Another great episode that ended abruptly. New characters introduced include Tamiya, Yuzuriha, and two brothers. I'm not sure how long Tamiya and the brothers will survive for but I think Tamiya won't survive that long since he will be targeting others and is going at it solo.

Yuzuriha with flirty and manipulative tactics, I didn't think they'd work on Gabimaru since his goal is to suvive to get back with his wife. I'm not sure why Sagiri fainted but I guess it's because she got overwhelmed by the number of monsters. I figure she'll bounce back and be more effective and I hope that she continues to trust Gabimaru who saved her life again after sparing it last episode.

Interesting to see all of the different monsters, with some of them even being able to talk.
Looks like none of them were really much of a threat to Gabimaru though.
That Yuzuriha seems like she will definitely become a problem for them later.

Another boring episode with a lot of stupid exposition, I think I'll stop now. I've given this anime too many chances and so far I haven't received anything besides Takahashi Rie being the cutest thing in the world.
If you're a fanboy, please don't waste my time.

Watch more movies, please.

Perhaps, this is hell.

Hoping Sagiri gets better. Feels like she's kind of degrading to just being waifu bait, especially when characters like Yuzuriha has her beaten in most departments already.

Not sure why this show has such a high average rating. Other than the badass main character, story and characterization is incredibly generic, and animation is passable at best. Worst of all, it has a female deuteragonist who's supposedly a trained samurai but so far has been nothing but an annoying damsel in distress.

Does anyone else really hate what the author has done to Sagiri's character since episode 1? Every episode she has become weaker and more useless and appears to be having a mental breakdown. Complete 180 from her character in episode 1. There are ways to portray someone who is conflicted and unsure of themselves without turning them into a complete waste of screen time.

That is the point of her character and that is how she will grow. The entire episode was about changing and adapting which is what she needs to do to survive. In the first episode she wasn't in an unusual environment or a crazy situation so she was able to seem stronger. Now she is in a very overwhelming environment and she needs to adapt to survive in this essentially new world. It is a great way to set up character development instead of the usual way of just saying she is weak and needs to get stronger. The show is saying she needs to adapt because she is strong in the traditional sense, but they aren't in a traditional situation.
I am with aussie on this one.
Her character makes too much of a 180 to take her progression seriously, even if she is 'just overwhelmed by the situation'.
She was introduced as someone capable of killing Gabimaru after all, and now just 3 episodes later she was turned into princess peach.

Tbh I'm disappointed.

Came in with expectation of strong female lead cuz of first episode
Now we know it's another useless damsels in distress female main character.
Geez this episode really show how weak/ useless Sagiri is.
Like... If she's this weak why do Gabimaru shows fear when they first fought in ep1?
She might be on the same level of the filler criminals he killed in episode 2.

Also that whole beheader clan feels so weak now, why do those super human criminals even afraid of them and need to be pardoned?

Honestly, I loved the two firsts episodes but since then I don't knwo what's going on anymore.
Last week's episode was kinda boring, but this week? I was so thrilled during the first part but when Sagiri passes out... I simply don't get why they've shown the backstory of two characters we know nothing about!
And speaking of Sagiri... she's just dull. I liked her at the beginning, but she doesn't do anything. She just stands there DOING THE ABSOLUTE NOTHING, I wish she would do more, to be honest.

There was no 180. She was only so composed in the first episode because we were only seeing her from Gabimaru's perspective. She has always had inner conflict, we just weren't privy to it yet.

Sorry but Yuzuriha is a pretty key character in the show. Also about Sagiri, she’ll get her get-back, don’t worry. Sagiri is actually very important in the show and I can’t say exactly why since it’ll be a spoiler.
Ahhh okay, I'll just have to deal with it then haha. I'm glad Sagiri's gonna be important though. Thanks! :)

[Episode 4 SPOILER]
The best thing about the episode was the last part related to the brothers; in less than 6 minutes we got to know everything related to the background of 2 characters from their past, their journey, aspirations, philosophy and the type of their relationship, and most importantly I got to relate to them, without forgetting their cool character design. I still do not know know the importance of the first part of the episode related to Tetsunosuke that gave us a glimpse into his background even though he didn't have a major role in the episode, and I don't think this is all about him, I preferred if we gave a full arc character later like they did with the brothers instead of taking a part of this episode. The part about the Kunoichi wasn't bad, we got to know some infos about the creatures and the treacherous nature of Kunoichis, which I think will be of importance in the future, but I still didn't fully connect with our 2 main characters, especially since I do not feel any danger to our protagonist, Sagiri's confidence problem was interesting at first but later it became a little annoying since it became so repetitive.

If you want a better explanation then I think you should see this as more as character development.

Sagiri is more or less a traditional person and is very strait laced. She follows the rules to a T. However, the situation they are in isn’t traditional. The situation is essentially a foil to her character. She has to learn how to adapt to this abnormality, that is the island. Lastly, Sagiri’s character never changed. The reason you see her so composed is because it’s from Gabimaru’s perspective.

During the scene where the prisoners are taken to the shogun, Sagiri’s hesistance and lack of resolve is shown.

Also, Sagiri is a lot more important than you think she is. You’ll see what I mean when the power system is introduced.

ngl this shit was nerfed. i mean I know this has to be acceptable to air on tv but the animation feels wonky and these character appearances were definitely nerfed. yuzuriha perfect example her boobas are so spaced out you can comfortably fit a box in between them.

interesting episode though

Flashy monster design and then they all get one shot.... What a waste.

Seems like this show would be more like Btoom battle royal rather than threat of nature/ wanders/mysterious creatures like Made in Abyss. Sad.

2.5/5

I didn't enjoy the episode on my first watch because I thought that it was stale & lacking in proper direction but after subsequent re-watches, I have grown into it but not by much

The action sequences were fine. Nothing outlandish. I absolutely prefer the uncensored gore though as it adds to the severity of any encounter and battle. Some saigiri moments in that battle felt way off and transitions were mostly horrible. Atleast, the animation remained mostly consistent but it's not saying much. The Suzihara scenes went for way too long than it should've. Look, I don't mind the Best Girl shine but it generally felt like it took the bulk of the episode. Her VA is perfect and In fact, the only prominent highlight of the whole episode if im being brutally honest here. The Chobe part of the episode was decent too. Again, some choreography flaws here & there but mostly done justice

Disappointing would be an understament. I actually enjoyed the first 2 episodes than the latest ones, mostly because of some really stale direction choices and that's really not a good sign. For a hype battle shounen, this is just OKAY so far~~

The Yamadas are only strong with their swords. But they did not expect that the island to be something more powerful than them and some other convicts. Only Eizen was shown dead lol

Also Sagiri was just overwhelmed by the island. She is still strong later on

Attack of the centipedes, giants, and other monsters...although I guess it's not surprising to see them in this type of show now.

As usual, it's great they kept the scenes uncensored and we got action and violence at its finest. It's also interesting to see Sagiri and Gabiru working together now, instead of putting a blade against each others' throats. Yuzuhira is also back so she brings her charismatic personality into the episode. Not going to lie, I enjoyed watching her brief interaction with Gabiru.

Pretty based action episode. One other guy I also paid attention to is Aza who seems to enjoy fighting and violence.

Same. The transition from the Sagiri in Ep.1 to the one in Ep.2 is so abrupt they ended up looking like two completely different people. Her insecurities and weaknesses should have been portrayed in a more gradual way but now it seems her personality indeed did a 180 as you say.

Great episode, we got introduced to 3 interesting characters. Yuzuriha, Choubei and Toma. We don't really know anything on Yuzuriha besides the fact that she's a liar who can't be trusted. Idk they might be in hell but I'm not sure if teaming up with her is the right call. Normally teaming up in this situation would be a given, but she just seems so untrustworthy so you never know when she'll try to kill you lmao.

The brothers backstory was pretty good. I like that ideology their way of thinking, very practical. I can't wait to see how these two will fare against obstacles coming their way

?? This show actually feel less budget than most of the big shows Mappa handled in previous seasons.
Which is totally understandable since the manga is finished and it's not as popular as shows like Chainsaw Man and Jujutsu so you can tell less heart / soul/ budget are put into the show.
Not saying production is bad , it's just pretty standard, slightly above average at best.

Does this ever get good? This shit is so boring. Just willing to give it one more shot before I drop it for good. And I'm only doing that in case MAPPA kicks it up a notch next episode. I just want to see something cool. I was hoping for something like JJK which story-wise is as generic as it gets, but at least that has fun characters, fun battles, and also beautiful animation every once in a while. This just has a great OP and everything else is underwhelming. Did the D-team at MAPPA work on this?

None of the characters introduced so far are likeable. They are annoying. They all have boring backstories. Nonetheless, I was excited about the monsters introduced last episode. I do feel the island itself was potentially exciting, but then in this episode you have these characters killing them all off with just one strike of their blades or their bare hands. This show has like zero suspense. I'm just gonna rip this giant monster's head off with one karate chop... SICK. How exciting. Are their lives really at risk? It sure doesn't feel like it unless they are one of the executioners. This story is fucking stupid when you think about it just a little... Why would any of these apparently superhuman characters who can kill these giant monsters with their bare hands and broken weapons allow themselves to be captured by regular humans and put on death row?
