Greetings.

I have a maybe silly question. Does this show focus on the music or is it just an excuse to get some plot going? I know a couple on so-called music shows (K-ON being the main example) where the music is just an excuse to get people interact with each other and after that nobody cares and i sorta hope this is not 1 of them.

Yes it does. The show is mainly about the cast's struggles to get into the band and trying to get to the nationals. There is some tidbit of romance and some personal quarrels here and there but not that much.

Music is relevant to most characters' motivations and development. The band's performances are also what drives the plot, and while the show doesn't really get too deep into the technical aspects of music, it's always accurate when portraying stuff like mistakes by one of the band's members (or so I've been told from people who are more knowledgeable than me).

I wouldn't say "focus on the music", but more "focus on the band". If you have any familiarity with middle school, high school, or collegiate band programs (concert or marching), you'll see a lot of very familiar situations throughout. The musical performances, when directly relevant (a character is rushing, is slightly hesitant, 2 plays competing for a solo, etc) is subtle, yet accurate. Music itself is used as a *theme* in only a handful of episodes, but there's a quite powerful duet that takes place at one point that shows the importance of it to the characters.

At first, I thought it was simply the background for a standard slice of life anime, but by a few episodes in you see that band is integral to the story. I had an event at my house this past July with 15-20 people from marching bands at colleges all over the western US and they were transfixed, watching it to the end.

If you haven't already, give it a shot.
