I've tried to watch this show multiple times, but I never make it past episode 2 because I'm so bored. My question is simple: how many episodes does it take for this show to become good?

episode 7 or 8, ig I found the show pretty mid before that

The first 4 episodes aired together and if you really want an informed decision you should probably watch that much. That said - if after the first two you aren’t liking it you should probably drop it.

I doubt you will suddenly start liking it. Not all shows are for everyone. Maybe try it again some years from now.

I’m not sure I would have appreciated this show when I was in my 20s.

Now that I am an old fart and have lost or left behind a lot of people along the way it hits pretty hard - at least it did for me.

It varies from person to person, but maybe it might stop being boring for you by episode 6, since by then the main cast has been fully introduced.

For everyone saying this is ragebait, here is the real ragebait:

Solo Leveling unironically deserved Anime of the Year.
@immortal142 Not ragebait if it probably deserved it. I mean, only two of the nominees were better and SL had far more impact on the general audience than both.

Frieren is tagged as "shounen" even though it doesn't even act like one.
If you are bored with, it's fine.
You are just not mature enough for it, it is as simple as that.
Try again when you get significantly older and smarter.
@Alexzsandros You don't require high level intelligence to watch Frieren tho. It has a basic plot. This isn't Steins Gate.

Steins Gate does not require high level intelligence to watch either, otherwise it wouldn't be this popular. At its core, Steins Gate is actually a harem anime with a sci-fi setting after all.

I had the same issue. Usually, just by watching the first episode I get a clear taste of whether I'm gonna like something or not. At most, usually by episode 3 it gets clearer.

For Frieren it took me like 6-7 episodes. Initially I watched until 5 episodes and dropped it out of sheer boredom. After like 6 months I picked it up again and I began to enjoy it a little more, gradually.
By episode 6 a new main character is introduced and changed a bit the dynamics and that pretty much saved the show for me. For whatever reason, the plot is slow and takes a lot of time to unfold some of its more interesting qualities.

So, if you wanna see what the big fuzz is about, I recommend to give it time and see if Stark's introduction in the story makes it better for you.

Overall, I think Frieren is like 8/10 at best. There is potential for a good story here, but I think the pacing and the way the story is told isn't ideal to showcase its strength.

@JoeChip Well, I guess you're right on that part, but I disagree with it being a harem anime.

@The_Spectre_01

I obviously don't mean it's literally a harem anime but it's based on a harem construct, it is more obvious on VN where you can choose different routes and end up with different girls.

Wow, this is still going? Anyways, I'm off to watch more isekai trash. If a show doesn't have an overpowered MC being followed by a gaggle of girls dropping panties everywhere they go. I'm not interested.

It's why I own Steins;Gate on almost every system it's available, and I rewatch & replay Higurashi all the time. So many panties dropped, and without those panties dropping my brain loses interest almost immediately.

Can't forget the best isekai of all time, Digimon Adventure.

Bait or not, I'm definitely feeling this even at ep 15. Only episodes I enjoyed were the first (which is kinda cheating since it's the one that requires having a little plot to set things up) and episode 11, where I felt the whole "reflection of the battle aftermath" was solidly handled (the battle itself was boring as hell).

I don't think it's necessary because it's a Slice of Life. A lot of tv shows I like have SOL elements, like being more character than plot-focused. I think the main reason is how anime as a medium tries to be entertaining with this genre, and why in the end I'm not an anime fan anymore.

To try to explain, SOL doesn't have dramatic conflicts or a strong plot, so it tries to be entertaining with everyday life stuff. So characters have to have actual charisma, hobbies must be interesting to watch, and it has to know how to reinvent itself to not stagnate. However, most anime is averse to organic everyday stuff, so it tries to appeal to what 12-15y gets obsessed with.

It throws cute girls and makes everything they do appeal to that demographic (Literally fanservice, just not sexual). In this case, it makes the main character OP and all fights are about enemies thinking they have already won, but losing at the end, so the MC can aura farm. It has the same fantasy setting I'm tired of seeing, but since that demographic loves LOTR and D&D they'll eat it up. Having outstanding production quality with its animation to appeal to art fans that get entertained just by knowing how impressive it looks or what technique they used, rather than improving the plot in any way. Have an OST that baits people that don't pay attention to making it look like the show has any emotional quality. And definitely don't reinvent itself regarding the whole "Flashback that showed Himmel had romantic intentions for Frieren", showing thousands of flashbacks saying the same thing.

Anyway, I can still see myself enjoying it afterward if it tones down all this stuff and actually tries to be entertaining. But as of right now, not only do I think it is mediocre at best, the fact that 83% of people rated this at least a 9/10 is very telling of how anime fans are just kids in adult bodies, and how they will shape the industry to reflect their immaturity rather than push the medium to a respectable place

Frieren is not a slice of life anime, it's a fantasy drama with slice of life elements, not the same thing.
