Hmm except the quality in Mekakucity Actors was almost nonexistent :P Haven't really watched much of their stuff, but I do know that Monogatari series look really nice.

Production IG: This is definitely my favorite anime production studio, it's the one that made me pay attention to animation studios in general. Although there are hiccups in quality due to time constraints like any other studios have trouble with, they always deliver with fluid action scenes. I also really like how the color palettes are usually slightly more pale and less bright when it comes to any of their anime (well it may just be my eyes). They seem to be really good with 3DCGI too, as shown in GITS 2: Innocence and the movie Oblivion Island, which in my eyes, is comparable to Disney Pixar. In addition, I can always count on them for adaptations, they've never disappointed me once. They've also made some of my favorite anime originals, Kaleido Star, Higashi no Eden, Psycho Pass, and Guilty Crown. Overall, they just seem to excel in every way.
PA Works: My go-to studio for the slice of life genre. They have really beautiful scenery and their character designs are the type of cute that I don't find overbearing. It's very easy to know what their style is. They tend to specialize in originals, which is something I like to see no one can spoil you that way. I mean it could be a complete miss like Glasslip, but others like Tari Tari, Nagi no Asukara, and Shirobako were a joy to watch. I think they also tie off adaptation endings pretty well in that they don't make their own ending but still finishes the story in a satisfactory manner, as seen with Uchouten Kazoku or Red Data Girl.
Bones: Another studio that delivers in quality. They're also usually pretty good with adaptations, although my favorite anime from them was animated back in 2003. I appreciate the experimental show Space Dandy though, it shows that they can do diverse genres and animation styles.
Madhouse: Same as above, quality animation but according to the series I've seem from them (mostly in the last 3 years), they pretty much only specialize in adaptations with a few anime originals. Not that it's a bad thing, that just means they're good at what they do. But because of this, I have less praise for them than I do with other studios
DEEN: I think they have the ability to animate well, but it's just that the series they make in the recent years could be more of a miss rather than a hit. If it doesn't involve much action, their anime could be very nice to look at (Hakkenden, Hakuoki, Meganebu!, Rozen Maiden). They probably just have to wait for a good manga (or LN) to come along for them to animate, or get a really good original idea to get better reception.
MAPPA: Recently getting well-known for their quality. Very good animation and I like most of their character designs, especially the ones that lean towards being realistic, such as Zankyou no Terror and Shingeki no Bahamut. I enjoy their historical fantasies.
Brains Base: Special mention for their adaptations. They don't really have a style of their own though.
JC Staff: Also special mention since they excel at romcom and slice of life. Like DEEN, good quality when it doesn't come to a lot of movements.

I don't really like Trigger that much, although I've only see a few of their stuffs. Same with SHAFT. ufotable is alright because flashy animation and high budgets from what I've seem (not much).
I have a hate and love relationship with A-1. I agree with mayuka's comment mostly. I just dislike them for what they did with Ao no Exorcist and Magi. Not just due to the way those two series ended, but the terrible quality throughout the series (mainly Magi). Shinsekai Yori also could've looked much better. I believe they make better slice of anime (adaptations or originals). It's hard to expect high quality from them though, it highly depends from series to series.
KyoAni has beautiful animation and style, but almost nothing I like from them, save for Hyouka and Haruhi. I despise most of their character designs because of the fetus hands and feet. I also don't like the way they exaggerate movements to make the characters look cute. I don't like them because imo, they could do so much more with their quality animation.

As for under-recognized, I don't think any of the ones I mentioned are. And if there are any, I guess it's because I haven't seem many if at all any anime from a studio. Maybe CoMix Wave Films, although they exclusively do movies/CMs/OVAs with either Shinkai Makoto or Yamamoto Soubi. But no one can deny the beauty in Shinkai's films, or Yamamoto's unique style.
Studio Colorido for the same reason as above, they make shorts so they're not well known. They have a refreshing style though. Their stuffs are usually quite relaxing or fun to watch
Toei and Pierrot too. They have the ability to animate well but their anime are usually not that pretty to look at, probably due to low budget since they tend to make long running shows. Toei spent an incredible amount of money making Captain Harlock (movie), and it looked really good. |
