| At the start of the season, with people everywhere effectively saying "watch a completely different show that doesn't have what you want instead," I asked for recommendations of shows that are actually similar to Smartphone: happy SoL in a fantasy setting with an OP protagonist. I got three: Campanella, the "braindead" Shining Hearts, and the yet to air Death March. https://myanimelist.net/anime/34497/Death_March_kara_Hajimaru_Isekai_Kyousoukyoku (War on Geminar was also mentioned, but I didn't like it - boring asexual MC who never really wants any of the girls, boring political talk [I say this as a fan of UC Gundam], too much dependence on action scenes that made no impression on me. Smartphone, by contrast, has enough appeal in its (unintentional) comedy and vanilla pleasantness that it doesn't depend on action.) I'm halfway through Shining Hearts now, and I like it quite a bit. It definitely has the vanilla pleasantness. I'm just starting the reputedly more action-focused second half now, so I'll see if any OP MC comedy comes out, but so far everything leaning that way has been far more tense and foreboding than anything in Smartphone. Now I see two more recommendations: https://myanimelist.net/recommendations/anime/19369-35203 (Outbreak Company, already in my queue) https://myanimelist.net/recommendations/anime/10155-35203 (Dog Days) The girls in Dog Days don't look cute enough to make me want to watch the show. That was after all the only reason I started watching Smartphone, despite the obnoxious-looking MC, who turned out almost completely fine in the actual show. Gate has similar appeal in that you need to look past the poor direction and enjoy the hilariously one-sided battles and humble prostration of the proud noblewomen. But Gate's mashup offers far more novelty than Smartphone, and it's much more genuinely interesting, so of course it was received better. |

| this is nowhere near konosuba. there are dozens of isekai story out there, and only select few that can be described as interesting and unique, konosuba is within that category. isekai failed exactly at anything. it lack world building, what world, continent, race, situation regarding of the world. due to his opness, he get away with anything and everything without any trouble. bad guy can easily be dealt just because he is op. the harem is not exactly memorable either. i am actually amazed that this is getting an anime before any other interesting isekai out there. i checked on wiki it says that it is pretty popular, so it's possibly that this series only good in a novel form or the anime failed to convey how interesting this series. as of now, this shit nowhere near konosuba i rather read konjiki no moji tsukai if it just about traveling nonchalantly, not only it is interesting because the world situation is pretty clear, main character opness also in line with how powerful people in that world, and a lot of lolis is a plus too. |

Your mistake is the assumption that the audience is looking for something "interesting." ;) I could hardly be further from a Thinking-Judging type. None of my favorites are there because they were "interesting." They're there because they were emotional and/or fun experiences. I'm not sure I'd want a version of Smartphone that was more competently executed. Same for having the MC actually face difficulties. Either change would render the show less charming, and less fun. |
