Maybe I'm wrong, but prior to this I don't JJK ever had an all-timer episode. The closest it's come to a generally accepted GOAT episode is one of the later hidden inventory episodes, the Yuji vs Choso EP or the Sukuna vs Mahoraga EP. The later might claim the title due to it's impact on the internet but it got screwed over by MAPPA's rushed schedule which left it 2/3rds finished. With that said, this is a definitive all timer episode of anime and easily JJK's best episode to date, and from a complete standalone perspective and considering how the general public (myself included) talk about the writing in the later arcs I'm not sure it'll be beaten.

This is an absolute masterclass of animation and stellar direction that you'd only ever see in the most pristine anime or the best anime movies. Personally I'd probably prefer the overall look of the Reze arc over this but there's no point comparing perfection. It's not just that the animation that looks great (sakuga nerds are going to go crazy about this), unlike a lot of so called 'greatest of all time sakuga sequences' spammed throughout ani-twitter it never feels like a rushed or unfinished storyboard. It's incredibly consistent, well-directed, well-animated and has an artistic vision beyond bright lights and flashy particles.

If I had any criticism with it it would probably be that the story could've been more developed throughout the series to make these developments and deaths hit harder. There is a decent amount of exposition dedicated to the parts of the Zenin clan that should've been included somewhere that wasn't 5 seconds before all their deaths. It's kinda funny that we were introduced to 'the Hei' as some powerful force and then the next second they are speed blitzed.

A few gripes aside I don't think it gets in the way of the tragedy of Maki and Mai's relationship, and the consise nature of Maki's slaughter. She arrives, gets mortally wounded and her sister dies, unlocks her true potential, wipes out her misogynistic clan and then leaves. It's also quite fitting that the frame where she arrives is the exact same as when she leaves. As a wise man once said "It's like poetry. It rhymes". This episode was so good it warmed my cold 'professional JJK complainer' heart.

This was probably the last moment in the JJK manga where every reader was in agreement that it was fantastic, so I don't have high hopes for the writing after this. But if MAPPA keeps whatever schedule and production team that produced/created this for the rest of JJK's adaptation, then it'll probably be fantastic from it's production alone. 5/5

Edit: Seems this episode has been rather controversial. Guess it won't be JJK's first all timer episode.

As someone that has disliked this series with a passion (anime and manga), this was definitely the one episode I truly liked from start to finish and consider the best of the franchise. Maki's the one real character I liked and found interesting from the previous couple seasons among everyone, and boy did her story shine a lot in this one-off episode focusing on her return to the Zenin clan. The first half in particular was very strong with her and Mai there in their brief scene after seeing what a POS her father was to both of them, and it resulted in a ridiculous but hilarious showcase of power and strength that Maki gained to take out everyone possible over there at that clan without really breaking a sweat. Deserved too. Mai's sacrifice meant a lot to her and boy did Maki make the most out of it there, even with Naoya getting an extreme humbling there at the end. Direction was great, the music in the first half worked with the tense mood and the second half went full on ridiculous along with Maki's desturction of the sorcerers sent to take her out and that resulting in a river of blood everywhere. As someone that found JJK to just deliver on animation and not on its characters to make me care for what is going on at the screen (besides some parts of Hidden Inventory and the final arc of season 1), this episode actually worked because Maki is such a different character to the others, one that is worth me following I guess. And it paid off. I normally am extremely either critical or bored of this series but this one-off episode was really strong and the adaptation mostly did it justice. There's no way the rest of the manga content, let alone this arc can deliver something I would actually care for in comparison to this episode.

It's extremely difficult to convey how unimpressive and mediocre this directing style feels if you're not sensible to it.

I do not care about endless Yutapon, I am indifferent about changing aspect ratio and having trillion speed lines each and every cut and I especially despise characters being off model for about 99% of shots during the episode. I genuinely feels like JJK has now become an excuse for key animators to do experimental projects under the illusion of animating big shonen fights but if you put this side by side with any fight in season1, it is legit not the same show from any possible metric and I don't know if you can even argue with this.

Offing a bunch of irrelevant side characters that were just introduced aside, I loved Naoya and that first scene of him slowly slamming his leg onto a piano is by far one of the funniest shit I've ever seen in terms of characterization, it's simply perfect. Unfortunately, he jobbed like a bitch barely 3 eps after being introduced and if that's not a waste of character I don't even know what would be, which is pretty in line with JJK to be honest. If basic shock value was a currency, Jujutsu Kaisen would be the richest property alive.

Akutami will never make me care about Maki nor Mai no matter what terminally ill online lesbian fangirls on twitter will say about their supposed (inexistant) depth but ohohoh let's not get too risky I wouldn't risky a ban for spewing truth like that.

Holy fuck. They didn't stand against a "sister's death" feeling. Naoya deserved that. Bro was too cocky.
Clan Zenin is obliterated and only Maki and Megumi are the members. So... what now? Where is the stuff that left the vault? They will find them later?

For now, I'm waiting for Hakari's appearence. Itadori making his way to this club... That will be funny.

See you next week!

I know I will get hate for this, but some criticism on my behalf. But first let me tell you what I liked:

The animation was absolutely perfect and there is nothing to complain. If there is someone who shits on the animation, I will believe they are crazy.
I really also liked the art and colours in the episode.
Also, the OSt as well as the Voice Acting is just beautiful.

Now to my criticism:

The Toji Comparison:
The moment when Ogi realizes the fear he had from Toji back then was not executed that well in my opinion.
It should have been a moment of pure terror for Ogi, and the Manga depicted that very well. However, I think this moment, which should have been a really heavy moment, was just brushed over. (But this is just a nitpick)
I think the Anime should have executed it like the "You are not Toji" moment, with Naoya seeing the past and how scary Toji looked.

The Pacing:
I think the pacing has been really weird this season. It is sometimes really dragged out (Episode 1 and 1st half of Episode 2), or just rushed.
This was one of the rushed ones. I think it would have worked better, if we would had a 1 1/2 episode split for this arc, but that's just my opinion.
It just felt like they rushed the whole arc which is a shame to be honest.

Other than that:
This episode was great and I can't wait for next week. This whole season is gonna be peak!

@Apratim Come on bro, don't be so blind :D

Season 1's photography was terrible, the backgrounds were awful, the episode directing was very mediocre, the storyboards were boring and bad, etc.

Season 1 didn't do anything better than Seasons 2 and 3, I think you should finally understand that Park is a terrible director :)

I really liked the episode, but I have to say that I didn’t like the animations in some parts. Especially during the black-and-white fight, the characters often looked very poorly drawn to me.

For me the animation in episode 2 was a a lot better.

Oh GOD. I don't know what to say. This was tragic yet mesmerizing. Oh, Maki..... you will always be loved by me! (and Mai, of course).

Regardless of everything, I think Mai's love for Maki was truly extraordinary and full of compassion. I was so satisfied watching Naoya get destroyed.

This episode was 28 minutes long but it felt faster than the previous one xD whatever, this is the part I've been waiting for the most, so I'm very grateful.

Oh so it was decided that Maki ≥ Toji all of a sudden. Cool. Thought Toji was made out to be a one-off, really unique character. But apparently you only need one of them Heavenly Restrictions to be at his level, pretty much. I hope I'm missing a lot of info in the story (was a while since I watched the earlier seasons) - because if this is truly the explainer of what happened in this ep... then damn does his cheapen the fuck out of Toji and whatever "aura" he had. Like a shit ton.

Maki this episode basically

What a badass lady.

Rip Mai, she was a great loving sister and gave her everything for maki. The studio did absoloute justice to that scene from the colors to the meloncholic ost. It just fit perfectly for the bonding and love between the two sisters.

I loved this little detail with the toji imagery. that was just chills.

Maki did absoloute justice to mai with that absoloute massacre she ensued after and Naoya just got obiliterated holy shit.

That fight was Cinema, absoloute fcking cinema. Bone crushing i might say.

Also then giving her mother the treatment she deserves and then the mother delivering that Poetic justice to Naoya with knife in the back was just peak.

"Backstabbing women who cant stand three steps back behind a man" huh naoya? Rest not in peace you 24 Frame per second Bozo. Tojis laughing at you from somewhere.

What an episode, pure justice to the manga. Kudos mappa for cooking this hard.

I've never both gotten goosebumps and left feeling just at a loss of words after an episode of anime. This is the pinnacle not just of anime but of a story in general. I was getting the naked and boiling rage of Pyscho Pass, the horror of the Red Wedding and the satisfaction of revenge after from Game of Thrones, or the despair of death loops in Stein's Gate.

I generally didn't like the twins either but seeing her twin sacrifice herself and give her power to make Maki stronger and then just see a visual representation of the rage, the rage of her dad killing her sister, the rage of the family being ostracized, of that trash speed dude I learned to hate in just one movie- everything felt right. The black and white, the pure power of Toji reincarnated, the utter satisfaction and bloodiness of Kill Bill but in peak anime form. It was so violent and yet so peaceful. The world had been made right. The evil, arrogant, and cruel family members ERASED.

I don't think any anime, or story in general can beat this sad unfortunate series of events that led to this satisfying emotional conclusion. Call me vengeful. Call me wrath. Call me Maki.
