What are some anime you find overrated?

Angel Beats! - Gotta say I really disliked this anime. The slice of [after]life aspect was okay, but the story, character development, and humor aspects were messy. The story was so rushed; wtf even happened in the end in that computer room? What was the point? Almost every character except for Tenshi and the MC get brushed off to the side like they ever existed. The emotion they were trying to invoke with the graduation sequence had me laughing; they're already dead, why should I be sad that they're "gone"? They were trying too hard...sorry Angel Beats, but Haibane Renmei did it 10000x better.

Shinsekai yori - The anime looked like it was tailor-made for me. I love psychological, dystopian, mysteries with sci-fi and supernatural elements. I REALLY wanted to like this anime, but the execution didn't work for me. Or maybe my expectations got in the way, but I couldn't enjoy this at all.

For the most part, I did enjoy Angel Beats. I especially thought the MC's background story (him finding motivation to help people and the subsequent train scene) was well done, and most of the characters were entertaining. I do agree that it was rushed towards the end and was melodramatic at parts. But I can see how it was emotional for them. Sure, they are dead. But they have still been there "living" with one another day after day and know they are headed their separate ways - whether they die for realz this time or get reincarnated or whatever happens.

Basically, I thought it was good and enjoyed it but I agree that it is overrated.

As for Shinsekai Yori, I ended up dropping at like episode eight so I can't give a full opinion. But man, it was a letdown for sure. The story was all over the place, the characters were (to me) annoying, and it seemed every "deep" or philosophical concept was exaggerated and shoved down your throat. I too normally love dystopian stories and psychological thrillers, but I couldn't enjoy it at all.

I think Mawaru Penguindrum is pretty overrated. Everyone goes on and on praising its amazing symbolism and whatnot, but the story itself was unbearable. I know I've said this before but that psychotic stalker girl who thought she had to fuck her dead sister's childhood friend and have his child in order to "become one" with her sister was just fucking retarded. She even drugged the dude and tried to rape him, for christ's sake. The other stories weren't all that interesting beyond the first/second time the sister "died" and they also sexualized her way too much.

Also, Elfen Lied had literally the worst characters I have ever seen in any anime. There was not a single one that I truly liked, and some/most were just plain annoying. The story was pretty intriguing but I think they tried too hard to make life shit for the diclonius. And for a one-cour anime it sure had a LOT of repeated scenes.

No Game No Life. The deus ex machina crap killed the suspense, and all the infodumps made me tired.

Going through the top 150, here are the anime i rated 3/5:

Gurren Lagann and Nisekoi - too many exaggerated tropes, not my style

Clannad first season - nothing special as a totally not harem romcom

Durarara - second half sucked donkey balls, focusing on all the boring characters with their shitty 3 way conflict

Psycho Pass - hard to take seriously for some reason i can't quite put my finger on; also, it's pretty much a worse version of Shin Sekai Yori which aired the same season

Tonari no Totoro - with how old it is, it might be a case of Seinfeld is Unfunny and high expectations here, but too little totoro, and too much boring human children... also that scene where they take a bath with their dad o_0

Bakemonogatari - Zetsubou Sensei meets Mononoke in a powerpoint slideshow... perhaps one not familiar with these 3 stuff might get more enjoyment out of it; i liked Nise more tho

An anime shouldn't be considered a masterpiece if only 4 out of its 22 episodes are good. Texhnolyze is the most boring show I've ever forced myself to finish. My brief review.

Planetes doesn't deserve an 8.40 rating. It's a 5, tops. I gave it a 4 because I thought it was too stupid and sexist for a 5. Here's my quick rant review of it, which most people, likely the show's fan base, have found "unhelpful". Pssht... I think it's a very helpful review, lol.

Psycho Pass - It's basically a poor man's Ghost In The Shell. It is a fine show but not that good.

Mirai Nikki - I don't know why it has high ratings. There are random violence and illogical charaters all around.

Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo - The concept is fine but i did not like the main character. She acts way too much childishly for her age.

Shingeki no Kyojin, not nowadays but from the beginning. Nothing new under the sun.

"Overrated" is certainly subjective, but for me, Clannad, Shingeki no Kyojin, Tokyo Ghoul, Gantz (honestly hated this one for some reason), Higurashi...

Gantz was awesome for it's time but if today we go back and re-watch it obviously we'll easily spot it's flaws and the rating will drop but still is not praised enough to be considered overrated.

Gantz is mindnumbingly bad! all that boring, unstylish, gratuitous violence, on top of being completely tasteless and mildly sexist.

psycho-pass has no style either. steins;gate is cheap.

ghost in the shell is interesting in some parts but overall really lacks excitement.

monster tops them all though. flat, predictable story with gaping plot holes that span over 50? episodes that could've easily been shortened to 3 or 4.

Bakemonogatari relies on its "artsy" action scenes. The rest is so dull.

I think Bakemonogatari appeals to a lot of fans based on its banter and witty dialogue. It didn't really "click" with me.
