What's your favorite? Your least favorite? Do you think some are under-recognized? Why?

Lets start atleast something shall we.:P

I personally am a big fan of White Fox and their works in general AGK not withstanding.Specially because, they are one of the very few studios out there who have pulled off an adaptation that originated from a VN with splendid colors. I also do like their attention to details and the sort of artwork we got to see in Katanagatari.Jormungand is another example of it.I also liked how well they adapted Devil is a part Timer from the LN.Even from what I have heard,AGK was pretty close to the source material till the last few episodes when...stuff happened.

Minor slip-ups such as these aside, they have done well in general.

I don't think I've watched more than 5 shows (completed, I've watched many more that I've put on hold or dropped) from any individual studio, so take my judgings with a grain of salt. I'm just gonna name a few that I have strong opinions on.

DEEN: Seemed to have a good footing back in the late 80's and the 90's, but now they produce very lackluster stuff, especially in regards to animation.

Bones: Overall very good studio here. Quite a few misses in recent years, but nothing really horrible to break an otherwise good track record. Their character designs always took a bit of getting used to for me way back when, but I can appreciate their designs and art as a whole, which is almost always above average even if everything else falls flat (I'm looking at you, Captain Earth).

Madhouse: With such a big library they obviously have some stinkers (once again, mainly in recent years), but a lot of the grittier stories that many people, myself included, love come from this studio.

Production I.G.: Always has good production quality. Their main focus is sci-fi, with a secondary focus on shoujo romance, supernatural, and sports genres, which always seemed like a strange mix to me. However, they have some real gems from all of these genres in my opinion.

My least favourite would probably be XEBEC. They barely have any works that you could say are remarkable in the slightest. The only one I enjoy is Busou Renkin, and even that has a hard time breaking through it's generic shounen trappings. I always try to avoid shows done by them.

My favourite would probably be Manglobe. Not gonna give a reason for this just because I can't really think of solid ones, but I just like them a lot.

I think this is a tricky question cause there are 2 sides to this argument, Quality and Consistency. If you look at the studios with quality such as Kyoani, ufotable, Shaft, P.A Works, etc, you have to say their consistency isn't too great when you compare to the likes of A-1, Pierrot, Toei, etc, who have one or more shows airing every season, however if i was to choose who best balances the act then i may have to slightly lean on shaft, though i do admit theirs is more about quality but they do it fairly frequently enough to be considered the best out there.

I like a lot of studios.

JC has made a lot of my favourite romance series and I think they excel in the romcom department. They've shown their aesthetics in Love Stage which is the prettiest BL anime existing.

A1 males a lot of quality shows and is strongest with SOL like Space Brothers and Gin no Saji. They have proven that they can have great animation and art with Shigatsu.

Kyoani is a hit or miss for me, but when they hit, they hit hard. My favourite franchise or series is obviously, Free!. With beautiful animation art, voice acting, sound, writing AND merchindaise, they've really hit every spot.

Production IG, I mainly like them for their aesthetics and ability. They've made some of my favourite sports anime and made them beautiful. Their animation quality is really smooth and futuristic. I like their action shows like Eden of the East and Psycho Pass.

PA Works, I've been liking more of their newer works like Nagi no Asukara and even Charlotte. They have beautiful scenery and pretty character designs. For nagiasu, I really liked the moving plot.

Ah and last but not least, Madhouse. They are second to Kyoani and IG when it comes to aesthetics. But they're very accurate to their source adaptations like HxH and Chihayafuru. They do a lot of genres really well ranging from the dark stuff like Death Parade to the lighter stuff like Summer Wars. They're just well rounded in general.

I also don't have a problem with DEEN. They have proven that they have the skills with their recent work, Hybrid Child. Beautiful art and animation with a nice OST.

I do not like Ufotable and SHAFT, mainly because there is no anime I like that they've made so far.

Hmm except the quality in Mekakucity Actors was almost nonexistent :P Haven't really watched much of their stuff, but I do know that Monogatari series look really nice.

Favorites

Production IG: This is definitely my favorite anime production studio, it's the one that made me pay attention to animation studios in general. Although there are hiccups in quality due to time constraints like any other studios have trouble with, they always deliver with fluid action scenes. I also really like how the color palettes are usually slightly more pale and less bright when it comes to any of their anime (well it may just be my eyes). They seem to be really good with 3DCGI too, as shown in GITS 2: Innocence and the movie Oblivion Island, which in my eyes, is comparable to Disney Pixar. In addition, I can always count on them for adaptations, they've never disappointed me once. They've also made some of my favorite anime originals, Kaleido Star, Higashi no Eden, Psycho Pass, and Guilty Crown. Overall, they just seem to excel in every way.

PA Works: My go-to studio for the slice of life genre. They have really beautiful scenery and their character designs are the type of cute that I don't find overbearing. It's very easy to know what their style is. They tend to specialize in originals, which is something I like to see no one can spoil you that way. I mean it could be a complete miss like Glasslip, but others like Tari Tari, Nagi no Asukara, and Shirobako were a joy to watch. I think they also tie off adaptation endings pretty well in that they don't make their own ending but still finishes the story in a satisfactory manner, as seen with Uchouten Kazoku or Red Data Girl.

Bones: Another studio that delivers in quality. They're also usually pretty good with adaptations, although my favorite anime from them was animated back in 2003. I appreciate the experimental show Space Dandy though, it shows that they can do diverse genres and animation styles.

Madhouse: Same as above, quality animation but according to the series I've seem from them (mostly in the last 3 years), they pretty much only specialize in adaptations with a few anime originals. Not that it's a bad thing, that just means they're good at what they do. But because of this, I have less praise for them than I do with other studios

DEEN: I think they have the ability to animate well, but it's just that the series they make in the recent years could be more of a miss rather than a hit. If it doesn't involve much action, their anime could be very nice to look at (Hakkenden, Hakuoki, Meganebu!, Rozen Maiden). They probably just have to wait for a good manga (or LN) to come along for them to animate, or get a really good original idea to get better reception.

MAPPA: Recently getting well-known for their quality. Very good animation and I like most of their character designs, especially the ones that lean towards being realistic, such as Zankyou no Terror and Shingeki no Bahamut. I enjoy their historical fantasies.

Brains Base: Special mention for their adaptations. They don't really have a style of their own though.

JC Staff: Also special mention since they excel at romcom and slice of life. Like DEEN, good quality when it doesn't come to a lot of movements.

Least Favorites

I don't really like Trigger that much, although I've only see a few of their stuffs. Same with SHAFT. ufotable is alright because flashy animation and high budgets from what I've seem (not much).

I have a hate and love relationship with A-1. I agree with mayuka's comment mostly. I just dislike them for what they did with Ao no Exorcist and Magi. Not just due to the way those two series ended, but the terrible quality throughout the series (mainly Magi). Shinsekai Yori also could've looked much better. I believe they make better slice of anime (adaptations or originals). It's hard to expect high quality from them though, it highly depends from series to series.

KyoAni has beautiful animation and style, but almost nothing I like from them, save for Hyouka and Haruhi. I despise most of their character designs because of the fetus hands and feet. I also don't like the way they exaggerate movements to make the characters look cute. I don't like them because imo, they could do so much more with their quality animation.

------------------------------------------

As for under-recognized, I don't think any of the ones I mentioned are. And if there are any, I guess it's because I haven't seem many if at all any anime from a studio. Maybe CoMix Wave Films, although they exclusively do movies/CMs/OVAs with either Shinkai Makoto or Yamamoto Soubi. But no one can deny the beauty in Shinkai's films, or Yamamoto's unique style.

Studio Colorido for the same reason as above, they make shorts so they're not well known. They have a refreshing style though. Their stuffs are usually quite relaxing or fun to watch

Toei and Pierrot too. They have the ability to animate well but their anime are usually not that pretty to look at, probably due to low budget since they tend to make long running shows. Toei spent an incredible amount of money making Captain Harlock (movie), and it looked really good.
