For me the ending has the potential to seriously undermine the entire series however, on the flipside a really good ending results in me being surprisingly forgiving to the series.

Hmm, I do not think so, perhaps it can change the overall view that you have on the anime but in a bad way but of course you won't say it is a bad anime because of the bad ending. Same thing for a bad anime with a good ending, personally I can't forgive an anime I just drop. I dropped one anime in the past and people told me that it was getting better and better with the episodes but I just could not continue.

I would like to know in detail what you mean perhaps I have misunderstood.

i completely agree with everything redtitian said. if we are talking about movies or shows the ending is indeed the most important part.it is the final taste you are left with,it is inconceivable not to expect much from it.two of my favorite shows used to be dexter and himym, and we all know how badly that ended...i got almost zero respect now for these shows.the ending really shows the ability of the writers, directors, animators, etc to wrap up a good idea.if the ending is not satisfying, its like they give you a big middle finger for watching their work.

Yeah you are right ending are really important, some anime have even been remaked for giving a better ending and a better story.

For example, (spolier alert of code geass)
in code geass in the last episode the main protagonist dies, and that exactly what made it one of the best anime ever.

But sometimes endings are not the only thing that u should rate a anime on, making a good anime/manga is really hard job the writers first release their show and after seeing its popularity they try to make more seasons which eventually hinders them to give a good ending.
But thats only my own personal opinion :)

umm actually the main character doesn't die at-least they cut that bit out where they show he is still alive out so they could make people think what they wanted

Personally I think a great example of the ending needing to be important is in Toradora! I personally fell in love with that anime after struggling through the first few episodes. The ending however took that love and left it hanging in the air with a sense of incompleteness. A good ending, in my opinion, ought to wrap up the story, the characters lives, and be a finale. This is for series that are ending on that episode without planning on a second season, etc. etc.

^ im with that a bad ending or no ending whatsoever "yes there are anime that do that" cough gun frontier and others can utterly turn an anime to trash in an instant or
i'll look at with a lot less respect i.e. "Deadman Wonderland" --wtf either do it right or leave it the hell alone
Decent/possibly mediocre anime into classics i.e. School days
Even Katangatari --- that ending was so fulfilling that it changed my view of the series for much better

or Nana ---because of author sickness and how great it had been to that point
it was left immortalized as anime with "Untold Greatness" remaining

Endings can Make or break a series for better or worse and Mediocre endings simply leave weak impressions but no bad feeling for the anime

Am all about the ride and not about the destination.
If the anime was enjoyable in a way that you had to come for more, then its a winner in my book. One of the hardest things accomplishment in anime/writing/film is a good or evil ending (which ever the creator chooses), as you become invested in this anime you become attache to a few characters in which you want them to have the better ending. Same goes for the other viewers.
but it all comes down to what the creators vision of the ending is for them, all we can do is thanks for the epic experience the anime brought you and respect their ending.

but yea...I do hate it when the anime just stops airing

Endings are a slippery slope for me. But over all. Endings defiantly do matter and can easily turn an anime from something spectacular to something terrible. Here is the reason why. When you start an anime, and go along for the ride. If it is really good, you get very in versed into the story, and the plot elements. You grow to care for the characters and the struggles they go through. But, if the ending comes around at the end of the climax to the epic story you have been following for so long. The ending sucks and leaves a bad taste in your mouth. For me, this kinda makes the whole thing feel like it was for absolutely nothing. Making the experience pointless. Especially with "Read the Manga Endings"

An example of one of those would be Deadman Wonderland. But, these anime are created for the sole purpose of promoting the manga. Which, in that case. You can give the Authors some leeway, but if you don't read or buy manga like me...Then it kinda suck to be you, and then you can't really do anything about it. But in Deadman wonderlands case, it is even worse because not only did they end it on the worst cliff hanger of all time. But they ended the series with a full episode dedicated to a side character...Normally I like it when they do things like that. But the over all story should come first.

Though, for some anime. The ride to the ending was so amazing and fun, that it didn't matter wht the ending was. A good example of that was Clannad After Story. It had one of the biggest cop out endings of all time, just for the sake of a happy ending...Which are good ad fun at first. But when you look back on it...Those kinda endings are the worst kind. Because they make you feel like the whole ride up the the final ending was for absolutely nothing. But despite the ending being not very good. The ride leading up to it was so amazing and emotional. That it did not hinder my over all enjoyment, and actually, it increased my original enjoyment.

So yeah. I guess the point I am trying to get across is that whether the ending matters or not depends on the anime. But I would say normally, it does.

Basicly aslong as it dosent have any unanswered plot holes (unless there allready planning to bring out a second season) the anime has to have a good ending eaither if the character dies or live's nothing should be untold
