Ninety seconds.

Ninety seconds from the first shot of Frieren's wand to the disintegration of the Sword Demon. Ninety seconds, out of a 24-minute show, that could be classified as entertaining.

I've sat...slogged through thirty episodes of this mind-numbingly monotonous dredge patiently waiting for the big crescendo moment when it would finally turn into the big demon-hunting bloodbath that I was promised. And I'm beginning to worry that the day may never come - or, I suppose, it already came to pass 29 years ago. There is no hope to cling onto, no potential for the show's redemption, all I get are those ninety seconds of blissful stimulation. Yet, I must continue to let my skull pour out of my eyes and ears and watch - nay, love these weekly twenty-four minutes of agony, as this was democratically elected as the greatest anime ever by the aging userbase of this old website. Whatever these people see in this show is something I could never understand; do they truly adore hearing quick summaries of battles they'll never get to see? Are you cuckolds? Do you like getting cockblocked by the passage of time? I was going to ask whether you were above or beneath me, but I believe I've obtained the answer.

Thank God this show airs just two days before Hell's Paradise.

The episode was great, but I still don't know if introducing the "Magic Nullifying Crystal" was a good idea. The demon in this episode is a warrior, so if she had that Crystal, then the heroes would be fucked and would have died like 10 times in this episode.

And the Hero of the South is goated, that dude accepted his fate like a champ and didn't complain about it. He won't go down without taking at least 3 of those top demons out.

4 actualy. He took out most dangerous one among demons Shlacht the Omniscient - just imagine what pain in the butt it would be if Demons still had Demon Right Hand Man which is able to predict (and adapt) your every move long before you even come to this thought by yourself

Have you considered just not watching something you clearly do no enjoy?
It really does not matter how popular any given series, book, movie, game and so on is if its not to your personal taste.
Sometimes its better to just accept that and move on. Obsessing over something that is liked by many people but not by yourself
is the most pointless thing ever. Literally a waste of time.

"The Hero of the South... I can’t quite put into words why, but the moment he appeared and the way Frieren spoke of him, I was moved to tears.

He was a man who had foreseen his own demise, yet embraced it with open arms for the sake of a greater future. He promised to clear the path for Himmel, and in the end, Frieren’s party truly fulfilled his dying wish. It was such a profound, soul-stirring connection—truly a perfect episode."

Really enjoyed this [essentially anime-original]* chapter which foreshadows a later sub-story.

But the CG animation is grating on me. The art and animation feel like I'm watching someone play through a game. I'm reminded of Hi-Score Girl at times but it had the excuse of being about gaming so it was sort of thematically appropriate.

*Yeah, this is bollocks. I basically forgot a chapter from the manga.

As an anime only I had no idea this was anime only. Did not feel like a filler at all. Perfectly executed.

Great episode, Hero of the South story was well done. It's really great how they can in a matter of few minutes introduce and send off a character, and still make you feel invested. Music helped a lot too, really talented people work on this show.

This episode annoyed me because I don't know what it wanted to say. There are clear parallels of demons and humans: demon eats humans despite not needing to(humans don't need to eat meat); demons have a cultural tie to this sword(same as noble family); it's just the nature of demons(like humans aren't lying to and killing one another constantly)....but the episode doesn't say anything. It raises these parallels for seemingly no reason. It felt like an empty parable.

Also, Fern being taken aback when Frieren attacks the stranger was a real House MD moment. Fern should be the first person to understand Frieren's actions and enter battle mode. Unless they have/do establish Fern has some clergy bias due to her adoptive father I don't see it.

Its setup for a future story arc. Which we wont see before season 3. But the Frieren author likes to plant those seeds early.

What truly stands out in Season 2 is the atmosphere. There are many silent scenes, simple dialogues, and reflective pauses that quietly hit the viewer. The anime doesn’t force sadness, yet it often leaves you thinking about the past, about people who are gone, and about time that cannot be taken back.

Visually and musically, the quality remains excellent. The animation is smooth, the color palette is soft, and the soundtrack perfectly supports the calm yet melancholic tone without ever being overwhelming.

I guess I'm the only one borderline disappointed by the episode, especially in comparison to the exceptionally high quality of season 1 (or even the previous episode):

- More long and / or wide shots, with minimal animation or significance (thus feeling slow and boring)
- More noticeable lower character design quality at times, possibly because of the above
- Occasionally even the music barely fitting the scenes

To me it seems the direction is lacking (again, in comparison), which is surprising as the first episode was great.

If you want to watch a big demon-hunting bloodbath there's plenty of choice. Do you want some sort of medal for watching 30 episodes of something you don't like? What sort of idiot does that?

Plus: no one was promised a big demon hunting bloodbath. The idea that you were expecting it makes me wonder if you watched any of the previous series given that it starts with the party returning home from the big demon bloodbath which is firmly in the past.

Mod Edit: Removed baiting.

@therealnagora Yup. From the very first episode, it was clear that this is a show that takes its time to breathe. If that's not to someone's taste, then they should watch something else.

PEAK EPISODE. The direction in this anime is excellent. The people working on Frieren are very dedicated and creative. Not to mention Evan Call's soundtrack, which greatly enhances each scene. the puppet scene is one of the best sakuga this year.

Hero of the South. We are not told the real name behind the nickname Hero of the South, but it only takes courage and conviction to make his "name" remembered to this day. I really like this character and it only took one episode for me to put him in my top 5 favorite characters in the entire series.

The history of the battle between the Hero of the South and Schlacht is fascinating. The local community believes that since the Hero of the South’s body was never found after his death, their battle continues to this day. I love his character. I really want to read a spin-off of the entire story about the Hero of the South.

Makes sense, that there were heroes before Himmel who would try to defeat the demon king and I guess the hero of the south was a particular strong one. So he was the first to kill three of the seven sages, then Himmel's party killed two of them and Frieren killed Aura in the first season... which I guess leaves one of them? I kinda thought that Qual was one of them as well, but I guess I remember that wrong. Guess there is still one on the run then.

In the second part we get our first real fight of the new season and the animation was beautiful as always. That sword demon was also quite strong, she would've killed Fern if it wasn't for Stark. I was a bit surprised that Frieren still only used Zoltraak instead of something stronger, given that Fern was actually in danger.

But it's actually a different hero statue this time, of some generic looking medieval guy with a twirl-able mustache, so the episode immediately launches into a flashback and I swear- the entire first 15 minutes of the whole episode was just a massive exposition dump about this unnamed Hero of the South who we'll never see again and my God was it boring.
Key event...Huge amount of broad plot would build around this fight...but yeah, for some random Joe it is not important. Whatever
.
Dude. Demons can hide mana for steals purpose. Priest CAN use mana. They are basicly different branch of mages. So even if she show her mana - so what?

I never said she couldn't hide her mana, I said:

Demons don't hide it... Because they like to flaunt their power-

According to canon as was explained last season, they won't hide their mana. So this episode contradicted canon..... and I have pointed out this series contradicts its own rules roughly once per episode.

Episode 30 stays calm and very Frieren-like. Not flashy, but nice to take in.
The moment where Frieren asks for magic to turn a red apple green seems trivial, but that is exactly the point. Magic is not always about power, sometimes it is just about small habits and quiet memories that matter.

I could be surprised just by this episode, but I’m more impressed by how Frieren keeps making this type of chapters so easily.
The story of the South Hero is amazing—the way they presented it, with flashbacks and the gradual reveal of the importance of this character so far.

In this episode, we keep seeing how Himmel changed Frieren’s life, how Stark and Fern are growing up, how dilemmas appear in seconds, etc etc etc
I know its soon to say this, but i just wish this story could last 10 years.

The music of this show is so damn beautiful. The whole anime is a technical triumph, but wow, the music just helps bring tears to my eyes during scenes like the recounting of the saga of the Hero of the South and his pivotal relationship to Frieren.

Personally, I don't know how others find this show "boring". It's always had this great mix for me of "zen-like" travels with pensive, lovely character reflection and edge-of-your-seat action sequences and plot points.

Well, it's pretty good. It was obvious there would be more people who fought on different fronts at the time, but I was surprised they focused on one of them and made it so important.

But more questions arise: Why could he see the future? Knowing he would die, didn't he try to find another way, or if the future is already set, can't it be changed?

Regarding the fight against the demon who stole the sword: Why does it keep getting stolen? Perhaps they'll never explain it, and it would be a shame if they didn't.

@Danpmss Better the autor being well in her health, then anything. Just hope she finishes the story. Besides, i like stories sticking around for lots of time, but the hiatus sucks, but better then the people working on this masterpiece having health problems.

Like this episode more then the last one. The passage of time playing alot of great role on Frieren and how also Himmel party didnt do everything on their own, their win was a series of actions taken by others before them that helped pave the way, action in which are unfortunately somewhat forgotten by history (just like our world). But it was bittersweet to see the people of that village and Frieren remember the Hero of the South.

Wasn't as good as the first episode. Much slower, detached. The sword backstory was neat, but limited.
Also Hero of the South.
