How nostalgic... I really liked the art style (although that CG transformation scene looked absolutely terrible)

The subs could've been better though...

I mean really?

It was a nice episode. I have never expected too much of it, because in both anime and manga its not something that great. The art was good, too. I really liked the soundtrack, nothing special, but in old anime most great songs appeared in later episodes, so I have high expectations.

This episode was pure shoujo - in the best way possible!
I love the little lingering scenes between Usagi and Mamoru. It's not exactly the highest quality of animation and character design I've seen, but it's done competently and the most important thing is they got the tone just right to suck me into its magic. Atmospherically, it's gorgeous and magical.

I was never exactly a part of the Sailor Moon phenomena but I'm looking forward to this adventure. Just...lose that CG transformation, please.

I'm sorry but I hate the new transformation scene, it looks really cheap!

The original one with drawing animation was much more smooth and less…vocaloid MMD looking

OMG the nostalgia!! This series is literally gonna be epic now that it is following the manga! The animation will take some getting used to but it's beautiful (especially Tuxedo Mask). And I really like the opening theme. Not sure what to think about the CGI use. From what I can see so far, the pacing will be great.

I'm not going to lie the art style kind of scared me, but now after watching episode 1 it's really beautiful. The first episode felt a little rush, but so far it's really great. I really like Usagi way more than I thought. The transformation was kind of weird, but I still liked it.

The opening theme song was pretty nice although I prefer moonlight densetsu of course. The cgi transformation didn't bother me at all, really. And everyone seems a little more aware of what's going on. Like they never even mention the moon crystals until a good amount of episodes later. (Post-Nephlite) All in all, I give it 4/5. Can't wait for the nexr episode! :D

Usagi here doesn´t seem so childish like the original anime, I liked that, also liked a lot the feelings this episode gave me, only read a little of the manga to understand how would it be adapted and I liked it, will follow this to the end.

Same feels on the CGI complaint. But overall a pretty good episode, especially considering that it's only the first episode. Obviously this show was going to fall under a ton of scrutiny and face criticism if only because the fandom is massive, the hype was ridiculous, and the expectations were all over the place.

I think the part that bothered me was the lack of movement in the animation. It felt like there was an excess of "static" moments in the animation. Some parts moved and others didn't in some scenes, which made it feel cheap and kind of old (Speed Racer, lol). I think that's the explanation for the people who kind of felt like it was "slow" but couldn't really put their fingers on why. Because the plot pacing is good and clearly in line with the manga, the only reason it could feel slow is if the animation itself had a "slowness" to it.

The lack of moving parts was kind of weird, and the CGI was bad, but overall I found it enjoyable. Of course there are going to be people who will hate it no matter what, those who will love it no matter what, and everyone in between. I prefer to remain hopeful that they'll iron out the kinks and end up with something that at least pleases the average. And frankly, I will be okay with that.

Will I probably always feel that something could have been done "better?" Maybe, but I'm not going to let that rain on my parade, or anyone else's for that matter.
"You know the old saying; when life gives you lemons, go murder a clown."

"Our opponent is an alien starship packed with atomic bombs," I said. "We have a protractor."

The nostalgia factor is so high I want to cry years of joy. I loved it, it's a shame we are only getting two episodes a month.

I for one, was not bothered by the transformation sequence, but I do think it did not look as terrible as everyone is saying.

The voices. Well I can't complain here, I liked Mamoru's voice, sounded pretty hot. He looked that too. Lol. The only voice I didn't like was Usagi's. The old version or just say the YOUNGER version of her voice (actress) was a lot better. It had those moments when Usagi was turning serious or sad and then it sounded like you wanted to hug her. Such a sweet, delicate, velvety voice.... It sounds nothing like it now. And there WERE moments she could have sounded like that.... but I guess the actress got too old for that. Too bad.

I know Usagi's VA is the same, but I definitely agree with you. I mean you can tell it's the same VA too, but it just doesn't sound the same, obviously because it's been years. I actually found Usagi's voice to be quite annoying a few times in this episode >< And maybe it's also because the new art style makes Usagi look more mature and so the voice doesn't seem to fit the image, whereas in the old version, Usagi looked younger. Not a big problem though, I'll just have to get used to it.

Other than that, it was a good first episode :) But I'll always miss the old OP song. Wow, I have a strong urge to rewatch the old series now lol. I haven't even watched all the old ones either and can barely remember them.

So keep in mind I LOVE sailor moon ((I know all whom are here did)) and I watched every episode <3 and I was SO excited for this so even if i complain I can't help but adore the thought of lots of Sailor moon to come <3 I am thinking more then 200 eps this time?

Anyways I have to say a couple of things I wasn't a huge fan of, also forgot to mention I never read the manga I was more interested in the animated version so things could be from there.

Not a fan of
-Some voices sound like they are from a hentai I have seen here and there but i'll deal with it.
- Tuxedo mask is in his tuxedo, the exact one he wears when he "transforms" I kind of liked the original with his chill sunglasses.
- Bun head <-- will look into that I watched it last night. I am not sure if I remember that in the Japanese original version or I am thinking the english version I just like odango/meatball head better pretty sure that was what it was before sounded better.
- The transformation looks WAY to 3d for my taste and the thin arms in the beginning yikes, but in the first one after a few dozen episodes I would skip the transform anyways.
- "Melvins" hair ahahahah that is just something funny.

Other then that I have to get used to the new drawing style like everyone else especially Luna her eyes.. and I am sure within a few episodes I will just be doing more fangirling then EVER. I also have to admit I like the art for the ending song just so pretty <3 And I heard we will see human artemis I WILL DIE!! I won't be able to contain myself.

Nostalgia is enough to make me watch this and I really liked the first episode!
I like how all the girls look (beautiful like in the manga, can't wait to see the other girls), but I need to get used to how the guys look (especially Motoki). I don't know is it their chin :D ?

It's refreshing to see that the show has a more serious tone already.
I hope they will remake the transformaton scene sometime. It's too long and looks totally out of place -.-. But I guess the thing I miss the most is the badass (:D) music from the original series. There are some tracks in the original series which I really miss and where I hoped to hear a remake version :(.

Still I am excited to see the following episodes.

I don't know how Usagi's seiyuu sounded back in the past, but now it just doesn't work and you can hear how old the voice actress really is.

Anyway, it wasn't as great as I thought it'd be as a non-original-watcher, but decent and I'm looking forward to more. I expected it to be like Please Save My Earth because people compared the two.

I like the art for the boys. They're quite handsome. But for the girls, I find the eyes too big and hair too big as well.

Oh right, that CGI is gross.

It was alright, to be honest I wasn't too big on the first series at the beginning either so my reaction here is pretty consistent with that. It is indeed kind of strange to keep Usagi's VA and not the rest, though to be honest I was kind of surprised when I read in this thread that Mamoru's voice wasn't the same as his original. The OP isn't that great, but the chances of it matching up to one of the all time great anime OP's was pretty small anyway. I'm also not too crazy about the transformation sequences, though I heard that the manga didn't have those very often anyway so that may be the case here as well.

This is kind of getting me into the mood of seeing the rest of the old anime or maybe even giving the manga a look.

I liked the CG transformation but at the same time I wished it just wasn't CG. Loved the OP, I think I watched it like 5 times, loved how it sounded like the Sailors were singing themselves. I am not a fan of the ED though. I'm okay with not having Moonlight Densetsu since this is a 'fresh' start to the Sailor Moon series. I just hope that they keep the Star Locket theme later on. I love it!!

I'm SOO glad that Mamoru's voice actor doesn't have that nasal tone. I hated the original voice.

Overall, not a bad start. Can't wait a friggin' fortnight for the next episode. <3

Riding on the nostalgia won't be enough to make this a successful show, I think. But it's probably too early to tell. I kind of like the CG better than the regular animation. I like Luna's voice though and I'm looking forward to some of the Venus effects we saw in the OP. I'm gonna stick around at least until then.

No, not going to happen. This new Sailor Moon is 26 episodes total and will cover both Sailor Moon and Sailor Moon R in terms of the original anime.

This is fine since the only reason the old anime had so many episodes was cause it was chock full of crappy filler, monster of the day stuffs. The manga's plot was lightning fast on the other hand.

Sinnamon said:

This is how it was supposed to be. Tuxedo Mask in the beginning didn't have any "powers". His tux was always a plain ordinary tux. He started out as a thief on the hunt for the silver crystal, cause of some dreams he's been having basically.

They didn't actually change this. He started off calling her something different but switched to Odango atama after she yelled a bit lol.

I love everything about the transformation sequence except the CGI.

First half > second half but for TUXEDO KAMEN. I know that it's in the manga as well as the original anime, but I'm getting monster of the week vibes. (Please do not do this to us, show.)

Somehow still shots express none of the vivacity of the animation. Neither did the PV. I am pleased.

Viz is apparently looking into why only NicoNico included the Next Episode Preview for Act 2 (plays after the ED credits).

It was a 10/10 episode for me (HD = glorious). I loved the attention to all these manga details:

Greatly looking forward to where the story'll go (some parts of PGSM live-action I liked, but I seriously hope this'll be the definitive version of SM).

I don't think Usagi got "too old"; I think the gag or the uppity impression of the original SM anime was toned down. I hope it changes later since there were plenty of gag scenes in comic. HArd to say; everything is so bright and bubbly.

This is just ep 1. An opinion shouldn't be so final. It did the whole first chapter quite nicely.

MAMO LOOKS DELICIOUS!

Anyways, waiting for ep 2.

Just finished rewatching the first series last month so it is fresh in my mind. That being said there were some positives and negatives I found in this version.

The negatives:

While the OP is ok, it is no Moonlight Denetsu--it didn't really seem to fit the romantic content of the series. I'm also not entirely happy with the translation of the ED, I think there were probably better interpretations that could have been made to the lyrics.

I find the new female character designs to be unrealistic (and verging on anorexic). I thought the original was much more realistic--particularly for Usagi, Ami, and Makoto who looked more like a random collection of school girls who still had some physical maturing to do.

The positives:

Updated animation. Mamoru looks a lot more bishie in this version. It might just be the print, or the upgraded resolution, but this looks a lot better than the original 46 episode run (ie: the POV of Usagi falling down the stairs)

Instant chemistry between Mamoru and Usagi. This seemed to take quite a while longer in the first series (but I miss him calling her dumpling head).

Things to watch for:

It looks like they're cutting down the first season from 46 to 26 episodes, so we may miss some of the goofy MotW episodes that really didn't add much. If they are following the manga instead of the anime, does that mean we're going to miss the minor romances that cropped up between anime only or minor characters and the other senshi? Thus far it looks pretty quick paced, but I don't think I'll like the every other week schedule--on the bright side this allows me to finish the remaining 150 episodes in the first series (and allows everyone to rewatch the original or reread the manga to make comparisons).
Please don't feed the trolls!

Considering the main focus is not really romance but a group of girls beating various evil villains, i' say it fits far more. ITs also far more empowering song than the previous one.

If they are following the manga instead of the anime, does that mean we're going to miss the minor romances that cropped up between anime only or minor characters and the other senshi?

Yes. To say the least.
In return we will get deeper(or different) relationships for other characters.

Also actually "the first season" will be done un ~13 episodes if they continue following manga. Then the next episodes will be the second season.

So horrible horrible CGI in general I didn't mind the episode... my only real complaint would be usagi's voice. I found her highly annoying, sounding like she was 6 years old instead of 14, and in general it just grated on my ears and started giving me a headache.

It also sounded very cartoony, which I suppose would have been fine in the original run when everyone was a bit more cartoony, but now just feels really out of place as the majority of the new voices sounded like more modern anime and thus less cartoony.

I sadly might just have to wait for the english dubs to not listen to her horrid voice work and so I can zone out when she is on screen but still catch what is going on.... I might continue to watch in hopes that when the other scouts show up she will talk less/ stop sounding like a 6 year old cartoon character :/

edit: huh... I thought I had posted on MAL before.
