[spoiler]
[3:14:04 PM] Avelys: So starting off, I really enjoyed reading this manga. I think it handled the supernatural elements well where it didn't feel too forced or dumb. I especially liked how it didn't take itself too seriously with and focused on the themes of the work. What did you guys think?
[3:15:13 PM] Ryan: yeah I love this manga. liked how the primary focus was on the supernatural than on the romance which was refreshing from the other shoujo manga i've read. really like the characters too, they warmed up to me on my 2nd reread.
[3:15:58 PM] Avelys: It was really cool seeing the kids use logic to find their answer. I was really impressed. It was fun and reminded me a little of Detective Conan (chuckle)
[3:16:00 PM | Edited 3:16:07 PM] Jeni: I wasn't sure what to expect at first and I really liked the story line with the young kids.
[3:16:33 PM] Jasmine: This manga was really unique from the rest of the Ai works I've read and just even more within the shoujo realm. The focus or themes are really nicely studded through the supernatural rather than the romance, which brings everything together wonderfully.
[3:16:33 PM] Avelys: Yeah, I feel like the kids were really the heart of the story. Which was interesting. That it was them instead of the main girl.
[3:16:54 PM] Avelys: Yeah, I love Ai's work. Totally different from her other works (nod)
[3:17:10 PM] Avelys: It felt fresh and new, like she was experimenting.
[3:17:47 PM] Jasmine: I enjoyed seeing the exploration of Mizuki through everyone else (which is why I was able to excuse a lot static-ness of some characters).
[3:18:44 PM] Avelys: She managed to convey certain emotions (especially the complicated ones) really well. I was really impressed when the little girl... the short haired one, when she realized that her best friend liked a guy, it wasn't some over blown drama. That's what I love about Ai Yazawa's work is that the reactions feel natural. Not dumb and drawn out.
[3:19:00 PM] Ryan: defintely
[3:19:26 PM] Jeni: yeah, that was nice
[3:19:37 PM] Ryan: when i first read it, i figured because the main cast were a bunch of 5th graders, i thought they were gonna be annoying lilttle shits but i really liked them
[3:19:43 PM] Avelys: LOL
[3:19:46 PM] Jeni: heh
[3:19:51 PM] Ryan: no joke
[3:19:58 PM] Avelys: Yeah the kids didn't feel like little kids.
[3:20:12 PM] Ryan: smartest 5th graders
[3:20:25 PM] Ryan: also I really love the ending with the time capsule
[3:21:07 PM] Avelys: But they weren't adults either. Like they maintained their child like innocence, she was able to preserve their youth but not make them the same as other children are portrayed. Who are silly and don't know anything more often than not. At least in manga, from the ones I've read.
[3:21:40 PM] Avelys: Yeah, I loved the time capsule idea. I wanted to see them in the future and imagined what they would look like (chuckle)
[3:22:13 PM] Avelys: What did you guys think of the many twists in the story?
[3:22:51 PM] Ryan: unexpected
[3:23:09 PM] Ryan: but it didnt feel forced or anything like that
[3:23:32 PM] Avelys: Like the revelation that she was possessed by a ghost?
[3:23:41 PM] Avelys: I was like OMG PLS NOT INCEPTION
[3:23:42 PM] Avelys: x)
[3:24:08 PM] Ryan: Yeah the S.K. thing
[3:24:43 PM] Ryan: that was handled really well and it made sense given the time that shes been in the house
[3:25:07 PM] Avelys: That shot where she's looking in the mirror and has black hair. BAM.
[3:25:14 PM] Avelys: OOOO SHIT (rofl)
[3:25:17 PM] Jeni: yeah
[3:25:34 PM] Ryan: i remember reading it and i was so confused trying to match up the timeline in order and thats when i figured something is up with eve
[3:25:50 PM] Avelys: Exactly
[3:26:04 PM] Avelys: I'm glad it all kind of made sense in the end. It's really sad about Adam :c
[3:26:18 PM] Jeni: so maybe I read it too fast, but why did she run away from her family in the first place? because she broke up with her boyfriend for cheating on her and was depressed?
[3:26:26 PM] Avelys: I didn't expect him to be dead, tbh.
[3:26:29 PM] Jeni: yeah, poor Adam
[3:26:37 PM] Avelys: Yeah, Jeni
[3:26:49 PM] Avelys: Well she was roaming the streets when she met ghost Adam
[3:27:03 PM] Jeni: that's pretty dramatic to run away over a cheating boyfriend
[3:27:08 PM] Ryan: yeah i didnt expect it either
[3:27:18 PM] Avelys: I think there were other issues too like her not fitting into her new family
[3:27:26 PM] Avelys: And having a rocky relationship with her father
[3:27:29 PM] Jeni: ah, that's true
[3:27:40 PM] Ryan: she was captivated by adam
[3:28:27 PM] Avelys: I don't think she necessarily ran away from home, Jeni. If I remember correctly, she just needed time to herself. Then when Adam told her to come with her, that's when she came back home... effectively running away.
[3:28:38 PM] Avelys: I don't think she had a luggage last time (think)
[3:28:49 PM] Ryan: nope she didnt
[3:29:21 PM] Jeni: oh, okay
[3:29:36 PM] Jeni: that makes sense
[3:29:49 PM] Avelys: It kind of feels like a common theme in Ai-sensei's other works, running away from home. That happened in Paradise Kiss, Nana, and I think Tenshi nanka Janai (I think is the title).
[3:29:50 PM] Ryan: remember she met adam in the park
[3:29:56 PM] Avelys: yeah
[3:30:28 PM] Avelys: Did they agree that she was the re-incarnation or something? Of his last gf?
[3:30:39 PM] Avelys: I think they explained it with her clothes and that ring, possessing her
[3:30:55 PM] Ryan: sae explained based on her age and whatnot
[3:31:56 PM] Avelys: Well, they had different theories. I liked that they didn't make a forced effort to explain it but just brought up different theories. One of the kids said that when it comes to these supernatural matters, it's really hard to pin point the exact reason. Which I feel made it less contrived
[3:32:23 PM] Ryan: thats true
[3:33:43 PM] Ryan: theres a live action movie of last quarter if you guys idnt know
[3:33:55 PM] Avelys: Oh wow, I didn't know.
[3:34:08 PM] Ryan: made back in 2004
[3:34:10 PM] Avelys: Most of her works get adaptations
[3:34:19 PM] Jeni: oh, I didn't know that either
[3:34:21 PM] Avelys: Paradise Kiss (bad), Nana (haven't seen)
[3:34:22 PM] Ryan: i never saw it but based on the length of this manga,i could see it being a film
[3:34:23 PM] Avelys: so that's cool.
[3:34:30 PM] Avelys: Yeah, it would work as a film.
[3:34:47 PM] Ryan: yeah this is the first work I've read from her and im very impressed gonna have to check out her other works
[3:35:06 PM] Avelys: I love her <3
[3:35:09 PM] Avelys: You might like Nana
[3:35:16 PM] Avelys: Has really great character development
[3:35:29 PM] Avelys: I haven't read the manga yet but I have watched the anime.
[3:35:34 PM] Ryan: i saw paradise kiss vol 1 at my barnes and noble few months ago
[3:35:39 PM] Jeni: I've heard of Nana but haven't read it yet.
[3:35:54 PM] Ryan: i was planning on starting nana but i heard its not finished so idk if i shuld
[3:36:09 PM] Jeni: oh, it's not?
[3:36:12 PM] Ryan: the music is nana is really good though
[3:36:14 PM] Ryan: nope
[3:36:22 PM] Avelys: YES
[3:36:24 PM] Avelys: the music is so good
[3:36:26 PM] Ryan: the mangaka got sick or something a few years back
[3:36:32 PM] Avelys: Here's the other work from Yawaza
[3:36:32 PM] Avelys: http://myanimelist.net/manga/1496/Tenshi_Nanka_ja_Nai
[3:36:35 PM] Ryan: so she didnt work on any new material
[3:36:42 PM] Avelys: It's referenced a lot in shoujo manga
[3:37:12 PM] Avelys: It feels like one of those classic shoujos
[3:37:31 PM] Avelys: Her spin on usual shoujo but adding realistic reactions and characters
[3:37:32 PM] Avelys: :]
[3:37:41 PM] Avelys: It was a weekly back in the summer, and Brandi and I loved it.
[3:37:48 PM] Ryan: seems nana and paradise kiss are her most popular works
[3:38:17 PM] Avelys: Yeah they are more popular. I would read this just because of the impact it had on the shoujo community
[3:38:27 PM] Ryan: damn
[3:38:34 PM] Avelys: She's really amazing
[3:38:41 PM | Edited 3:38:47 PM] Avelys: I hope she comes back to drawing ;-;
[3:39:06 PM] Ryan: she was sick back in 2009 thats 6 years now
[3:39:13 PM] Jeni: I'll put them on my to-read list.
[3:39:22 PM] Jeni: wow, that's a long time
[3:39:30 PM] Ryan: yup
[3:39:39 PM] Ryan: i dont recall what sickness she had
[3:39:48 PM] Avelys: Yep. We're all waiting for her to come back since one of her most popular works (Nana) has been on hiatus and there's a huge cliffhanger apparently.
[3:39:59 PM] Ryan: yeah i heard about that
[3:40:02 PM] Avelys: That's the only reason I haven't read the manga.
[3:40:08 PM] Ryan: same
[3:40:15 PM] Avelys: I don't want to suffer </3
[3:40:32 PM] Avelys: But the anime only adapted like 40 chapters out of 80
[3:40:36 PM] Avelys: so I'll have to suck it up
[3:41:16 PM] Ryan: heard theres a timeskip towards the end of the anime and it ends abruptly
[3:41:30 PM] Avelys: Yep
[3:41:36 PM] Avelys: It's pretty crap.
[3:41:37 PM] Ryan: thats unfortunate
[3:41:45 PM] Avelys: But I don't blame them (rofl)
[3:42:58 PM] Ryan: i think we've discussed everything
[3:43:12 PM] Avelys: What did you think of her art?
[3:43:21 PM] Ryan: oh the art
[3:43:25 PM] Avelys: I feel like she has a really memorable style
[3:43:36 PM] Ryan: the art didnt kill my eyes like the previous manga we read
[3:43:40 PM] Avelys: LOOOOOOOOOOOL
[3:43:42 PM] Ryan: i liked it
[3:43:56 PM] Jeni: lol
[3:44:04 PM] Ryan: like the facial expressions the characters have in the manga look very detailed
[3:44:37 PM] Avelys: She also puts a lot of focus in the clothing of her characters, that kind of speak for themselves. Like the clothes are characters herself. But there's more focus with that in her other works.
[3:44:40 PM] Jeni: I liked the way the young kids were drawn
[3:44:49 PM] Avelys: Yeah, I loved the facial expressions, good call.
[3:44:50 PM] Sloth™: [3:35:44 PM] drop tha bassline: i was planning on starting nana but i heard its not finished so idk if i shuld
[3:35:59 PM] dnjs99: oh, it's not?
perma hiatus cause the mangaka got sick and moved on from the story or something idk D: in 2009 it went on hiatus
[3:45:06 PM] Sloth™: the anime is awesome though totally worth the watch
[3:45:12 PM] Avelys: I agree
[3:45:16 PM] Avelys: Just for dat music doe :]
[3:45:26 PM] Ryan: i seen alot of people praise paradise kiss for the character designs
[3:45:39 PM] Avelys: and the outfits !!
[3:45:44 PM] Ryan: yeah
[3:46:05 PM] Sloth™: lolz i just started idolmaster :d
[3:46:12 PM] Avelys: I believe Yawaza went to school for fashion design but dropped out for some reason. So it's nice how she implements what she loves and what she learned into her manga.
[3:46:12 PM] Ryan: prodcuer best girl
[3:46:21 PM] Ryan: oh interesting
[3:46:54 PM] Avelys: Yeah which explains the focus on clothing since other shoujo kind of just focus on highschool clothing and not bringing their characters any unique outfits
[3:47:06 PM] Avelys: Although it looks like some manga have been shifting from that
[3:47:10 PM] Ryan: pretty unique aspect
[3:47:17 PM] Avelys: Like Hirunaka na Ryuusei and other ones coming out, actually have pretty cute outfits.
[3:47:55 PM] Avelys: Okay well thanks for joining the discussion, guys.
