Did Hermes call Kino a guy, was it figure of speech or mistranslation, didn't hear it correctly and don't know if my small knowledge could've helped.

It was a mistranslation. Kino is of non-binary gender. (Refer to 25 Great LGBT Anime Characters: Beyond Boys Love, which provides further background on Kino. Kino is 10th on the list.) It should hopefully become clearer in the coming episodes that Kino considers themself simply "Kino", neither "he" nor "she".

Other than that, it was a beautiful episode, and I'm really looking forward to more! It feels sort of like Natsume Yuujincho plus Mushishi plus something else I can't place.

Kino no Tabi 2017 Anime Episode Titles Announced

Anyways, as an updated LN reader, I'm afraid I'll have to confirm some suspicions that this will have two or three "shallow" stories in it (if we define "shallow" as being more narrative-focused than allegorical or symbolic). And indeed, this season is going to have several episodes with more action/blood/"shock factor" stuff compared to the 2003 version. To be fair though, they won't be adapting the goriest stories in the entire series (though I wanted to see one of those chapters, it's a good decision, IMO).

Hermes sure stood out a lot this episode (I mean plenty of comments are about CG Hermes, talking Hermes, Hermes' voice actor, and Hermes referring to Kino as a "he".)

This anime is bringing back my memories. Tbh, I still can hear clearly the opening song in my mind just like I heard from over the last decade.

Oh yeah, Really miss out the old version and the English dubbed voice of Hermes. Thanks Animax channel for the memories and thanks once more for broadcasting the current version in your channel.
I'm super happy 😊

4/5.

In "Kino" all countries are small city states.

Personally i thought episode 1 started off strongly, but the horrible CGI quickly threw me off. They also seemed to have made Kino less of a bad-ass. Some forced exposition as well which I did not like. Overall the art was pretty cheap but not completely unexpected for a modern anime...

I'm happy that Kino and Hermes don't sound vastly different from the 2003 anime.

Also they're gonna have to make Colosseum a realllllly good episode to not mess up.

The OP and ED were pretty decent.

So, this is not a remake, but is this a continuation of the original anime?
I've never read the manga, so I don't know the whole story.
I thought it was a very good start, every technical aspect is great, much better than the original one.
Possibly my favourite of this year.

Interestingly: I was completely turned off during the first few minutes (the camp fire talk) and went on to watch konoha kitan. Coming back after that, the rest of the episode made up for it. The post-episode campfire talk felt fine though. Must be because now I know the characters? The first minutes felt like it was trying to be edgy or sth. And for some reason this reminds me a lot Casshern Sins (idk why).

Anyhow, gonna continue to watch this :) Might jump into the older series sometime.

In another thread I said this about the reboot.

thebusofdoom said:
So it's already been confirmed elsewhere that this series is a reboot and not a sequel. The original series had a distinct style to it, but this reboot looks like any generic anime being released these days. I'm still going to watch this series but I'm approaching it with my skepticism hat on, as you need more than a new art style to bring it on par with the original. Otherwise there's no point in this reboot, unless it gets a second season down the track with new content.

Well the good news is that I'm taking my skepticism hat off as it looks like this reboot is adapting some new content, so now it should stand alone from the 2003 adaptation.

I'm still undecided on the new visual style and I do note it's lost some of the eerie feel that the older adaptation had. However it's still managed to retain the soul of the original. The story is still in line with the general feel of Kino's journey; exploring human nature and society. I expected a town where murder is permitted to be completely lawless and yet to my surprise everything was in perfect order. As Regel said; just because murder isn't prohibited doesn't mean that it's permitted by society. It's like how people take the law into their own hands, and in many places around the world; how 'laws' don't reflect the views of society.

The only flaw I could find with the episode is that the animation itself suffers from framerate issues. I especially noticed it when Kino was pulling up to the strangers outside town; you see Kino & Hermes flicker back and forth. I hope it's just an editing error...
Bondrewd did nothing wrong.

Fun fact: Regel is the German word for "rule/law." Very fitting for this episode. All in all, never seen any of the stuff for the original of this series, but I'm feeling pretty optimistic after that very well executed subversion of expectations. I just hope that I can get used to the CG bike, seeing as to how every time it moved it felt very... jarring ><

I've never watched the original, but I must say the atmosphere and settings are already pretty stellar from Lerche. The CGI Hermes / Kino (sometimes) isn't too distracting either.

All in all, it was a great watch. There was quite a bit of violence, and actually creepy moments of insanity from the country's citizens, so I wouldn't exactly say it was calming, but more... reassuring, and an interesting concept in of itself.
And the ending... (The proper ending, not the epilogue) was cyclical but not-cyclical in nature, and I really liked it.

The whole episode reminded me of a fable, or fairy tale, and I hope that aesthetic continues throughout the series as we learn more about Kino and Hermes themselves.

Quick thoughts: The graphics are generally fine. I like the backgrounds. Sometimes there is a bit too much colourful light but I can live with that. I feel like the atmosphere is inferior to the original but it's not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. I enjoyed that part. The voices the chose for Kino and Hermes are good. I don't like the design for Kino. Way too clean and cute. I really liked the emotionless face Kino had most of the time in the original. She almost always has a cute smile on now. : / Hermes CGI sucks. Why did they have to do that? Even Kino is in CGI at times. Anime has come a long way to cut its roots. It's incredible.

Anyways, I'm looking forward to the new material they are going to adapt. It will probably be fun to compare old and new episodes as well.

Thanks for the post, I hadn't seen the episode list yet. Looking through it, and I'm not too surprised by the selection. A good mix of action, narrative, and a dash of the philosophical. Feel like they're trying to appeal to a wider audience while still holding onto the niche intrigue behind Kino. It's an admirable effort, only time will tell if they can pull it off. Additionally, I totally get what you mean about wanting some of the gorier stories, while recognizing it probably isn't the best move. I really wanted to see Land of Two People, but I don't think that would translate all that well into anime.

All in all, I was very pleased with the first episode. I wish they weren't so front-loaded with Kino talking about the central point of the series, but other than that, I've got no complaints. At this point, I'm mostly interested in how they plan on fitting coliseum into one episode. The 2003 adaptation's weak point was arguably that arc so this could be a good gauge for the capability of the team behind this.

Very solid start for the show. Artistically, it's a step up from the original 2003 anime. The animation is sharper and more detailed. The 3D is jarring on first sight, but you adjust to it eventually. Kino no Tabi (2003) was one of my favorite anime when I started watching anime again in 2014 after a long break. This reboot was as compelling as I'd expected, but it didn't have as strong of an impact as the original did, likely because I knew what to expect. But that's just a nitpick. It's not bad at all.

Am I the only one who was completely shattered when Kino finally gave out that plain answer to the question that has plagued her all this time?

"Why do you travel?"

Jesus Christ after all this time ... Then again, I'm not even sure what the hell else I should expect as an answer.

The new Animation and CGI don't bother me too much, super scrawny kino without a trench coat isn't all that big a deal.

However I was actually bothered thinking about the delivery of the show. It seems like all the answers and ideas that are being conveyed are presented extremely simplisticly.

In the first episode I saw the ending a mile away, it wasn't a bad ending, it just felt like it wasn't really "Kino".

I'm pretty certain that this is the exact same dialogue in episode 12 in the original 2003 version (at the beginning and prior to the Peaceful Land's story). So this is literally just a rehash.

As a fan of 2003's Kino's Journey, I like this new version. Good first episode, a nice introduction to what you should expect from Kino's Journey going forward. The CG wasn't off-putting at all for me, which was one of my biggest concern when I saw the trailer. I doubt it'll be as good as the original, but so far I'm impressed with this new version and look forward to seeing more.

Alright. I'm convinced. That was some great stuff. I loved the parallel they constructed between Kino's ability to stop whenever she wants to and the people's ability to kill whenever they want to. It's because they can do it anytime they wanted to that they don't.

I don't know how I feel about this new series. But that was a strong first episode. I like the animation style. And Kino's more detailed character model in this series. I like CG Hermes I think they made it work well. And Aoi Yuki is actually pretty damn great as Kino. Part of me was worried (unfairly) she'd be doing one of her hyper girl type roles. A la Futaba in Persona 5. But she plays the role faithfully. And gives the character of Kino all the dignity and cool she had in the first series.

I love the Town too. Yet another twist on a Purge Town. But this was more of what I wanted in the original series Purge type episode. With the warring towns. It's more of what I wanted in the original series in general. With a well realized episodic setting. And little twists and turns within its small and unassuming narrative. The old man being the famous bandit was a nice little turn at the end.

If I have a complaint. It's that I don't want it. To go over all this back story and context. For the benefit of new viewers. I know who Kino is and why they travel like they do. Please don't try to awkwardly fit character building exposition into this. Oh well. Might as well get used to it. Next episode's the Coliseum. Looks like they'll be redoing at least some of the stories the 03 series covered. The Coliseum one should be cool with this fancy new animation.

Hmmm so the first country he travels to is the hybrid between Attack on Titan, and a generic old American western movie.

Interesting to see how the town is notorious for allowing murder, but then actually experiencing the town life shows how all of those preconceived notions actually are. Just because mixer isn't prohibited doesn't mean it's permitted. It's a polite, law abiding town filled with kind people...who all happen to be carrying in case outsiders try to take advantage of their law.

Though what kind of threw me off is that every time the people there actually mentioned killing someone, they all had like this smiling look on their faces. Like they enjoy it even though they don't do it often.

The art seems kind of unusual to me. Not that it's bad or anything, but like even in the scenes where it's not CGI, it still kind of looks CGI? Maybe I'm the only one who sees it.

SO. FRIGGIN. HYPED !!!!

The animation and art is just simply gorgeous. It's great that they took another direction, but I feel that while the background and characters look more realistic and clean; it lost it's storybook feel in the process as well as

So cool that they showed that classic kino interaction of feel warm and cosy and the next second feeling a sense of creepiness and dread. A what a constrast to how a menacing 'dead eyes' crowd was in a 'chaotic-good' scenario instead of a 'chaotic-evil' that we see often in the older series. And all those expert references with Kino's chats with Hermes. I can tell they were doing it for the fans.

Anyone else feel a dose of the United States gun philosophy when they saw this episode?

Osts unique & carefully placed like 03', which I just saw few weeks ago.
Both prologue & epilogue syllogism quite interesting, overall same pondering wandering vibe.
I disliked 03 color palette, so the lush greens here make me happier than I should.
Kino sounds similar, still looks like boy in many frames, but seems much taller & skinny. Hermes different, tho 03's sounded annoying so this Hermes is fine.
The killer ojiisan's look detailed & hot lol.
Murderers-(bait) country, fun but rather idealistic, like asking all Texans to band together for tea time.
Hermes & a few bits were funny. Wonder if the journey this time'll be more lighthearted or stay melancholic.

That's pretty neat, I didn't know that little detail. I thought she fit also especially since she's done a lot of roles, kinda like how Megumi Hayashibara voiced Paprika (women that have been a multitude of characters voiceacting characters that can meld into everybody, if that uh makes sense)

YES! THIS IS IT! I watched the first series 10 years ago and have been longing for more of Kino's travels since. Really a spectacular entry episode. The atmosphere was very nostalgic to the first series, yet it also feels very fresh and renewed by the current times. Even though there are different seiyuu for Kino and Hermes, the manner in which they speak is still very similar to before.

This scenario was very fascinating. It goes into that notion of morality vs legality. While killing isn't prohibited by law, it is not permitted by the people living there. When a community embraces the same morals, there usually is no need for laws. Laws are meant as deterrents precisely due to a lack of moral foundation within a society.

The contrast between the two travelers hoping to live there also adds another interesting insight. The first guy wanted to kill, despite having no experience, while the other guy wanted to live in peace precisely because he'd seen so much death.

Had to go back when I realized Kino was legit talking to her motorrad.

Interesting concept, I quite like how this show gives vibes of an adventure, as she is traveling but has the laid-back atmosphere of a slice of life. The simplicity honestly stands out a lot and although there is not much of a plot that I can see in this remake, or series at last at this point, the potential honestly comes from I think the characters and the observation of these countries.

Definitely unlike anything I have watched so far, will keep on watching it!

It was a 2nd amendment utopia. Extremely limited government, rural society, and the 'weak' (Kino is counts as 'weak' in this comparison, because she didn't draw) are protected because others can and will stand up against agressors. Apart from the Cowboy theme, I think the wall was a nice hint too =P

Anyway, I thought it was interesting how a Japanese production would open their series with such a serious and frankly quite positive take on this, and show how it could actually work.
