*gross uncontrollable sobbing* I signed up for happiness and cheerful swimmers, I didn't ask for any of this! All the humour in the beginning of this entire episode couldn't ameliorate the pain that was the ending. Kokoro is 100% brokoro now.
And I'll go back to speak about the ending later.
It's definitely not right to be blaming anyone for Haru's problems, not even Haru. All of the people that know him are clearly extremely concerned, but none of them know quite how to approach the situation because Haruka pushes away any hands extended towards him. He's scared of responsibility and the future; having to make decisions by himself because other people won't be there for him. I believe Haru would much rather float around in a pool all day, but that is no way to have a successful life, and that's why the entire concept of the future contradicts who he is. He is a free spirit who shrugs off the burden of his problems in favour for swimming, and that's why it's more crucial than ever for Haru to figure out what he wants to do. How to suggest that to him is another matter. Some are too afraid to speak to him directly. The ones who do are often met with resistance. The only time I've ever seen Haru angry is when someone is strongly suggesting that he takes action in his life. Rei said that Haru needs to figure things out himself, but his method, though initially appearing more reasonable, may not be strong enough to stimulate Haru into doing something.
Most notably, when Sousuke said that Haru needed to take a step forward, he instead turned around because Makoto was there. I think this is highly symbolic in some way- is Makoto holding Haru back because he's afraid to leave his best friend, is Haru reluctant to leave Makoto, who represents stability, warmth, and familiarity; is Haru too concerned about Makoto's future to focus on his own? Their relationship has become a lot more complicated in this season and quite honestly, I'm terrified to see what will happen.
It looks like Rin may have been scouted by somebody from Australia. That would be interesting- wasn't that his dad's profession? I could be wrong, though. That will definitely give him the chance to pursue his childhood dream, though without Sousuke and possibly without Haru, it will be a rather lonely journey. Here we see the difference between Haruka and Rin. Haru, though seeming independent, is highly reliant on others; Rin can pursue his dream without having to worry about other people being left behind, even though he is more social than Haru is. Rin is not afraid to chase the unknown, but even though Haru didn't say anything about it, I think he is afraid of chance. Water is reasonable; it usually remains the same, with some level of unpredictability, but nothing compared to what he would face on the world stage. Though Sousuke is too concerned with Rin to understand how Haru feels, I believe he'll be a good supporting force for Rin in the years to come. But what am I saying? I can't insist for sure whether or not Rin will decide to go to Australia. Perhaps swimming on a team has taught him the value of sticking with your friends.
And...here we go. The argument between Haru and Makoto was terrifying. I never thought I would use that word to describe this anime, but I was actually scared about what would happen. The last thing I wanted to see them do was get in a fight. Ships aside, I believe their friendship is perhaps one of the most valuable parts of this anime and now, it appears as though it's been damaged, if not completely broken. However, I can understand Haru's anger. Other people bothering him was enough, but now his best friend, who is supposed to know him best and always support him no matter what, who never really forces Haru to do anything, is one of them. It's uncharacteristic of Makoto to try and forcefully convince Haru to do something, and unfortunately for the poor Mako-chan, he said all the wrong words and now Haru runs again from the truth. When Makoto said that they all loved Haru, I had just a second to smile before everything went wrong. As I said before, I've never seen Haru so angry, expressing an emotion other than complacency or indifference. And the same applies for Makoto, who I've never seen like that. Are they friends, still? A part of me wants to believe that their friendship can transcend this conflict; another part thinks that since Makoto now is part of that group who urges him forward, Haru will avoid him for as long as possible.
With Makoto going to Tokyo, there might not be long to wait. |
