Recently watched Pink, which I read the one-shot for but I never read the Kennosuke-sama one-shot, and I ended up enjoying this a lot more. I wonder if that's because I was going in blind, or if perhaps they left Kennosuke-sama untouched. Pink had a lot of changes from the original one-shot, some which were necessary for the runtime, but I largely felt the changes were for the worst, with a few exceptions. I wonder if this is a more direct adaption, and that's why I preferred it.
Regardless, I had a lot of fun with this. My favourite jokes were either Kennosuke hitting the bully before he could pull of the prank, cut to him being punished in the hallway or Shinobimaru missing the ants, and getting these anthroponomic ant couple checking in on each-other. Such a weird little side gag unrelated to anything that I thought was pretty amusing. Pretty amusing is how I'd classify this whole OVA. The dynamic between Kennosuke & Shinobimaru during the date prep is pretty cute & charming. And the ending with Kennosuke missing the date after all that because of Shinobimaru very first stupid suggestion, resulting in Oten calling him terrible anyway, is a great ending punchline. Bit obvious I guess, but still funny nevertheless.
Also design-wise could definitely feel the Dragon Ball. As Oten-dono is straight up just Chi-chi, and Shinobimaru is like Oolong mixed with Shu. I thought the short looked pretty solid, and the music, much like it was with Pink, was surprisingly great. I will say the track during Kennosuke's fight didn't feel fitting to me. But that's really the only real negative I have for this OVA.
I've recently been going through several of the Toriyama works that I haven't seen that I could complete quickly. So like all the Dragon Ball Movies, and the aforementioned Pink, and I've been doing this in tribute to Toriyama but I haven't been scoring any of those things particularly high, so I started to feel bad. Like nothing scored higher than a 6, and I don't consider 6 a bad score but I'm so glad that I enjoyed Kennosuke-sama enough to give it a 7/10. Not an amazing score, but this is was a solid, fun little OVA that I definitely enjoyed my time with. |
