i've finished both series. but im still left puzzled about one thing. i've come to understand that there are different routes? are there romance involved in theese? what is the purpose of theese routes when they all ocur within the dream world? example: read about the kurugaya route, which were in the series aswell. lets say they fall in love with eachother (did they do that in the series? or was is it just my intepretation?) but in the real world Riki falls for rin right? then there couldn't possible be other romances besides rin and riki. so what purpose does the other routes hold?
long question, but thanks alot

The literal point of these routes are to find out about the characters. Unlike in the anime, where you learn about the girls stories just naturally, you find out about their backstories by doing one of the girls routes. Once you've completed their route, you then go back and do another route to learn about another girl. Romance is involved in all these routes simply because that's what the game is but you do have the 'true' route, which is rin. This pattern is similar for all Visual arts Key works like rewrite and clannad.

In the anime the girl purpose are to help Riki growing up. It was all a plan of Kyousuke to let Riki and Rin survive since they would have been the only survivor of the bus crash.

And yes Riki x Rin is the canon couple at the end of the anime, and all of the girl had no romance with Riki except Kurugaya, but that romance only happened in the dream world so both of them forgot all about it making Riki x Rin the canon couple.

Rin's route is canon in the visual novel too. While all routes are technically canon due dream world effect and they were all part of Kyousuke plan to help Rin and Riki grow, Rin's true route is the end-all route. This is why Rin's True route HAS to be the final route you play and is only unlocked after you've done everything else.

I guess they decided to keep romance in Kurugaya's route cuz its the only route where Riki actively pursue the girl, whereas he mostly acted as emotional support in the other routes, so it could be argued to be important for his development. That or the anime staff were Kurugaya fans.
