I don't understand what Shinobu's motivation is supposed to be in this episode. In a breezy comedy like this, maybe the only piece of development has been that Shinobu isn't interested in Ataru anymore. Indeed once she's on the mountain she's only interested in keeping Mendou to herself, which would have been easier if she hadn't put him near Lum herself.

Well, whatever.

Haha he sure got tricked :p but I do still find it strange he got like a girl going after him and for her he doesn't really care much...

Oh well, pretty fun skiing episode though!

I think that at this point, Shinobu is trying to both keep Ataru and Mendou as options. She's doing the first deliberately, still hoping Lum gives up, more of a habit that for a good reason, and the latter subconsciously, at least for now.

This development happened so gradually I didn't even realize she fell out of love until you mentioned it.

I don't blame her, though. She has every right to turn her back on Ataru

I knew from the start the snow queen was going to be Lum. Why else would her face be obscured at the beginning? (Not to mention the fact that she was okay with Ataru seeking a kiss from the queen.)

I've read a small amount of the manga and I discovered something mildly interesting; I'm fairly sure the original concept was a love triangle farce where Ataru and Shinobu are kept apart by Lum serving as a comic villain. This can still be seen in the anime in how early episodes are often about Lum imposing some sort of nonsense on Ataru.

It's most clear in a chapter (never adapted to anime) where Ataru and Lum travel into the near future and encounter Ataru's son. It's later revealed to the reader that Shinobu is the boy's mother, seeming to confirm that she and Ataru are destined to be together.

I don't know how the shift to Lum as the real heroine of the series happened (maybe because a weird alien is more interesting than a normal girl with a bad temper or maybe just because of the raw sex appeal her always wearing a bikini) but I think the series really turned out better for it.

I didn't know that. I heard that Ataru and Shinobu were paired together at first, but fans thought it was better if Ataru and Lum got together. I would agree.

While she's not a bad character, per se, Shinobu was a bit too much of a plain Jane to really work with Ataru.

Well that's due, I believe, to changes applied to Ataru at the same time Lum was re-cast as main heroine (and made less aggressive and meddling); Ataru's original character was a boy who loved a girl but had the bad habit of letting his attention wander to other girls. He then gets a comical punishment in the form form of a beautiful girl he doesn't want around him. After the characterization shift, he's a shameless (wannabe) womanizer who rejects Lum despite desiring her because she wants a monogamous commitment.

Already seemed weird that Lum agreed to go to that particular ski-resort knowing Ataru only wanted to see the Snow Queen. Also seemed weird that she gave him a charm for the contest.

Another fun episode! I love how over time they're getting better and better at the over elaborately animated chase scenes in this show. A good tour de force with the race. And the obvious ending haha. Good stuff!

Ten-chan looked so out of place at the starting line.

Another chaotic episode. It's so entertaining whenever there's an all out competition.

The original, original idea was just that Ataru was a really unlucky guy, Lum was just the first misfortune to deal with and there were going to be more, so the first couple episodes after the premier she's not there, then they brought her back in the manga because she was so popular.

They do have some scene involving Shinobu and Ataru's kid in the future - prior to this episode, in the Anime. I don't remember what the whole episode was about but it had something to do with a class reunion or something, and Ataru was like afraid to find out who the mother was, but it was just Shinobu.
