The fact that the Diclonius want to make everyone like them kinda makes me think about how sad people want to make everyone else sad too, as is mentioned in Lucy's flashback. The fact that in the end she sheds her horns might indicate that she is ready to become a person content with themselves and the world, altough this would characterize Nana as someone fated to suffer, since she doesn't lose her horns... either way, cool series, made me feel emotional at times, I liked it
@Coolzweg2

Fun fact, anime ending is different from the manga.

Rewatched this after almost 20 years. 10/10. Still. Really insane how such a beautiful story is hated by modern anime fans. They really don't know what's good anymore because they're so used to self-insert garbage

After all these years, the ending still destroys me. The older I get, the more heartbroken I am by the tragedy between the director and Mariko, which now overshadows the tragedy of Lucy and Kouta. The whole finale is heartrending.

a facebook reel got me watching this with my lover on a random lark and I was worried she wouldn't like it because I know too well the show's criticisms at this point. Yeah, it's juvenile, its gratuitous, and its pacing is so stilted the backstories feel hamfisted. But man, there's nothing else with an aesthetic like Elfen Lied. The opening episode's transition from Lilium into Lucy's helmeted naked body goring an entire legion captures the vibe so well. It's dark and gothic and romantic, how all Diclonius are young girls, the cerebral body horror, the way Diclonius are just reimagined elves, shit, even how the juvenile ecchi sex comedy juxtaposes all the preceding elements. Elfen Lied has an aesthetic I can't quite capture in words and unlike any other show I've watched.

I swear I've meant to read the manga my entire life, but every time I've the urge to dip back into it, I just rewatch the anime instead.
@Zadion discussions of anime's symbolism one can find on reddit make you appreciate opening more.

Anime and manga are different, I've heard. The first is about emotions, abuse, isolation etc; the second is about dicloniuses and their attempts to conquer the world (kinda; again, I didn't read the story).

ok, uh... where do i start...

i'm unsure how i feel abou the ending, i think a lot was left open. i was happy to see kouta and lucy finally have a heart-to-heart after all those years. it kind of gave me some hope that they'd stay together. but of course, he's back with his cousin...

and lucy let the institution kill her, it seems? makes sense that she would, but we never really got to see her truly happy :( (if we're not counting the days she spent with kouta in her childhood). but the ending is kind of ambiguous too, that could've been her at the entrance in the very end :O yeah, i've decided i'm gonna go with that

mariko and kurama's conversation, along with the first and last embrace, was emotional :'), i actually really enjoyed the director as a character. well, at least one of his daughters gets to live happily. mayu and her dog are happy and healthy as well, i can't say how glad i am that they didn't hurt the doggo xd

my opinion on yuka hasn't changed. she's boring, annoying, and whiny. she's just there to drool over her cousin. to be honest, this love triangle wouldn't have been absolutely corny to me if they weren't related, but i guess it's just some form of fanservice. lucy is better, anyway. nowhere near close comp

i enjoyed this anime! a lot more than i thought i would. lots of open ends, but enjoyable nevertheless. a lot of disturbing themes (the dog scene was most disturbing for me, though :/)

This ending is so much better than the manga one. By bypassing the whole diclonius dna stuff from the manga and the world end finale, it just leaves it as a deeply psychological story about trauma, abuse and schizophrenia.
