Ishikura’s actions come off as weird to me. I understand the paranoia he may have felt over climbing into a location that could be his end, but to look everywhere else and not come back to the conclusion that he’s down the ladder makes me feel uneasy. But the narrator did say “unable to find Asai” so maybe I should accept that as fact and say it may not be more than that. As for the hiding spot of Asai, that was awesome. To try and lead Ishikura down into the darkness with their backs against the walls and bash his light until both were blind… that’s good. As good as it could get. Even under these circumstances Asai put together his best odds of survival, Itou Kaiji over here!

I think one of my favourite pages in this manga is the purely black page of spiralling thoughts. Just as Asai would see in the pitch black, we see nothing as well. By taking us out of the material world it creates this feeling of not being grounded, the poisonous time escapes us as well. It's an excellent page for what surrounds it, and I'm sure somebody could use it for a Hunter x Hunter joke.

However, going with my uneasy feelings, the clock going off is scary to me. My first thought was that Ishikura could have found the clock as he was looking everywhere, and if he did, he could have set it to go off sooner as a bait for Asai to come out. It is important to note that the narrator said Ishikura couldn’t find Asai, but it did not specify why he went quiet. Another thought I had was that if Ishikura was nervous to go down the ladder he could block the top and unbarricade the ground floor, Asai would try to climb up and he’d come in and see Asai climbing, unable to escape, and he could kill Asai there. So, there’s too much going on here to make me feel relief.

Ishikura blocked Asai route. I wonder if Ishikura will come down the ladder.

That was a thrilling chase, but a fight is imminent now.
