I was just wondering if this is worth watching. I watched the first episode and didn't really like it. I was wondering if it gets better as it goes on. Also I was wondering if its even close to as good as Zeta Gundam.

Well.. the first episode was some sort of recap, wasn't it?

Most people consider the early episodes far too goofy, especially when coming right from Zeta. As a whole, ZZ isn't nearly as coherent as Zeta, and then there's the comedic and outlandish elements that continue throughout a large part of the show. If you can stomach that, then ZZ ends up shifting to a something more "serious" about halfway through.

Overall, it probably doesn't measure up to Zeta, but it has its moments.

Worth watching? Sure. If you can make it to episode 20 and 21. That is when the show finally gets a direction and begins to pick up. Episode 18 and 19 reintroduce Haman from Zeta, and also debut the breakout character for ZZ Elpeo Puru.

I'll give you a map for what to expect.
From episodes 2 (which should be episode 1 since it picks up directly where Zeta left off and is not a clip show/soft preview of the ZZ) through Episode 9 are frustratingly bad and goofy.

Episode 10 and 11 tone down the goofiness slightly.

Episode 12-17 more ZZ garbage. In so many words, Zeta Zaku, Moon Moon, Goofy and Zeon officers so incompetent and stupid that the Zabi family, Ramba Ral, M'Quve, Norris Packard, and the Zeon Team from War in the Pocket would be rolling over in their graves (if any of them had a grave) if they saw what Zeon had been reduced to.

Episode 19 is when people start dying. Episode 21 ends with the aforementioned Zeon officers dying in a horrible explosion via suicide bombing from an AEUG member. ZZ redeems itself from that point on.

Really? I started hating it intensely when Puru was introduced which was about at episode 18 or so. Before that it was goofy, but still okay, since then my hatred for the characters has been erupting constantly.

I'll watch a few more to see if it gets better, but right now I didn't find the first 17 episodes that bad compared to what happened once Puru was introduced. I hope she's one of the Zeon officiers who die at the end of 21, in which case I'm definitely gonna finish the show. I doubt it though, given how you called her the 'breakout character' of the show. And yeah she stole the show, or rather all the enjoyment I had left for it. I'm constantly cringing when she's on screen, so bad that I started skipping scenes with her. She feels like a harem bimbo more than anything.

Can you still say I'll enjoy the remaining episodes? Because I've really been thinking about droping the show because of her, I just don't want to interrupt the UC timeline if there's any chance it gets better/remotely enjoyable again.

^ Depends on what episode you are on. When the ZZ team gets to Africa, that IMO is the high water mark for the show.
Episodes 25-36 (episode 32 is kind of meh). Keep watching!

fuxk yes
i love the characters, especially becha
but dont watch it with mindset "i have to catch up 50 episode", you wont enjoy it, its not really plot-driven, more focuse into character development.
its fun and enjoyable, one of my favorite of UC series

@Ckan

"isn't nearly as coherent as Zeta"

Interesting, I'm having the exact opposite experience. For me, Zeta was a mess. It never focused on one idea and instead jumped around between plot threads to the point where it was hard to follow or get invested in what's going on. There were plenty of times when an important plot development would happen and then just...get brushed over in the next episode. By the end I just did not care about what was happening on screen and was happy it was over.

ZZ isn't perfect, but it worked a lot better for me than Zeta. I even enjoyed the goofiness from the early episodes and missed it as the series went on.

@AllStarNemesis Just out of curiosity, how bad would be considering skipping episodes?

tbh, I watched only the movies not too long ago, but im very fond of Haman, and if anything, I wanna see her.

@Ketsura If I may reply and suggest something as well: if you want to see Haman in action and you've enjoyed other Gundam anime (you mentioned movies, so I assume you saw compilation movies of the original series and Zeta, yes?), then I recommend watching Double Zeta without any episode skipping. By doing so, you will get the full ZZ experience, with all its pros and cons, which are heavily subjective in my opinion.

Many Zeta fans seem to enjoy thrashing ZZ for whatever reason, often glorifying Zeta as if it were a flawless masterpiece. Just like @ChangeLeopardon noticed earlier in this thread, ZZ is more coherent than Zeta. I also felt it was, but after looking at both series as objectively as possible, I noticed that ZZ tops Zeta in technical aspects of coherency. This doesn't mean that Zeta isn't coherent at all, even with the cons mentioned in ChangeLeopardon's post. It simply means that ZZ handles this particular element better, as a sequel show should. Both series have their fair share of stronger and weaker sides, but it's ridiculous to overly hate one another. After all, they are both connected to each other in many ways.

Anyway, it might be a little hard to switch from your previous Gundam experience. Movies are more concise, often look better, and last less than a series that has many episodes, etc. But give it a try! While it might feel awkward at first and remind you of, say, pacing as it was like in the movies, it shouldn't take a lot of time to adjust. :) Good luck! I hope you'll have fun.

I'm answering this to people who are maybe asking the same thing.

It's going to be hard to adapt to the tone in the first few episodes right after watching Zeta. I finally got accustomed to it probably at episode 5 or 6, but the series stays that way up until episode 20. Episode 21 is when the series starts to become more serious.

I personally loved ZZ's episode 21–36, it's comparable to 0079 and Zeta. But then it becomes stale again at episode 37, and the peak of this staleness is at episode 41. Episode 42 onwards it starts to become more serious again, but IMO still can't compare to episode 21–36. Though, the Mobile Suit fights are good, probably even better than 0079 and Zeta.
