I feel like if this was a full length film or even a 12-13 episode series, this could be something truly spectacular, (Kinda like how Your Name was) but I liked the twist with the two MC's and I understood and could relate to both of their motivations behind why they both chose to go to the other persons' world

Visually it was great and I dug the OST and the VA as well.

not much happened , i know its a short film but pace was slow and not really an interesting story animation was okay, music was best part. could have done better to make the story more interesting and could also please change the voice actor for the train(noises of the presenter) was bad. the main character of the guy was pretty generic with a generic looking face as well. i am being little harsh i like gigguk but all and all it was okay.

While this story is rushed and sometimes a little hard to follow, the fact that people expect it to be perfect and not judge it as an indie, but as if it were created by a famous anime writer, is mind-blowing. Yes, it's not perfect but for being the first project ever, and creating it with 0 experience writing an anime, this came better than some fully funded projects and not rushing a story into an 18-minute short film, but instead a whole season. Of course, the story will seem like it came out sloppy. Some of the reviewers are clearly just haters, and I dare them to spend the time and money to make something better if they think it's so easy. I looked into it as I have a few great stories I think would make great anime, but the cost of it is way out of my league, and the fact that this was self-funded in itself deserves more love than some of the people here are giving it. If Garnt had an actual full budget and didn't have to shorten the story to just product it. People don't seem to understand the cost, the time it takes to make, etc. I bet a lot of the concerns people brought up would have been non-existent. One I read was that they saw an anime give more story in one episode. Well, of course, as they had the funding to make a whole episode. This only had a budget to get 18 minutes for a larger story. It was able to get the point across and shows what it could be, which can now show the potential for growth, etc. Hopefully, it can get picked up and backed as I think there is something here and just need more time, budget, and focus. Anyone who makes anime on their own with support, of course, has my respect, and I can't wait to see what is next.

Not bad but not great either. It definitely needed some more duration time for the message it wanted to convey. I think if we were to see a couple more minutes after they encountered with that flashback scene and showed more of family dynamics and bonding it would have more impact with that crying scene at the end. But I don't know what went behind the production to shorten the duration of the anime.

Anyway good job Garnt.

The animation was great considering it was self-funded. The music was incredible, Kevin really went all out with this.

Story wise, not much. It was simple. Simplicity isn't always bad, but it did lack any real substance. Some parts felt abrupt, and I have watched a couple short films which have done much more in 20 minutes than Baan. Overall I'll give it a 6. Definitely above average, especially since the concept felt pretty original, but forgettable.

As a debut however, it was quite good. Hopefully it can inspire more creators to follow their passion for storytelling.

The moment I got invested it ended.
It's a bit confusing story, because it seems initially was meant to be longer. Luckily the story and timeline become clearer in the end. But Rin's character and her relationships are the things I'm still curious about (she found friends abroad, but the moment they said "come home", she realized it wasn't home she wanted?).
Great art and animation, fantastic music, good direction, but rushed story. Overall it's 8/10 for me, which means I'll probably watch it again and maybe discover something new.

@donslockz Yeah, it is pretty apparent a lot of things got scrapped.

The story, the characters, and the world are seemingly left in the background as the story focuses on one simple aspect: the journey. If you are not invested in that, this is not a movie that can take your heart.

My first impression was ruined by the default English dub, so I got turned off from watching it and ended up spoiling myself reading comments. I could tell flipping to the jp dub it would it have vibed with me more. I think the jp voice for the main girl naturally has that moe element to it that English VAs can't capture.

Really good stuff. Got me a bit teary in some parts. My only complain is some scenes needed to breathe a bit more, but that's completely understandable since this was a self funded project. But it's good to emphasize I still think the themes were delivered so well.

Those are the types of stories I'm missing in anime industry nowadays. Personal stories that are told in a way that trust the audience to get the little details and feels organic. Look Back was something that impacted me because of that, and while this ain't the same level, it is still 18mins of really high quality. Solid 8/10
@BetterTaste I absolutely agree with your take on Look Back. I think what anime these days lack is grounded themes.

@night_owl_296 Well said. Reading some of the comments people some people saying "it's rushed" Obviously! how do you expect to create a story in under 18 mins. not only that but to make a 12 ep anime, the cost would be up to $2 million to $3 million.

I do think It could've benefited from having an hour or more episodes to properly flesh out the story but garnt did as much as he could to make it perfect as possible.

He definitely has my full respect and hearing the behind the scenes in his podcast showed that he worked his ass off this is. Many anime fans don't realise just how hard making an anime or manga is because we're just consuming the media.

Here some examples of short anime using its time better:

Cencoroll is 26 minutes - https://myanimelist.net/anime/3087/Cencoroll

Buki yo Saraba is 25 minutes - https://myanimelist.net/anime/17677/Buki_yo_Saraba

Yoru no Kuni (by the same studio as Baan) is 3 episodes 8 minutes each - https://myanimelist.net/anime/48727/Yoru_no_Kuni

Inaka Isha is 20 minutes - https://myanimelist.net/anime/3326/Inaka_Isha

Shashinkan is 16 minutes - https://myanimelist.net/anime/20671/Shashinkan

Manie-Manie: Meikyuu Monogatari is 3 episodes 16 minutes each and they are not connected, thus can work separately - https://myanimelist.net/anime/1951/Manie-Manie__Meikyuu_Monogatari

Tsumiki no Ie is 12 minutes - https://myanimelist.net/anime/5365/Tsumiki_no_Ie

Rain Town is 9 minutes - https://myanimelist.net/anime/10448/Rain_Town

For me the main problem with Baan is that Gigguk never aimed at short form from the beginning and than after realizing the length he was adamant to tell the whole story, instead of only one interesting segment of it.

Nah. Didn't hit. The theme of longing for one's home is one that I do like, as I have actually experienced that to a significant degree in my own life just as the creator of this anime likely did, but this 18-minute special just wasn't good enough to truly convey the strong emotions associated with that feeling. The characters felt very one-dimensional. We never got to understand WHY exactly they yearn for home, or what makes their home so great outside of a 5-second long scene where they eat dinner. We understood very little of why they left home in the first place too, which is equally as important. Perhaps this was partly because of the short length, but we must evaluate the piece as it is, and I still think they could have done better even with only 18 minutes.

This theme can be very moving if done right. Unfortunately, it wasn't done right here.

What's the difference?

That 18 minutes of screentime managed to tell a whole season worth of story in an almost comprehensible manner. I say almost because those monsters or whatever they were fighting was introduced without any context prior and that confused as to what they were and why they were fighting them in the first place. other than that its a good watch.

Modern isekai that is not harem or rpg horseshit and with actual attempt at delivering a message? Color me surprised.
Music and animation are beautiful, same goes for the scenery and the dragon's design.
The timeline and family tree, though, left me quite confused.

I decided to check this out finally since everyone seems to be talking about it and it is short enough. For something made on one man's budget, the animation quality is decent but that's really where the good part ends. This is like a 6 at best, if I'm being generous.

A big part of that is definitely the limited time it had to tell quite a complex story involving multiple different people/places/time at the same time and if it had even a bit more time...like an hour instead of 17 min (a full season probably would've been too much) then I do feel it would've had a better chance of being more coherent and actually explored the two protagonists a bit more and their experiences essentially trading places but instead we just got a montage of the girl's life in the modern world. But at the end of the day, I believe that part of that is also a bad use of the limited time. The message of the story was clear, but what was the point of the fight scene, or the magical creatures, or the ritual, or even the whole wings/emotion part? They are hardly necessary to deliver the message and seem to just stretch the limited budget and time with extra plot points that are never explained or fleshed out, making them feel pointless. The wing part I can see having just to differentiate them vs the regular inhabitants of earth and to drive home the feeling of isolation for the girl, but there were countless other things you could do to have the two people meet, within a few frames/a couple of seconds that would've just been as effective.

In the end, it felt more like I was watching a recap rather than a story. I understood the message because it was flashed to me in a montage of scenes rather than told in an actual story. I wonder if everyone is scoring based on the fact that it's a small project or based on the YT persona behind it :)

I REALLY wanted to like this but come on, there's nothing there. It's just simply too short for such a complex plot. We hard-skipped both of their life-changing character arcs and the fantasy world aspect. I know there was budget problems and this is just a passion project so I'm not gonna criticize it too heavily but I also can't praise it honestly.
I'm proud of Garnt tho! SO PROUD!!! I can't even put into words how happy I am for him!
With that being said: 3/10
