What were your initial impressions of the anime community, and how did that impression change over time? There had to be some reason you chose to continue to take part in it, right? (...Right?)

MAL was my first encounter with the anime community. I was fairly new to anime at the time, and, to be honest I thought the fandom was just filled with "haters". Going to subforums of shows like Clannad and seeing heavy criticism was something I really couldn't stand, which partly lead me to not participate much at first. (I was much younger at the time.)

Later on, I realized that a lot of criticisms weren't necessarily of ill intent, and, combined with my broadening taste, I figured it was worth participating in discussion. Eventually I swung into a hyper-argumentative period (very much becoming the thing I previously couldn't stand) with a relative disdain toward newbies- something I'm a bit ashamed of in hindsight. (Misery enjoys company, perhaps? But then, why would one choose to participate in such a community anyway?)

In any case, the conclusion I've come to is that the anime community is a bit overly hostile, but otherwise seems pretty decent. There is a lot of discussion material, and you can find people who are fun to discuss with, and you can promote interesting discussion if you put a bit of thought into it.

Online anime fans... I pretty much agree with you on that, TripleSRank, about people being overly hostile or judgmental. The main reason I like to post is that I have a lot of knowledge about older anime, a lot of which was handed down to me by the people who formed my initial impressions of the community, so I like to give back. I don't know when everyone became obsessed with good taste, or bashing on shounen, moe, shoujo, mecha, what have you, but it really bums me out.

That's actually why I and a lot of other people like your posts so much. They're always so interesting (including this one!).

I think some of the problems mentioned might be inherent to the internet rather than the anime fandom specifically, even though the particulars are specific.

What was the first anime you watched, btw? What hooked you?
