which has been recurring from season with flamme teaching it to freiren and now freiren parting it to stark and fern. Good stuff.

Another great episode in the bag.

Really enjoyed this [essentially anime-original]* chapter which foreshadows a later sub-story.

But the CG animation is grating on me. The art and animation feel like I'm watching someone play through a game. I'm reminded of Hi-Score Girl at times but it had the excuse of being about gaming so it was sort of thematically appropriate.

*Yeah, this is bollocks. I basically forgot a chapter from the manga.

@therealnagora

? There was nothing "anime original" about this episode. It was a nearly 1:1 adaption of chapter 63 and 64 of the manga.
Pretty much panel for panel.
