Tír na nÓg is one of my favourite short animations! Thanks so much for including it! Also a big fan of the Brothers Quay, so it's nice to see them included as well!
I've been compiling a list of shorts on YT for awhile now and here are some of my other favourites:
Every Moment is a Miracle - Mardo El-Noor
Auckland [New Zealand] animation director, Mardo El-Noor's masterpiece, Every Moment is a Miracle, premiered at the New Zealand International Film Festival in 2011. This work is mostly landscapes and reminded me of the works of Iblard Jikan and those by Imperial Boy.
Red (2010) - Columbian take on a famous fairy tale/horror story by Jorge Jaramillo and Carlo Guillot. Cute story, very nice.
Argentinian animator Carlos Lascano's The Legend of the Scarecrow was nominated for both the Goya and Oscar Academy Awards in 2005. A visually stunning work with a great story.
Volgens de Vogels ("According to Birds" 2008, Netherlands) is a collaboration of sublime hand drawn pencils etchings of birds by Dutch illustrator Linde Faas. If you haven't see this before, I highly recommend it as the skill is just wonderful!
Franck Dion's L'inventaire Fantôme (Phantom Inventory - 2004, French.) is a fantastic display of spookiness and clever animation.
Milovan Circus by Belgium animation director Gerlando Infuso tells the story of Iakov, a mime and once the star of the Milovan Circus as he reminisces of long past rose coloured days. The puppetry and animation at work in this piece is nothing short of breath-taking.
under the stone - Joanna Lurie
While I'm on a Francophone kick, I want to mention Joanna Lurie, who is best known for her awarding winning short film: The silence beneath the bark / le silence sous l'écorce: . Personally, I am also rather partial to the above animation as well because of it's used of primative music and the abstract plot that was like reading a children's picture book.
Argine - Julia Siméon
A short film by French animator Julia Siméon whose look reminded me a great deal of Coraline, but with better textures. The story is simple, but full of whimsy.
Alma - Rodrigo Blaas
Slimtime - "The SlimTime Team" (see below)
The last two of my favourites are certainly the most famous of the lot, I suspect. The first, Alma, was produced by ex-Pixar animator Rodrigo Blaas. this 2009 Spanish short film has a very smooth animation style and a pretty creepy story. In the second, Slimtime, is the Supinfocom (in Arles, France) grad film by Bertrand Avril, Pierre Chomarat, David Dangin and Thea Matland. The story is fun, but will likely piss someone off. I thought it was funny and charming though. |
