So I wanted to start this week's discussion with asking if anybody watches asian dramas. I started watching those when I found out some of my favorite shoujo manga were adapted into live action dramas and because I am such a hardcore fan girl, I had to watch them. Have you guys seen any adaptations? Or good ones in general?

At first it was kind of weird seeing the scenes I recently read being translated into a drama but I quickly began to love their wacky humor. One thing I've noticed that they have in common is how silly they can be. Something else that is delightful is how many remakes there are! I enjoyed watching different versions --especially if I loved the manga. From korean adaptations to japanese to even taiwanese. There are some things I've noticed that differentiated one from the other (especially the budget omg).

I haven't watched enough dramas to presume I have some insight in all of them (ask Candy for that) but discussing and comparing them turned out to be quite interesting when I was talking to my friends. They noticed how japanese dramas tended to deal with more mature and darker subjects while korean dramas were more idealistic and far from reality (aka fairy tale-esque). There are also the differences in the kissing scenes. Candy pointed out that in korean dramas they did a 360 view and barely touched lips while the japanese ones were... steamy ;)

Anyways, just wanted to write up some thoughts on it. If you have any thoughts you will like to share, please post a response :) Or if you want to talk about the latest ones you've watched or your faves.

A few of my faves, if anybody is interested in starting a drama...

1. Nodame Cantabile

This one I began because I was smitten with the anime. This drama came out before the anime so it's the manga adaptation and I really liked it. the chemistry between the actors is really heart warming and the music was exceptional. If you like comedy and classical music, this is for you.

2. Hana Yori Dango

Another manga/anime adaptation. This one was exceptional. I suggest just watching this for the adorable bishie that is Domyougi. Just ... *faint* Anyways, yeah great story, great characters and great chemistry. I really enjoyed it. I felt it deviated a little too much from it's source but it's like 30 volumes so it's forgivable. I suggest this if you love romance, great drama and some mature themes.

3. Koizora

This was hard looking up the pictures without getting sad. I loved this drama. Had great romance and so much drama. I didn't feel like the drama was heavy handed but was written so well. It's only like 5 episodes, though ;___; And yes, I cried. Not ashamed to admit it. Don't worry, the male lead's hair... you get used to it. It felt really weird how dry and bleached it was but just try to ignore it :p Highly recommend if you love romance and want to have a good cry.

4. Tatta Hitotsu no Koi

Very difficult to look up these pictures without hyperventilating. Male lead is one of my fave actors, I try to watch every drama he's been. This one being my favorite. I love the romance and the story. Poor guy meets a rich ojousama. Of course there's drama. Loved every second of it. Highly recommend.

I don't know if they're entry level dramas but those were just a few of my favorites. Just wanted to share what I've been obsessed with this past month. We will be writing up reviews on dramas and asian movies coming soon. Maybe. If you're nice. I't not like I'm excited to show off our cupcake rating system Our blog will be up in September *crosses fingers*

K I didn't actually read like anything Aveyls typed but something about entry levels sooooo I'm going to be best girl and give you guys a fabu lil guide for Asian dramas! WOOT!

I used to watch a crap ton a couple of yrs ago, jap, Korean, Chinese, all the goods, and here is what I can tell you.

Watch Korean for high production value and some good plot. Romances and suspense dramas tend to get stale really quick because kdramas follow the same formula without adding anything fresh. They try to go dark....and fail a lot of the time. It's not believable. Also, them ho's cannot kiss. They literally have the worst kisses that I have ever seen in any drama like ever! They legit peck on the lips, barely touching, and the camera spins....for like 5 mins straight. Its ridiculous. Everyone in the show will probably have cancer, amnesia, been hit by a car, had a parent die from one of the former, or literally all of them (not even kidding, this one drama had literally all of that....in 3 eps LOL)

Watch Taiwanese/Chinese is you don't mind extremely low production value (rain comes from a sprinkler) but intriguing plot and believable romances. Like these people actually act like they're into each other, they don't pull all the baby romance shit, and we get further in the story waaaay quicker. Tends to be shorter then Korean dramas. They do comedy really well, but I enjoy their more serious types as well.

Watch Japanese for some mid tier production quality, some believable romance, some out of control plot, and fabulous ass adaptions. Generally this is the middle ground of the three, but I stay away from simply because some adaptions go sooooooooooo freaking bad it's not even funny. They will make you feel feels, like ALLLLL types of feels. The shortest of all 3, around 12-15 eps (THANK GOD).

NOOOOOOOOW For my Favs

Dear God, this show. I was madly in love when I watched it and I still adore it. It's dramatic as F. Like ridiculously so. It has the cliches and everything, but F that, it's done sooooo well. I shipped this couple so haaaard and the child is cute as F. Like it's not even funny how many feels I got watching this show. Taiwanese and they get dirty, ooohhh gurl!

The Taiwanese 2008 version, not the new Korean one coming out (ruining errrthang). This show was freaking hilarious, like omg could not stop laughing. The romance is also really cute. Not gonna lie though, it was one of my first dramas so I may hate it now LOL. Still necessary in my life for the lols though. Dramatic, but not overbearing.

Yup, an actual Korean one made it to my list, and surprisingly enough its a suspense drama! This is one of them that got me so deep into the genre. Holy hell there was so much backstabbing and betrayal in this one, I can't even. Literally was living for that ending, it's no joke, they go hard! This one has romance but I totally forgot about it because I was all up in that brother drama. Some of the drama is like totally unnecessary though (this is why I said Korean dramas miss this mark a lot) . They add waaaaay too much for the sake of simply being dramatic. Anyway, amazing show.

Any drama is an entry level drama honestly, unless it's like 50 eps long. Walk the fuck away right god damn now, you are not ready!!! All the eps are an hr + long so get your ass comfortable, cause you're gonna be there a while xD

Kisses for the bitches <3

I've watched a lot of j-drama over the years, some manga adaptations but most not. The more recent adaptations that I've seen are: Hana Yori Dango (I still ship Tsukushi x Rui), Hanazakari no Kimitachi e (fun and silly comedy), and Kyou wa Kaisha Yasumimasu (I liked this drama even though it didn't quite follow the manga story line). Nodame Cantabile sounds interesting, so I'll probably try to watch it soon. :) The main male lead is the secondary male lead in Kyou wa Kaisha Yasumimasu.

I haven't watched any Korean dramas, so I can't compare the differences between them and Japanese dramas, but I always thought that the kissing scenes in j-dramas look awkward, lol. Maybe I'm watching the wrong dramas. ;)

Korean ones are really dragged out for no reason. It's frustrating. But sometimes it's worth it because the quality is so good. The only Taiwanese one I saw was the Skip Beat adaptation and it looked slightly higher budget than the norm, I think. It was really good.

You seem to have a preference to Taiwanese, Candy.

@dnsj Hey :) YES Tsukushi x Rui <3 I shipped it the entire manga but Domyouji won me over (especially in the jdrama--that actor is so cute). You should give K-dramas a try. That budget is so high so it's great to look at. If you don't mind the ridiculous amount of product placement (Please, Samsung. Calm down). The kisses seem cute in all the asian dramas. Although it's nice to see steamy ones, I don't really mind as long as there's an actual kiss or confession. Then all that suffering would be for nothing if it didn't have it ;_;

Yea, I'm way more into Taiwanese/Chinese dramas then other types. It sucks that the production values is so low but I appreciate them not extending my suffering by dragging out unnecessary things. Also I find them funnier then other types because they don't have so many restrictions on them. Korean Dramas may be getting better tho, idk.

For a random throw out. If you want a ridiculously dramatic drama with and end your soul can never be ready for, go watch 49 Days.
